International Match Day
If you have been craving some quality international soccer, then today is your day.
With an international fixture date on the menu, you will not only get some important CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers, you will also get some attractive friendlies on the docket.
Mexico takes on Honduras with a chance to knock the Catrachos out of next year's qualifying with a win and a Jamaica win against Canada. Trinidad & Tobago can lock up a place in the Hexagonal round of CONCACAF qualifying with a win or tie against Cuba. If T&T loses, then Guatemala can slip into the Hexagonal with a victory against an inexperienced USA B team.
Friendlies offer up some quality match-ups as well, with England and Germany renewing their long-standing rivalry, while Brazil and Portugal square off.
If you will be watching today's matches, please feel free to share your thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comment section if this post.

That sucks...I didn't check the TV schedule when I was setting up the DVR last night, otherwise I would have taped the England-Germany game.

Ives,
You don't consider Spain vs. Chile a top friendly? Euro Champs and Chile coming of a historic win over Argentina?
Posted by: duthie | November 19, 2008 at 09:30 AM
Isn't England v Germany on GolTV and not Fox Soccer?
Posted by: RS | November 19, 2008 at 09:31 AM
wayne is out.
Posted by: dave | November 19, 2008 at 09:32 AM
Corrections? England v Germany on GolTV, not FSC. And my TV Guide shows US v Guatemala on ESPN2 at 10pm, live.
Posted by: john in atl | November 19, 2008 at 09:35 AM
I don't think the England-Germany game is on FSC (I think you just put it there as a typo as you also have the two Asian WCqs that are scheduled at the same time)...
And my TIVO is saying that Greece-Italy is on ESPN2 at 4:30 EST? Anyone else seeing this? I confirmed it by going to espn.com and it is indeed on, as is the USA women in the U-20 WC, so you could add that to the televised games, seems like a big step for ESPN to televise an international friendly, too bad it isn't the England-Germany match instead...
Posted by: Chase | November 19, 2008 at 09:39 AM
Chase...TIVO lied on the 10:00 being live.
USA-Guat will be live @ 8:00 on ESPNClassic....
ESPN2 will air it at 10:00 on delay.
Posted by: Nick | November 19, 2008 at 09:43 AM
Yes folks, England-Germany is on GolTV. The USA-Guatemala game is live on ESPN Classic at 8pm ET.
Posted by: Ives | November 19, 2008 at 09:50 AM
It does look like Italy-Greece is on ESPN2 (and ESPN2 in HD). Very interesting.
Posted by: Ives | November 19, 2008 at 09:52 AM
Looks like the US-Guat game is on ESPN Classic live at 8PM and ESPN2 (and ESPN2HD!) on tape delay at 10PM.

Italy vs. Greece could potentially be the most boring match ever.
Negative football vs. negative football.
Posted by: Brett | November 19, 2008 at 10:03 AM
Or, what the above posts say.
BTW, I don't get ESPN Desportes, but the ESPN listings say it is showing Argentina-Scotland and France-Uruguay.
Posted by: A.S. | November 19, 2008 at 10:03 AM
I had no idea that Portugal plays Brazil today. Living in Portugal is paying off. I'm going to record it tonight and watch it tomorrow.
Posted by: Ross | November 19, 2008 at 10:33 AM
It says something when Italy and Greece are on a channel almost everybody in the nation gets while the U.S. qualifier (albeit an unimportant one) is relegated to ESPN Classic.

ESPN = Disney
Literally.

Dear God,
Please let Jamaica and Honduras. Please.
Amen

Please help them win!!!!! whoops hit the post button a little to early.
Posted by: Bob | November 19, 2008 at 11:21 AM
what time does the Brazil game start
Posted by: GIMMI | November 19, 2008 at 11:27 AM
Brazil - Portugal at 7PM. Premier game of the day, I'd say. Especially since Germany and England are putting out reserve sides.
Posted by: Mig | November 19, 2008 at 11:33 AM
thanks mig
isnt the u-20 on espn today
Posted by: gimmi | November 19, 2008 at 12:03 PM
Is Brazil-Portugal on tv or will we have to find streams?
Posted by: Jacob A. | November 19, 2008 at 12:06 PM
FSC's entire budget must be sunk into the EPL and serie A, because they get the worst internationals. It's interesting that ESPN is broadcasting a non-USA international game. I would've gone all out to get Portugal-Brazil and marketed the crap out of that. Italy-Greece could be pretty boring.
Posted by: Mike_D | November 19, 2008 at 12:19 PM
yes U-20 womens wc is on the "deuce" (do they still call it that?) at 1pm. USMNT is on classic at 8pm EST and replayed in HD on epsn 2 at 10 following college b-ball. Game of the day is easily Portugal-Brazil. For me, not becuase of the Ronaldo/Kaka matchup but werent these 2 teams supposed to be setting the world on fire right about now? Brazil looks old and disinterested and Portugal looks like they are suffering growing pains under new coach Quieroz. The losing coach of this game will face some serious heat back home and if Brazil get beat again, the clock will be running on Dunga especially if Argentina perform well under Maradona today.

