Bradley names USA roster vs. Guatemala

U.S. national team coach Bob Bradley has named a 17-man roster for the U.S. team's World Cup qualifying match against Guatemala set for next Wednesday in Guatemala City. There are no real surprises, though one absence from the list is sure to rile up some of you.

Here is the roster:

GOALKEEPERS: Tim Howard, Brad Guzan.

DEFENDERS: Oguchi Onyewu, Carlos Bocanegra, Heath Pearce, Steve Cherundolo, Frankie Hejduk, Jay DeMerit.

MIDFIELDERS: Michael Bradley, Maurice Edu, Sacha Kljestan, Pablo Mastroeni, Eddie Lewis.

FORWARDS: Landon Donovan, Eddie Johnson, Brian Ching, Clint Dempsey.

The fact that it's only a 17-man roster tells me that Bob Bradley will be adding a few names to the list before the team actually departs for Guatemala.

What do you think of the squad? Happy with it? Angry? Wondering where Kenny Cooper is? Share your thoughts below.

whatever... bradley needs to watch some MLS games

YES. I am SOOOOOO HAPPY. No Kenny Cooper. On the flip side, I'm elated Kljestan was added.

How could I forget EJ's inclusion? This is the best Thursday EVER!

KC must be fuming. Also, have we not learned that Adu is the engine of this team by now? Kljestan is okay, not sure about Edu and Bradley. Ching should be replaced by Buddle.

I really thought he was going to give the Olympic kids a break. Guess not... I hope Mikey doesn't have dead legs by the time he gets back to Europe.

What's Cooper have to do to get a look? Scoring goals surely isn't enough, but I don't think that scoring is even a considered criteria for Bradley as he keeps calling up Eddie Johnson.

I think Freddy Adu needs to start being part of these call-ups. He's among the most creative and challenging players the US has and he needs the EXPERIENCE.

Ives, do you know why he wasn't added?

this roster makes me sick. the only hope is this roster will only be half of our starters by the time the world cup comes around.
Bob needs to start playing the tea we will see 2 years from now so thay can start to gel. Gel like the Olympic team we just watched.
EJ, pathetic.

I understand Adu is not on the line up because of his new Club, But come on Bradley Eddie Johnson needs to come back when he actually earns it. Copper needs to be on these team.
Bradley be open minded please before its to late........!

Hahahaha, personally I just think Big Bob is showing us SBI commenters who's boss. Serves us right for telling him who to select. :)

Adu's absence bothers me more than Cooper's. (But I suppose that Bradley might feel that Adu would be a late sub at best in this game, so his time is better spent in Monaco.)

Eddie Johnson????
Really?
He must have really good pictures or something.

i don't get why cooper isnt invited... Besides that i love that ching and sasha were invited

Was Eddie Johnson one of the guys that scored against Barbados? Good thing Bob has called upon a proven goal scorer for this one.

On a serious note, Kenny HAS to be one of the late additions we'll see before the Nats take off for just south of Mexico. Maybe some issues getting FCD to let him make the trip?

I don't know what Bob will ever do if Johnson, Twellman, or Ching aren't available.

Lord knows the only formation he "understands" is the 4-4-2. How will we ever not score without those guys?

Oh, yeah. I forgot. Onyewu is our goalscorer.

Bob Bradley is a tool.

Did you guys forget to count? There is 17 players on the list. Room for one more... who will it be?

I'm assuming Beasley is still recovering from injuries; otherwise, Beasley like Adu, should be on the squad to play Guatemala.

Sacha Kljestan? Really?

Why not let Guzan get to Villa and settle in? It's not like he'll supplant Howard.

Mastroeni and Hejduk? Are you joking?

Sea Otter:

4-4-2 the only formation he understands? I wish. Haven't we been running a 4-5-1 for the past few years?

Either he's letting Cooper hopefully help Dallas get into the playoffs or Bradley just doesn't like him and has some love affair with Eddie Johnson. Cooper is in prime condition right now. I think Bradley is a decent coach, but he also plays too safe and conservative in choices at times. He usually chooses the "same, usual group of players" which perplexes me. Its probably because it is a qualifier and he doesn't want to "make a mistake," so he only goes with what he's used to. I can understand letting Alitdore heal from his ankle injury, but he needs to call in a few different players who deserve a nod. At least no more Wolff!

