Who will the USA play in Barbados second leg?
With the USA sitting on a comfortable 8-0 lead after the first leg of their series against Barbados, the U.S. national team is poised to play the second leg without several key players. Now what remains is figuring out which new players will get a look in the match in Barbados.
The following ten players were released by U.S. coach Bob Bradley:
Brian Ching (Houston Dynamo), Clint Dempsey (Fulham FC), Steve Cherundulo (Hannover 96), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy), Brad Guzan (Chivas USA), Frankie Hejduk (Columbus Crew), Maurice Edu (Toronto FC), Sacha Kljestan (Chivas USA), Pablo Mastroeni (Colorado Rapids) and Matt Reis (New England Revolution).
With Danny Szetela and Chris Seitz the first two new players to be called in, that still leaves eight slots to be filled. Keep in mind that MLS players with games this weekend are very unlikely to be called in. With the Chicago Fire and Chivas USA playing each other on Thursday, we could see several players from those teams (such as Chris Rolfe and Justin Mapp).
So what kind of starting lineup will we see in the second leg? Here's one possibility:
--------------------Johnson----------------------
Beasley-------------Adu-------------------Rolfe
--------------Bradley-----Szetela---------------
Pearce------Bocanegra--Onyewu--------Simek
---------------------Howard---------------------
I'm not sure if Aston Villa transfer target Frankie Simek is healthy but if he is I can see him getting a call in. Chris Rolfe should merit a look as well. And sorry folks but Kenny Cooper will be in New Jersey playing the Red Bulls so he won't get a call.
What new players would you like to see get a look? Share your thoughts below.

Why was Sacha Kljestan released, especially with Chivas USA not playing? He's shown glimpses in his few appearances with the nats, so wouldn't this be a great opportunity to use him. He'd be an exponentially better option on the right than Chris Rolfe.

What about Johann Smith? Kamani Hill? Ferrari? Any of those guys get a chance?
Posted by: Ryan | June 18, 2008 at 12:26 PM
SUBOTIC!!!!
Posted by: Adam | June 18, 2008 at 12:26 PM
Not sure if this is possible, but wouldn't this be a great time to try to cap-tie guys like Subotic, Torres, etc.?

i know you want to get DMB back in shape.. but I don't know if I would want to do it in the second leg here.. Maybe try and get Baki to declare he will play for the US ;)

Anybody know where in Miami the team is working out? Are the practices open?

Why does BB take forever to release the roster? Other national teams release the roster two weeks in advance, but we have to wait for the friday before? Call everybody today so they can train for the rest of the week!!

Would love to see Mapp get a run out with Bradley, Adu and Kljestan. That is some serious skill in the middle which we have lacked for quite some time... I say we go wtih just Eddie up front and those 4 plus a stopper type right behind the middle 4.... perhapd even have Bradley play the stopper roll and put Eddie up top with Rolfe

I really hope we don't see a Bocanegra-Gooch pairing in the middle for this match. The sheer lack of athleticism between the two of them really scares me. I'd like to see Demerit get a full 90.
Confused about why Kljestan isn't being called in for this one.

Sacha was released to play on Thursday for Chivas. Interesting to see if he is called back in. Should be in my opinion.
Posted by: Jason | June 18, 2008 at 12:41 PM
Mapp is no where near int'l quality yet. Would love to see Subotic, but I'm not sure he would come yet, having not decided on a national team. Altidore!!!!!!!

Not sure Bob planned on winning 8-0 and releasing 10 players. Got to cut him some slack for this game I think, but it would have been nicer to see him a little bit more prepared.

I agree that Ferrari and Subotic and Hill should come in. Maybe Bryan Argues or Torres from Mexico and Michael Orozco.
Posted by: Robert | June 18, 2008 at 12:48 PM
um...I think Josh Wolff is available...
Posted by: Betinho | June 18, 2008 at 12:49 PM
Hill, Ferrari??? Did you watch the Toulouse Tournament? These guys are no where near good enough for the senior NT yet.
I know the US is playing what amounts to a pubside, but I think there are far more players in the national team pool that have been performing well that deserve the cap before either of these guys, such as Simek (if healthy), Klestjian, Cooper, Orozco, Subotic (if he wants to player for us), Torres (same as Subotic), etc.
And wasn't Smith recently released by Bolton? Though not having a team hasn't stopped Bradley from calling up people recently...

