U.S. Olympic team midfielder Dax McCarty has played his last game for FC Dallas.
The Hoops are set to deal McCarty to the San Jose Earthquakes, a source with knowledge of the deal told SBI on Thursday. When completed, the deal would end an uncomfortable situation that saw McCarty and FC Dallas head coach have a falling out that led to McCarty requesting a trade.
The No. 6 overall pick in the 2006 MLS Draft, McCarty never did quite settle in as a starter for the Hoops, playing 44 career matches in three seasons with FC Dallas. Still just 21, McCarty has been on the trade block all winter and will now join a San Jose squad that includes his former FC Dallas teammate Arturo Alvarez.
No word yet on the details of the trade, but San Jose is believed to be sending a conditional draft pick to FC Dallas for McCarty.
Once the deal is completed, McCarty will join a San Jose squad that can certainly use his services in central midfield. The Earthquakes drafted highly-regarded Indiana midfielder Brad Ring to try and address its central midfield issues, but McCarty provides some more experience and versatility to San Jose's roster.
Hyndman came out publicly on Wednesday and acknowledged that McCarty's time in Dallas was up, telling 3rd Degree that he would likely be dealt.

UPDATE- Centerline Soccer is reporting that San Jose denies that any deal is being made or even discussed, with San Jose head coach Frank Yallop going as far as to say he has never had talks with FC Dallas about McCarty. Meanwhile, 3rd Degree reported that FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman said nothing about a potential trade when interviewed today. So is it a case of two teams trying to throw dirt on a trade that died on the table, or did my sources get it completely wrong? We will hopefully find out soon enough.