Adu and Jozy needs to start battling for roster spots on their new teams.

Ives,
I don't think he'll be adding a few names. I believe only 1 more name (the 18th player).

Hopefully that final spot will go to either Adu, Altidore, or Cooper. Most likely, it'll be Cooper since Adu and Altidore are with their new clubs.

When Guatemala puts 10 men behind the ball (or maybe even puts 10 men in its own penalty area), we will regret not having the height advantage and heading ability that certain someone Ives mentions would bring. I hope we will see that certain someone on the final roster.

from ussoccer.com

"All 17 players were part of the roster that handed Barbados an 8-0 defeat in the first leg of Second Round qualifying on June 15 at The Home Depot Center."

B.bradley is thinking if it works against Barbados, it should work against Guatemala... oooo boy

I hope sleeping with Bob's wife and Michael's mom was worth it for Cooper.

I'm sure she's hot and all, but to jeopardize your national team career over a piece of cougar ass seems a little shortsighted.

boring.
by the way, does anyone know anything about the u-20 matches against Guatemala played this week in Florida?

GOALKEEPERS: Tim Howard, Brad Guzan. (OK)

DEFENDERS: Oguchi Onyewu, Carlos Bocanegra, Heath Pearce, Steve Cherundolo, Frankie Hejduk, Jay DeMerit.
TKAE OUT Heath Pearce, Frankie Hejduk or Jay DeMerit and ADD EDU and WYNNE.

MIDFIELDERS: Michael Bradley, Maurice Edu, Sacha Kljestan, Pablo Mastroeni, Eddie Lewis.
TKAE OUT PABLO, EDDIE and put EDU in the back. BRING ON HOLDEN ADU FELIHABER OR DAX
_______________________

FORWARDS: Landon Donovan, Eddie Johnson, Brian Ching, Clint Dempsey.
TAKE OUT EJ AND CHING AND ADD ALTIDORE COOPER OR DAVIES

THIS IS DISTURBING that Bradley has not put one decent team together besides Argentina and we are only 2 years from the WC

Is 17 the maximum?

*****

EJ?
My god.

And Ching?

*****

Mo Edu has been called up for every US team game this year - U-23 & senior squad. Johnson & Carver need to start taking lessons from Fergie & Wenger so that Edu's knocks & strains come when there are national team games.

I can't believe any of you guys were actually thinking Kenny Cooper would be called up. I don't care what he's been doing in MLS, the guy hasn't trained with the National Team in over a year and only has 2 caps, and with the US going into Guatemala for a World Cup Qualifier, there was NO WAY Bob Bradley was going to bring him.

That said, Sasha Kljestan doesn't belong there, neither does Eddie Johnson. And I'm also disappointed that Michael Bradley was called in. I would really like to see a game without that guy on the field for once (with his absence being by choice, not because of yellow/red card).

US Soccer had the number of WCQ games played and goals scored after each players name. EJ is 8 games played and 8 goals scored. I'm guessing that's why he gets a call. Ching also has a decent record. It was mentioned earlier this is the most difficult game of the group. Maybe Bob doesn't want to try something new in this game. I sure am sick of waiting. And Cooper needs the caps so he can play in England - JUST KIDDING!!! LOL

last spot he is holding in hopes that C.Reyna decide to come back to "lead" this team

Buddle deserves a call up just as much as Cooper. And I think Buddle's style is more suited for our regional play.

Ugh. Ching is an inferior version of Cooper at this point, and not having Adu is questionable as well.

Wynne for Pearce, d14? Lay off the hardstuff man...p.s. How do you add Edu when he is already there?

I see letting Adu and Altidore go off to get sorted with their new clubs...but Cooper deserves this. He just has, pure and simple.

Wow, Ching over Kenny Cooper

Holding out one pick? He's f-ing with us. He's like - "Hey Honey, wach this. I'm going to name the team and leave off this kid, Kenny Cooper, that all the bloggers have a big hard one for. Just watch the blogs after I do it. It's so much fun having all this power to ruin so many people's day. Muuuaah haa haa haa."

Add Freddy and Coop!!!

