The Los Angeles Galaxy and Houston Dynamo joined the Columbus Crew in the club for MLS playoff qualifiers after posting results in MLS Week 29.
The Galaxy downed the Chicago Fire to secure its first playoff berth in four years, while the Dynamo secured its fourth straight playoff berth with its tie vs. Kansas City on Sunday.
D.C. United need a win at home on Saturday and fell woefully short, dropping a 2-0 loss to Chivas USA that put United's playoff hopes on life support. The Seattle Sounders had more success in its drive for points, becoming the first visiting team to post a win at Crew Stadium this season.
Here's a rundown of the past weekend's MLS action:
FRIDAY
Los Angeles Galaxy 1, Chicago Fire 0. Donovan's goal the only finish in a match that was actually pretty wide-open. Short-handed Fire got no favors from referee, but didn't do enough to capture a point at the Home Depot Center.
SATURDAY
Columbus Crew 0, Seattle Sounders 1. The Sounders are usually the team that dominates play and misses chances, but the Crew took on that role Saturday, with Seattle playing the role of the hard-fighting visitor posting the workman-like victory.
D.C. United 0, Chivas USA 2. Tom Soehn is running out of time after D.C.'s latest disappointing home result. Chivas USA puts together a quality performance to send message that people shouldn't pencil in a Houston-LA Western Conference final just yet.
Colorado Rapids 1, New England Revolution 1. Rapids settle for yet another tie. New England drops points, but considering the injuries and players available against Colorado, a tie on the road was a successful trip for Steve Nicol's men.
San Jose Earthquakes 1, New York Red Bulls 0. Arturo Alvarez's blatant dive, and Ryan Johnson's subsequent penalty, helps keep Earthquakes' faint playoff hopes alive. Red Bulls continue to play better than they did earlier in the season, but offense still came up short in yet another road trip without a victory.
SUNDAY
Houston Dynamo 1, Kansas City Wizards 1. Dynamo clinched a playoff berth, but didn't exactly do it in impressive fashion. Wizards continue to prove difficult to play against, but offense will need to produce more if the Wizards long-shot playoff push is going to have any chance.
