When the Vancouver Whitecaps needed a moment to rescue a point at home, they turned to their playmaker.
Davide Chiumiento's bending ball from the right carried through the 6-yard box, eluded all San Jose Earthquakes defenders and goalkeeper Jon Busch and found the back of the net in stoppage time to force a 1-1 draw between the two clubs at Empire Field Wednesday night.
San Jose looked to be destined for a much-needed three points on the strength of Chris Wondolowski's first-half goal and some superb late saves by Busch. The draw snapped the Quakes' three-game losing streak but also extended their winless streak to six.
The match also marked Jay DeMerit's return to action from a groin injury, as the U.S. national team centerback entered as a 75th-minute substitute.
Here are highlights of the match.