Does anyone know if Beasley is still injured and/or why he is not on this roster?

FIRE BOB BRADLEY, NOW.

Players we no longer need...
Frankie Hejduk- Puts the senior in senior team.
Pablo Mastroeni- Mr. Red Card himself.
Eddie Lewis- The American Beckham!
Eddie Johnson- I just can't understand why we keep bringing this guy in. Why not give a young buck like Charlie Davies a chance.
Brian Ching-he's like Kenny Cooper with less goals and skill on the ball.

I neve thought I would say this but I hope we lose this game badly so Bob Bradley gets fired. This regime is really starting to feel like Bruce Arena part II.

What I don't understand is if Cooper was never going to be on WCQ list, then at least he should've been in the Olympics.

I think BB is reading this blog and will decide his 18th player based on what people are saying here... :-)

The Kenny Cooper omission is a little strange to me. I know Bradley feels he isn't ready yet for full Nats duty, but whatever, if Kenny keeps playing like this, Bradley won't be able to omit him. Also the absence of a true LB is the oddest thing to me? Didn't he see the Olympics and how much this hurt us?

EJ AGAIN....WHAT THE HELL...WHAT THE HELL.

i understand you cant play adu and altidore because they are just getting into the euro season. but how do you leave cooper off again. for EJ and ching.

until EJ proves that he deserves to be called up again, and yes i said deserves. he needs to stay his butt on the club level and find his form when he was actually good.

There are better strikers in the US system than EJ and ching. EJ hasnt done anything, and barbados doesnt count. Bradley needs to get his head out of his butt.

Many people are (understandably) taking out their olympic sized frustrations on this roster selection, but the starting 11 will be just about what it currently should be right now. Beas and Altidore are recovering and Adu needs to meet his new club team. Now, I agree that EJ instead of Cooper right now is a glaring mistake bordering on preposterous but I can craft a starting 11 from the list that is practically the best and most experienced 11 we have to play in this game:

--Donovan-----Ching--
Lewis---------Dempsey
----Edu---Bradley----
Pearce------Cherundolo
----Boca--Gooch------
------Howard---------

*but seriously, Cooper should be playing*

EJ has 8 goals in 8 WCQ games. I think he gets called until he stops scoring.

Why is Bob Bradley still employed? PLEASE tell me the USSF will hire a new coach before 2010!!!!

Looks like Bradley is going out of his way to limit conflicts with MLS. The small number of the roster (17? Have we ever called so few players.) In the fact that (excepting Lewis, who's not official yet I presume) not more than one player from each squad has been selected. Otherwise, it's a predictable (if small) group that neither horrifies me, nor really excites me either.

I can't wait to see the reaction if Josh Wolff is the one player he adds to the squad.

bravo to eddie lewis and frankie for holding it down after all this time

Let's face it, there is no way that Michael Bradley is ever going to be left out of a National Team side for as long as Michael's daddy runs the team. It doesn't matter how badly little Michael plays for the National Team (or even the U23 Olympics), daddy is going to start his son no matter what.

No, as far as I know, Bob Bradley is not Eddie Johnson's father, so I don't know what the excuse is there.

Ok Once again it show that Bradley is an Idiot and is becoming like his mentor Bruce Arena. WoW don't we have other Striker(fowards) why he always depend on this two guys. Kenny Cooper is having a great season scoring goals, Buddle is doing great why not give a chance to them, Is like we already know the LIST by memory same roster everytime. PEOPLE DON'T YOU GET IT THAT THIS CLOWN OF A COACH DON'T KNOW CRAP ABOUT SCOUTING OR TALENT< GET RID OF HIM SOON.

maurice edu is awful, why is he still in this lineup

Regardless of the Cooper situation, I'd like to see Davies called up in place of Johnson. Jozy and Freddy I can understand doing w/out so they can get to playing club ball, but Davies isn't adjusting to a new club, is he? He brings something similar to the table skill-wise, except, oh yeah, he doesn't look like a lost little lamb everytime the ball goes near him.

I'm glad that Ching is there. Though he's not as exciting as some of our other options at forward, he can manage the position efficiently and he's consistent, which is key to a qualifier AT Guatemala. Cooper still should be in the camp though, on the bench at least. Cooper has 13 league goals this year and in his only cap he scored. Not really sure why he's getting the old shoulder.

