Thirteen is the magic number for the Akron Zips. There's no stopping the country's No. 1 team these days, and the Zips continues to roll through the opposition with a 1-0 win against North Illinois over the weekend. Akron outshot Northern Illinois 17-3 but could only muster a game-winner in the 70th minute. It was Akron's 11th clean sheet of the season, and get this statistic: Akron has outscored opponents 36-2 and has outshot them 217-54.
It must be noted that their dominance is in a weaker conference, though they knocked off Virginia Tech last week. Speaking of the ACC, the conference still has three teams in the NSCAA top 10, with Maryland, North Carolina and Wake Forest holding serve. The Terrapins won their fourth in a row on the road, defeating Clemson 1-0. Wake Forest routed NC State 4-1, while the No. 2 Tar Heels were unable to match their counterparts, losing 2-1 against BC in Chapel Hill.
Two teams out west, UCLA and UCSB looked to take advantage of UNC's loss, but only one came away successful. The Bruins had back-to-back shutouts Friday and Sunday, first defeating California 1-0, then following up with a 2-0 win against Stanford. UCSB on the other hand, lost a tight 1-0 decision to Cal State Northridge on Sunday.
The free fall of UMBC continued over the weekend, losing their second in a row and third out of fourth, losing to Longwood 3-2 at home. The nation's leading scorer, Andrew Bulls, tallied his 15th goal of the season, but it wasn't enough for a Terriers win.
What other college match-ups were this weekend? Make it out to any games? Can anyone stop Akron?