Anyone know when and where they're showing the Colombia friendly, if at all?

Iceland downs Malta in the marque match up of the day 1-0.
Posted by: Antonius Block | November 19, 2008 at 12:53 PM
Anybody see that amazing simulation call in the Saudi-Korea game?
Nothing like a ref deciding the outcome of a game. I can't imagine a call that could possibly have more significance than denying a penalty AND booking the attacker for simulation...2nd yellow...down to 10 men for the Saudis. Sheesh.
Posted by: Mig | November 19, 2008 at 01:16 PM
83rd minute by the way. Korea up 1-0 and is holding possession for long stretches.
Posted by: Mig | November 19, 2008 at 01:17 PM
Well, normally I don't agree with Keith Costigan about ANYTHING but the Saudi's were rather hard done by the final of 2-0 for Korea. Korea played well but that referee's decision was questionable to say the least. It MAY have been penalty and there WAS contact by the keeper on the Saudi striker but even if not a penalty, the booking for simulation was harsh.

Hey Ives, what happened to the weekend americans abroad wrap up this week? Did I just miss it? I saw the post about Bradley's goal, but I don't think the other stuff came up. Didn't Subotic score twice?

The Sweden-Holland game is just about to start. Dirk Kuyt is up front for Holland and Babel and Van Persie are on the wing.
Posted by: HenrikSuperSwedishWarrior | November 19, 2008 at 02:42 PM
Im in Stockholm but from Louisiana. Hoping for Sweden to win but i also strongly favor the Dutch. Should be a very good game though.
Posted by: HenrikSuperSwedishWarrior | November 19, 2008 at 02:44 PM
Im hoping Torres can get a hat trick in the game against Chile. Villa always seems to still his thunder during international games for Spain.
Posted by: HenrikSuperSwedishWarrior | November 19, 2008 at 02:47 PM
I'm watching Scotland - Arg here http://www.justin.tv/boquerodesdemiami
I want to see Maradona's brave new Argentinian world!
Posted by: eric | November 19, 2008 at 02:58 PM
11th minute. Kuyt gets a chance but blazes over the bar. Close though
Posted by: HenrikSuperSwedishWarrior | November 19, 2008 at 02:59 PM
I thoroughly enjoyed our girls' 3-0 win, good style of play, good talent, well done.
Posted by: Jacob A. | November 19, 2008 at 03:00 PM
Could you put these times up like 48 hours in advance? I keep reading about these games going on right now but I can't get home and record any of them.
Posted by: Chris | November 19, 2008 at 03:03 PM
whats with that guy constantly singing in the background of the Bahrain-Australia. The commentator isn't quite so bad either.

Goal Japan. Tatsuya Tanaka. Poor defending there.
Posted by: Isaac | November 19, 2008 at 03:54 PM
Does anybody know a website that is streaming the US vs Guatemala game. Like most people, I don't have ESPN classic (or any cable)?

WHAT A STRIKE BY KEIJI TAMADA! The keeper couldn't hold it and what a hit from 20 yards. magnificent.

Go Naka!
Posted by: Isaac | November 19, 2008 at 04:56 PM
Another goal for Japan. Tanaka gets all his hard work payed off. Off a great cross from Nakamura. then a great header at a tough angle. 3-0 Japan.
Posted by: Isaac | November 19, 2008 at 04:59 PM
I'm so happy Japan is winning. Now all that needs to happen is USA beats Guate and this will have been the perfect day.

ANOTHER goal for Gekas. 1-0 greece
Posted by: Isaac | November 19, 2008 at 05:44 PM
1-1 goal for Luca Toni.
Posted by: Isaac | November 19, 2008 at 05:49 PM
ridiculous marking there. Luca toni is the last player in the WORLD you want to lose on a set piece.

Spain has spanked Chile 3-0. PK from Villa, goals from Torres and Cazorla.

Wow... Brazil fully embarassed Portugal. 6 to 2...
Posted by: JP | November 19, 2008 at 10:43 PM
Yeah, couldn't believe that Brazil score. Did C. Ronaldo play?
Posted by: A.S. | November 19, 2008 at 10:53 PM
Yes. Both Brazil and Portugal had full strength squads. Portugal scored first at the 4th minute. After that, it was all Brazil.
C. Ronaldo played poorly and was marked tight. Kaka played very well, setting up several of the goals. 3 by Luis Fabiano, 1 each by Maicon, Elano and Adriano...
Posted by: JP | November 20, 2008 at 10:43 AM
Portugal has been struggling, and the game against Brazil was indicative of this. Hoping that Queiroz can rally the troops and get some defensive consistency.