And EJ? Well I agree with everyone here that he has no place on this team until he proves his worth for Fulham.

All that said, how about a little celebration for Demerit!!!!!!!!!!!

Not sure about Hedjuk. If we're going to bring in some support at RB, how about Wynne. Screw Carver.

Finally, we have seen many players punished for making very bad decisions on the pitch that affect the team's results. However, Michael Bradley seems immune to this punishment. I have historically not bought into calls of nepotism, but I'm left wondering why he's never disciplined.

Starting XI

---------------Ching-----------------

--------------------Donovan----------

Lewis-------------------------Dempsey

-----------Bradley----Mastroeni------

Pearce-------Boca------Gooch-----Dolo

--------------Howard-----------------

BORING!!!!!!!!!!!

I've never really questioned Bradley's player selections before because ther were justifications for some inclusions and exclusions but not calling in Cooper is criminal. I hope Bradley will add an 18th player and it's Cooper. Seriously, what does Kenny have to do for respect?

Robert Bradley has a fine, Princeton educated, mind. He has studied the sport of soccer in depths you can only dream of; and brings clear sighted rationality where you, his critics, bring only fruitless emotionalism. Guatemala is the strongest foe in our group, and it is no moment for bringing in untested and dubious talents at key positions. This veteran squad has strong defensive midfielders, an experienced backline, and proven world cup qualifying goal scorers. It is an intelligent man's side, and will maximize our chances of victory.
Think, gentlemen, before you speak.

I hope they lose to Guate and Bradley will be gone.I hope...

Wow. Really? REALLY? I'm 16 and I could have picked a MUCH better roster than this tool. Bradley obviously is just another Arena, choosing the same old players. Remember Santino Quaranta in WCQs? Yea. Eddie Johnson is that player now. Except hopefully he's not on coke and pain killers.

I say, promote Rongen to the senior international team. He's the only coach who isn't afraid to put the BEST players on the field all the time. Bradley and Nowak do what will keep their jobs. Tools.

4NOW:
it reads put EDU in the back.
Also, it says take 2 of those 3 defenders and bring on Wynne and put Edu back there.

IF we have one guy who can mark the best in the world, it is Wynne and no one else. he has the speed and the strnegth. As i said before, he has shades of Roberto Carlos without the technical skill and he will not need too much skill if we develop a skilled midfiled which we showed in the olympics is a possibility.

4now: just bc you watch soccer does not mean you know what you are talking about

Why does EJ have to prove himself at Fulham when he consistantly scores goals in WCQ games??? Did I mention:

EJ has 8 goals is 8 WCQ games. Including against Barbados - the last game played in WCQ.

KDF: you know what you are talking about
promote Rongen

The Fischer King - if it's not time for untested and dubious talents at key positions, then Adu and Altidore (if he's healthy) should be called.

Yech, zero ball skills in that midfield. Who the heck plays the #10 role (unless Donovan slides back to center mid)? Bradley/Edu pairing gives you very little offense. Bradley/Sasha is very shaky and turnover prone. I like Sasha's creativity, but his first touch is dangerously bad for this level of football. I hope Freddie gets added. I can understand no Jozy due to his ankle but Freddie needs to be called. We need his ball skills in the midfield.

What is wrong with Bob Bradley?!? EJ and Ching are god awful. I don't think that anyone can make an argument against Cooper. I can't believe that Bradley thinks that Cooper isn't ready. It's ridiculous.

Alex, "C.Reyna to lead team" = very nice!

Betinho,
I believe he scored 8 of those goals in 3 games, he stopped scoring a while ago.

Maybe Coop should try not scoring. It works for EJ.

I like Cooper but what does he do that is physical? is he prolific int he air? How many of his goals are headers? He's a big guy who plays like he's 5'9". I really dig him but I understand why he's not on THIS team. Ching is more physical and better in the air. Period. EJ scores in WCQ. Period. Everyone get you underwear out of your cracks.

KP - Barbados was too long ago. Even a bong hitting dope fiend can remember that far back (not saying that fits you...just an example of how that wasn't very long ago -lol).

