The Chicago Fire dominated the visiting Vancouver Whitecaps in every category except the scoreline as the two teams battled to a scoreless draw at Toyota Park.
Chicago began the game with a flurry of chances that went begging. Diego Chaves couldn't get a hold of a low cross and was taken down inside the box but referee Andrew Chapin waved play on. The Fire wasted another golden opportunity just after the half hour mark when Dominic Oduro found himself in a good position after a nifty cutback of Greg Janicki, but his shot sailed over the bar.
Jay Nolly kept the score deadlocked with a good save of Marco Pappa's low shot in the 36th minute and Chavez saw his shot come back off the post in the 44th minute. Chicago ended the first half with 69 percent of possession.
The second half saw far fewer scoring chances as both teams upped the physicality. Four yellow cards were issued but neither team offered much more than a few speculative shots from range. The exception was when Vancouver's Eric Hassli found himself alone in front of goal but he failed to pull the trigger and John Conway smothered the loose ball.
