The ACC is once again staking its claim as a dominant conference in men's college soccer. In the latest edition of the NSCAA College Soccer Rankings, the conference now boasts three teams in the top 5. Wake Forest, North Carolina and Maryland all clock in at No. 3, 4 and 5 respectively. Two of the three were in action this week, looking to preserve their stature.
Maryland hosted Seton Hall Tuesday, and had little trouble dealing with the Pirates in a 3-1 win at Ludwig Field. Two goals from Jason Herrick keyed the Terps as they cruised to a win. Wake Forest was also in action, easily winning 3-0 over South Carolina behind two goals from senior Zack Schilawski.
Despite the success of the ACC, no team can keep up with the red hot Akron Zips. Each week they seem to crop up here, and after a 5-1 thumping of Michigan, are worth mentioning again. Darlington Nagbe scored a hat trick, and their 14-0-0 record is the best start in program history. Michigan's goal is only the fifth conceded by the Zips in those 14 games.
No. 9 Harvard left it late against non-conference opponent Providence, but thanks to a late Andre Akpan penalty, came through with a 2-1 win. Harvard's Ivy League counterpart, No. 15 Dartmouth, couldn't best No. 13 South Florida, losing 1-0.
