After 10 years at the helm, Steve Nicol won't be returning to the New England Revolution.
The club and Nicol agreed to a mutual parting of the ways, according to a press release, meaning that the longest-tenured coach with a single team in league history is looking for a new club.
"We had a productive discussion about this past season and the direction the club needs to go in the future," Revolution executive Jonathan Kraft said in a release. "We all agreed a change of direction was needed to reverse the trend of the past couple of years. Stevie was a successful head coach and a tremendous ambassador for the Revolution for the past decade and set a high standard for success."
Nicol led the Revolution to four MLS Cup championship game appearances and made the playoffs in each of his first eight seasons in charge. New England missed the postseason in each of the last two seasons, though, and tied expansion Vancouver for the fewest points in the league (28) in 2011.