I can't believe Ching and Johnson get called up ahead of Cooper. This is getting ridiculous. Why not give Davies a call, too? F you Bob Bradley. F your stupid empty bucket 442 formation in your f'in stupid face.

I feel fellow US fans are too hard on Bob Bradley and Michael Bradley. Bob Bradley has done a fine job with the USMNT. The game against Argentina was a very strong performance. The one point I don't understand is why Adu and Beasley were not selected for this squad unless there are injury/club team considerations at play.

As for Michael Bradley, he is a very skilled player who is here on his own merits. Calls of nepotism don't make sense and are tiring at this point. Give it a rest!

Why doesn't anyone in the media ask Bob Bradley about this? Do they even write articles chastising him over his 'dumb' roster decisions?

All I am getting from these rosters he has named is that he seems just plain dumb. Don't know any other way to put it. Well, inept maybe?

Karma is a b*tch. Watch EJ score against Guatemala.

However, I do agree with the rest of you guys, EJ needs to give his spot to someone else. I really would like to see either Jozy or Cooper as the strikers.

I'm glad EJ is in and I can watch him donkey-touch the ball with his back to the goal, dribble all the back into his half of the field and pass it back to Guzan.

Does Bob Bradley keep calling these guys up b/c they're the only phone #s he has?

For those that cry about the inclusion of Hejduk and Lewis, please keep in mind that despite thier age:

Eddie Lewis is the best free kick taker the US has, and can play both left mid and left back.

Frankie Hejduk is FAR and AWAY the fittest player at any level, and like Lewis, can play left back in a pinch. The only player who can cover ground like Frankie (and probably not for as long) is everybody's (2nd) favorite man-child, Marvell Wynne. Sadly, Frankie still provides more than Marvell in the offensive third at this point. (Goal in Gold Cup 2007)

This isn't FIFA '08 on your PS3.

This is a qualifier in a country where we'll be hated, cursed, spit at, and have things thrown at us, and we NEED a result.

This not a game for the Brek Sheas and Dax McCartys of the world, talented though they might be.

Bring the veterans.

I've got to question the soccer knowledge of the people asking for Adu and Jozy...

I'm with EA and Fisher King. This is the right squad for this game.

this is the toughest game (by far) of the hexagonal. therefore bradley is picking the best, most experienced team to win right now. some of these guys will play in south africa. a few almost certainly won't. my only complaint is that landon and deuce shouldn't really be named forwards -- they're both much better running at people out of midfield. harsh fact is that striker is our weakest position. not a big fan of ej, but who else do we really have?

Behind the scenes FCD rejected BB's call up of Coop just as we did the transfer offers!

Just playin', the boy deserves to at least sit on the bench and be available should a desperate situation arise.

correction: not hexagonal, home and away group. still our toughest game of this phase.

Very safe selection with Bradley. He basically went with a team that he's familiar with which is both good and bad.

Howard - Can't argue his selection.

Guzan - Good showing in Beijing. Probably not necessary for this game.

Gooch - Thought he was hurt?

Boca - Good selection. One of our most consistent backs.

Pearce - Did well in recent friendlies. Will probably own this spot for a long time unless Spector gets healthy and in form fast or DMB actually makes the switch.

Cherundolo - Nothing exciting here. Marvell Wynne seems to be the favorite to take over here soon.

Hejduk - I suppose Bradley just likes have a wild card here to pick up unnecessary Yellows.

DeMerit - Becoming a favorite to unseat Gooch. Just as strong in the air but better positioning and smarter tackler. Also doesn't get called for fouls as often.

Bradley - Interesting. Beginning to speculate if this was a favor for his son given his performance in Beijing.

Edu - Did well playing in the back four. Made better runs than Bradley, even out of the back line.

Sacha - Inconsistent play but shows flashes of promise. Good for midfield creativity.

Pablo - Bradley's other wild card to pick up necessary Yellows. Good experience but why when you already have Bradley and Edu?

Lewis - Sadly the best option out on the left flank. Sadly only because US has failed to produce a good replacement.

Donovan - All Time US Goal Scorer. Why not?

Dempsey - Needs to regain his form. Not sure if a WCQ is a good match for that.

Ching - Good pairing option for Donovan. Can do all the dirty work and spring Donovan.

