After a long and illustrious career as one of America’s best goalkeepers, Kasey Keller has one more award to walk off into the sunset with.
The 41-year-old Seattle Sounder was announced as MLS Goalkeeper of the Year on Tuesday in a move widely expected after he was named to the MLS Best XI last week. Keller, who retired at the end of the season, won top voting in all three voting blocks with the players (17.39), media (26.98) and clubs (29.59) naming him as top choice. The Olympia native played every minute of MLS action with the club, racking up an impressive 76% save percentage and a goals against average hovering just about one.
Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon finished second in the voting (14.91, 26.98, 29.59) followed by FC Dallas’ Kevin Hartman (5.59, 15.87, 10.2). Real Salt Lake’s Nick Rimando (7.45, 14.81, 8.16) and Chivas USA’s Dan Kennedy (5.59, 5.29, 8.16) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
"It was a great year and I'm proud that I was able to perform at the level in my final year that I hoped to achieve," said Keller in a press release. "Anytime you receive an award it's always nice that someone has thought of you in that regard. I have never played the game for the awards but it's nice to be recognized by your peers."
What do you think of Keller's award? Do you think it was well deserved? Will you miss him now that he's retired?