I think if people think Mapp can not hang at the international level then they are fooling themselves... he has the talent and merely needs the motivation. We need a solid back-up on the LW and he can be just that. Eddie Lewis can't go forever guys and Robbie Rogers has not been given a real shot yet as well.
Posted by: Andy in Atlanta | June 18, 2008 at 12:51 PM
Robbie Rogers. I think the Crew have a game but who cares. He needs to get some time.
Posted by: jeff | June 18, 2008 at 12:56 PM
Does anyone know if yellow cards carry over? if so, dont play gooch. why risk him getting another silly yellow and possibly missing a game.
Posted by: adam | June 18, 2008 at 12:57 PM
Robbie Rogers was one of the most skilled players on the ball @ the FIFA U20's last year. He has pace and good vision as well. Very much in the Joe Cole mold I think. He will get his chance in the future.
Posted by: Andy in Atlanta | June 18, 2008 at 12:58 PM
I think Onyewu will sit this one out since he is carrying a yellow. They won't want to risk him missing the next match in qualifying just so he can play in what really is a meaningless game.
Also MLS is stupid not observing Int'l dates, its frustrating to national team fans and to MLS coaches, we've already heard Gullit & others complain..what will it take for those boneheads to make the change?

There's always Rossi!
Ok, I'm sorry...I simply could not resist.
Posted by: mig22 | June 18, 2008 at 01:00 PM
I won't be surprised if Zizzo is called in to camp too. After all he was called in earlier this year and being out of season it seems like an obvious choice.
Posted by: KC | June 18, 2008 at 01:01 PM
Andy, you've got Mapp's situation backwards. He has loads of motivation and desire and cojones, but lacks the talent. It's nice to see him try to run at people and be dangerous, but he just doesn't have the ball skill to be effective doing that against good international teams. He often looks out of control and uncoordinated when he's making those runs down the flank. You can get away with that against CONCACAF teams, but not in higher level competition.
Posted by: Joamiq | June 18, 2008 at 01:07 PM
Damn you, mig22. You gotta be quick here.
Posted by: A.S. | June 18, 2008 at 01:07 PM
Kenny Cooper. But here's the deal...I'm fine with Cooper NOT playing now as long as I know that he will be in the national team fold when it really counts.
HOWEVER, if we get to that point and Bob Bradley starts feeding me some BS line about how "Cooper doesn't have the national team experience to merit a call up", then I will just have to say you had x-amount of games to give it to him and you didn't.
Sigh...pointless anyway...
I say we just let the guys who played at the Toulon Tournament play Barbados. It would give them a nice confidence boost.
Posted by: HomeyBoehme | June 18, 2008 at 01:09 PM
When the game got out of hand, why wouldn't you just instruct Onyewu to get a second yellow? He'd sit for a meaningless return game and re-set for the next round.
Posted by: Chg | June 18, 2008 at 01:13 PM
It seems that either we are treating this as some kind of ridiculously hard game to win (guys complaining about Bradley after an 8-0 first leg) or treating it like some pick-up playground game (guys saying we should cap-tie players who are nowhere near ready to play for the nats).
I'm in the middle...we can definitely afford to play a young lineup. Having said that, this is still a damn world cup qualifier. We shouldn't be calling up untested kids just to get them a cap, that's ridiculous.
Of course we're not going to lose 9-0, but we can't put out a U-20 team for no reason in a legitimate WC qualifier. A happy medium between the two extreme positions is the best way to go.
Posted by: kpugs | June 18, 2008 at 01:13 PM
Chg, because that is completely classless. Either he'd risk injuring another player in an 8-0 win, the ref would be subjected to a "fake" tirade (which is a joke, you can't treat a ref like that) to get him sent off, or what? Intentional hand ball? Risking further suspension when he is reported as intentionally getting sent off?
Go back to classless teams like Mexico with that garbage, I would be ashamed if my team behaved that way.
Posted by: kpugs | June 18, 2008 at 01:15 PM
I would like to see some of the Scandinavian-based guys get a look: Lee Nguyen, Troy Perkins, and J. White come to mind.
Posted by: Ilya | June 18, 2008 at 01:16 PM
hey brett,
you ready for the second leg? The TGIF 11 need you for the game on Sunday, you played so well in the first leg. I don't even think you need to curtail your Saturday night drinking, Barbados is weeeaaak.