EJ - As I stated earlier, for every cap this guy gets the terrorists win and a puppy is thrown to the flames.

Cooper and Davies should be in rather than EJ and Bradley.

Keep in mind folks, Bradley wants and needs guys that have experience in hostile situations. I'm not sure Adu and others are ready to have urine bombs tossed at them. I'm not a big Pablo fan, but I think in this kind of game, he might be needed. Would of liked to have seen Cooper, but he'll be in the mix soon enough. And off topic, but has anyone noticed Blanco has gotten the call from SGE??

I agree, this roster seems a little same ol', same ol' to me. However, constantly bringing in Eddie Johnson (his goal scoring ratio aside) vexes me. I know it's hard to call up Cooper for a qualifier with very little experience, but the only way he can get experience is by getting called up. Quite the conundrum.

Also, given the recent ESPN article on the lack of discipline on the part of the US, this roster seems poised to continue that, with Bradley, Pablo, and Hejduk all showing a knack for picking up stupid, costly fouls at the most inopportune times.

So like I said, I'm not surprised, nor excited about this roster.

Shocked no one has mentioned Convey. He is at full fitness again. Pre-injury he was one of our top 5 national team players. Time to mix him back in. Eddie Lewis is just too old and is in semiretirment now at the Galaxy.

Also guys - yes Kenny Cooper has been a MLS monster and deserves caps, but you can't throw him in raw in Guatemala city. In hostile situations like that poise and expierence is more important than having a good last dozen games in the MLS.

I think the exclusion of KC means that Bradley thinks that he is not ready for Guatemala City. EJ has played games in Poland, England, and more importantly, has scored goals in El Salvador, Trinidad, and Venezuela. He has scored against Guatemala twice on our soil.

I think it's likely that KC plays the Home leg, and continues to gain the experience that EJ has.

Am I the only one who actually likes Davies ??

Looks like Califf and FC Midtjylland beat Manchester City today.

Who cares anymore? I sure don't.

MasterShake, I like Davies as well and it looks like he has improved a lot over the past year.

Effmanny - Good point on the 'lovely' Guatemalan crowd.

But selecting Cooper doesn't mean he has to start. Besides, don't you think it's also beneficial for him to experience that type of environment?

The four people who I didn't want to see on the roster (Johnson, Ching, Lewis, and Hejduk) are all on it. I love the decisions Bob has made this past year, I am just ready to see some younger agressive talent. Remember this is for 2010, I hope Hejduk, Lewis, and Ching will have realized by then they cannot keep up with the Messi's and the Ronaldo's of the world.

id be shocked if EJ plays 10 games for Fulham this year.

MasterShake - Yes, i like Davies too. But the exclusion of some of the Olympics' guys is understandble because their clubs need them; also, BB needs to be on their good side.

I think we need to bring the injured back slowly. Convey and Beasley have both started thier club seasons now and will most likely appear for the full 90 the saturday preceeding. I think it'd be silly to call them up and put a lot of stress on them when we can go more conservative with this lineup.

I just hope that Bradley realizes that when push comes to shove and we need our full team, that Adu and Altidore must be a part.

It is time for Frankie to retire from the National Team. A hustle player may be effective against Guatemala, but we should be giving other more skilled players a chance at the position.

Whay is anybody surprised? There are no surprised here though I am surprised he's hitting some clubs for the Olymians. They must be fuming. As long as we have sonny boy, we're good for a card or two

BB is a TOOL. Please fire him NOW

MBOW somebody has to take Frankie's place otherwise he has to continue to be called up. That means Simek needs to get healthy or Wynne needs to improve dramaticly. He was horrendous in the olympics

PS - He's never going to dress Cooper so get used to it.

HEdjuk, Mastreoni and Ching...please explain this crap to tme. How can Hedjuk who is a running red card every time he plays is on this roster. Mastreoni who is old and makes stupid plays when the stage is at it's biggest set and Ching who sucks, can't sugarcote anyother way. The only reason why B. Ching is here is because Ching is Donovans boyfriend eeerrrr I meant Best friend. But since when is Donovan a Lionel Messi or Ronaldhino to say who should be on this squad or not. I can't believe no Freddy Adu or Holden or Altidore....or M. Wynne.....what is up with that.
