Sporting Kansas City signed its second homegrown player on Friday, adding 19-year-old defender Kevin Ellis to the team's roster.
Ellis joins United States youth national team goalkeeper Jon Kempin as the homegrown players in Kansas City. He played at Barton County Community College for the last two seasons, scoring 34 goals in time as both an attacking player and a defender.
Ellis has been training with Sporting KC for the last two weeks after impressing the club during an invitation-only combine. He's been a part of the team's academy for the last four years.
Here are a couple of other items from around the league as the week wraps up:
The Chicago Fire signed 25-year-old Uruguayan forward Diego Chaves from Primera Division club Nacional in his native country.
Chaves and the Fire's other recent signing, Uruguayan forward Gaston Puerari, were teammates at Montevideo Wanderers in 2009, and the hope for the Fire is that they can combine to provide a spark at the top of Carlos de los Cobos' formation.
FC DALLAS ACQUIRES JACOBSON
The Philadelphia Union traded Andrew Jacobson to FC Dallas in exchange for a second-pick in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft.
Jacobson played in 25 games (13 starts) last season for the Union, but with the team acquiring Brian Carroll from Columbus, Jacobson became a tradeable commodity. With Daniel Hernandez recovering from offseason knee surgery, Jacobson could provide decent cover in the center of the pitch for FCD.
DCU RE-ACQUIRES FRED
D.C. United traded its second-round pick in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft to the New England Revolution for the MLS rights to Fred, bringing the midfielder back to D.C. and reuniting him with his younger brother, Junior Carreiro, who is currently out with an ankle injury.
Fred played for D.C. from 2007-2009 before being part of a trade to the Philadelphia Union that allowed D.C. to acquire Troy Perkins. Fred was out of contract at the end of the season and was selected by the Revolution in the Re-Entry Draft. Although he did not sign with the club, the Revolution controlled his rights before shipping him back to D.C.
