Upsets continue to be a common occurrence in college soccer this fall. Just when one team makes a jump up the rankings, they'll face a tough or surprising opponent. This time it was No. 9 Duke, who had made strides in the rankings after upsetting then-No. 2 Maryland. Duke received a taste of their own medicine on Tuesday night. Davidson, with an 8-1 record heading into the match, routed the Blue Devils 4-1 — likely knocking Duke down a notch or two.
Elsewhere in Tuesday night ACC action, Maryland bounced back from their defeat at Duke to narrowly defeat Loyola 1-0. No. 2 North Carolina squeaked by Liberty by the same 1-0 margin, while No. 6 Wake Forest easily defeated UNC Greensboro 3-0.
The upset bug hasn't caught on with Akron yet, as the No. 1 school in the nation continued their winning streak, picking up their 10th win in 10 opportunities. Their latest victim was the University of Illinois at Chicago, who put up a good fight — but a 72nd minute winner was enough for a 3-1 win on Wednesday. Akron is one win shy of tying a school record for their best start to a season.
In a battle of two top 25 teams from last night, No. 12 Louisville defeated No. 3 South Florida by a 1-0 scoreline. An 84th minute winner off the boot of Colin Rolfe. Louisville's will prove decisive as the two vie for the Big East title.
