Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon has been one of the keys to the second-year club's considerable improvement in 2011, but he won't be in the nets as the Union begin a crucial stretch
Mondragon will be sidelined for between two to four weeks with a fractured finger suffered during the Union's 2-1 loss to Real Salt Lake on Saturday. Mondragon revealed the injury, and even provided a copy of the x-ray of his broken finger via Twitter.
The Union will now turn to rookie Zak MacMath in goal. The 20-year-old Maryland product made his MLS debut on Saturday, coming on and playing 45 minutes in place of Mondragon. MacMath looked solid in net, but Mondragon's absence could prove costly as the Union attempts to snap out of a six-game winless funk that has dropped the club to third place in the East.
The Union recently brought back reserve goalkeeper Thorne Holder, with the 25-year old expected to be MacMath's back-up while Mondragon recovers.
What do you think of this development? Think MacMath can hold it down until Mondragon returns? Starting to worry about the Union's playoff hopes, or are you confident the team will find its form late in the season?