"Why does BB take forever to release the roster? Other national teams release the roster two weeks in advance, but we have to wait for the friday before? Call everybody today so they can train for the rest of the week!!"
Other national teams don't have to worry about the domestic league blatantly ignoring FIFA dates. Bob plays nice with the league for games like this so nobody is angry when he yanks the players away for important games.
I'd like to see Kljestan and Adu get a start. Beas should get 90 minutes so he can get fit again. Szetela should see some minutes. Bornstein might get called in so Bob can take a look at him in training and see what his status is. Same with Simek.
I think we are almost guaranteed an EJ / Rolfe partnership up top.
Posted by: Ted | June 18, 2008 at 01:20 PM
I think Kljestan was released to play tonight and may get a call back for the weekend. Here's what I'd like to see:
Seitz
Pearce DeMerit Califf Anybody
Beasley Adu Edu Kljestan
Johnson Rolfe
Posted by: Bill | June 18, 2008 at 01:22 PM
If Johann Smith got released, JCO should have him in for a tryout.
I'd like to see Orozco get his first cap, and are there any guys in Europe that we haven't heard from in a while that might be able to help with qualifying? What're Brian West and Robbie Russell doing these days? They aren't playing at national team calibre, but they don't need to be for this game.

groovester- i got the callup, but BB has told me to keep it on the downlow.... i'll be a surprise start and be the first USMN player to get a hattrick of goals and assists.... im not greedy, so after i score my hattrick, ill be laying off the passes to assist a hattrick...
Chase- >.< i wouldnt evaluate anyone negatively on the Toulouse Tournament.... there was no team unity and no decent playmaking... the forwards had zero help...
altho i will say i saw positive things from Nguyen, Hill and Shea..
-----x-x-x-x---------x-x--x-x-x-x-----
------Bernardo---Rolfe-------
Nguyen/Roggers--Adu--Szetela---Kljestan
Pearce--Demerit--Califf--Hill
im going out on a limb and will say BB will call up Bernardo... ok, maybe not but i can dream cant i :D
does anyone else see BB possibly using guys who could be going to the olympics a shot at some game experience....????
Posted by: brett | June 18, 2008 at 01:41 PM
I'm thinking that Beckerman deserves to be in there, at least in some capacity
Posted by: Mark | June 18, 2008 at 01:46 PM
I really don't think Rolfe has what it takes to be a quality Int'l. I don't want to see him play, let alone start. Even he could be productive against Barbados though..heck I'd bet even Chad Barrett would score against them.
Posted by: KC | June 18, 2008 at 01:53 PM
Well it is time to let the young players to come up and give everything they got. We need to look for the new face for the future of the Men National Team. Looking ahead of 2014. We need to look for a new striker and I saw one in the Tourment Toulouse the name is Brek Shea. Now that there is rumors the Man. United is after him. I think he is great and have the height and skill. we can try new comers like Simek, Bryan Argues, Orosco,Johann smith, Zizzo, Zsetela, Adu, Altidore, Ferrari, Subotic, Torres, Sasha, and many more. can mixed them up with Bradley, Bacanegra, Beasley, pearce, jonathan Spector, Eddie Lewis & Eddie Johnson. Let give this kids a chance to learn for the Veteran and let try to see how the do in a game like this that will help a lot the Olympic team... WoW I wish we could of us Alvarez in this lineup too.
Posted by: Angel | June 18, 2008 at 02:06 PM
KC- in all honesty i truely want him to get calledup just so he can get the $$$... i dont want him to play and risk a chance of an injury... he's too valueable for the fire to get injured on a WCQ leg we are already up 8-0... (despite the fact i put him in my lineup)
forwards i want to get called up (barring injury)... Ferrari, Smith, Cooper, Bernardo, and Shea. altho i dont know if he is labeled a forward, but the game against the Italians he did VERY well...
Posted by: brett | June 18, 2008 at 02:07 PM
Angel- id rather see Rogers then Alvarez... altho i wouldnt be upset in the slightest if Alvarez got the call up... both seem quality, but i think Rogers is just as talented but a bit faster
Posted by: brett | June 18, 2008 at 02:09 PM
I won't be surprised with Rolfe & Mapp getting called up from the Fire and I won't be surprised with Bornstein & Kljestan getting called up from Chivas either. MLS seems to call the shots and they are the only 2 teams without games on Saturday or Sunday. Its unfortunate because there are players more deserving of a shot.
Posted by: KC | June 18, 2008 at 02:14 PM
Please god no more EJ! Call up Orozco and Altidore!
Posted by: Tris | June 18, 2008 at 02:14 PM
I suggest Jorge Flores also. I will keep calling for Quintin Westberg until he gets a call into camp and Cervi doesn't.

Don't we know what Johnson can do? Why is it the USMNT's responcibility to prop up his confidence? That's Fulham's job.
I'd rather see Buddle and Quaranta in the mix. They both deserve a look from the National team again.
