Wow. What a beatdown so far.

I am supporting Argentina and even I feel bad for Mexico
Posted by: Cindy | June 04, 2008 at 11:43 PM
Wow. 3-0 to Argentina and they are only in the 32nd minute.
Posted by: RS | June 04, 2008 at 11:44 PM
Hey guys, I just turned the game on. No score on the screen so I don't know what the score is right now.
Funny thing is I was at the last meeting between these teams, Argentina's World Cup win against Mexico in the Round of 16. Maxi Rodriguez's insane goal won it. Great game.
Posted by: Ives | June 04, 2008 at 11:45 PM
Of course I miss the three goals and now Argentina is just going to knock it around.
There goes Messi dancing around.
And whose idea was the field board seeting? Is this Arena football?
Posted by: Ives | June 04, 2008 at 11:47 PM
If Argentina are going to play this well on Sunday, the US might as well not even show up. I haven't seen a ton of Mexico's games, but I've never seen anyone make them look this bad. Think Sven is having second thoughts?
Posted by: A.S. | June 04, 2008 at 11:48 PM
Messi nearly breaks someone's leg with a tackle. I think U.S. Soccer is praying Messi doesn't get hurt before Sunday's match. I wonder how long he plays in this one.
Posted by: Ives | June 04, 2008 at 11:50 PM
I almost want them(Mexico) to get at least one goal in. Just to please the home crowd. Messi and Aguero connect really well
Posted by: Cindy | June 04, 2008 at 11:51 PM
He prolly wont play the second half much... Is it unlimited subs?
Posted by: Cindy | June 04, 2008 at 11:52 PM
What channel is this on?
Posted by: JustinR | June 04, 2008 at 11:53 PM
After watching the Champions League Final in that beautiful HD feed, it really sucks having to go back to blurry crap.
Posted by: RS | June 04, 2008 at 11:53 PM
games pretty much over
mexico were playing good too when it was 0-0
they just got blitzed
Posted by: combo breaker karma | June 04, 2008 at 11:55 PM
Game is on Telemundo, 47. It's almost halftime.
Posted by: Ives | June 04, 2008 at 11:56 PM
You might want to tune in for the halftime replays of the goals.
The crazy-eyed Canadian ref I like to call "The Serial Killer" is the referee.
Posted by: Ives | June 04, 2008 at 11:58 PM
Halftime, Argentina 3, Mexico 0.
Posted by: Ives | June 04, 2008 at 11:59 PM
I really dislike the ref that is doing this game. Every time we have him, I feel like I'm watching a MLS ref.
Posted by: dano | June 05, 2008 at 12:00 AM
sucio!
Posted by: sucio | June 05, 2008 at 12:02 AM
Am I the only person who thinks that the half time interviews with the players ...especially if they are losing is harsh?
And is it unlimited substitutions?
Posted by: Cindy | June 05, 2008 at 12:02 AM
Dano, I'm pretty sure he's done an MLS game or two as part of the ref exchange program, probably a Toronto FC game or two.
Posted by: Ives | June 05, 2008 at 12:03 AM
wow...should we be scared for the usa come sunday????
Posted by: kriz | June 05, 2008 at 12:03 AM
eee. Explains alot.
Posted by: dano | June 05, 2008 at 12:06 AM
The only Argentina player I don't really see anything from is Cruz. Of course, they have some guy from ManU who can fill in at that position.
Beside Tevez, the team is missing Cambiasso, Riquelme, Saviola... yikes.
Posted by: A.S. | June 05, 2008 at 12:07 AM
I'm definitely scared of the Messi-Aguero combo up front. Our defense should be too.
How is it that Argentina seems to pump out these players like Messi, Tevez, and Aguero?
Short, low center of gravity, strong, quick, ball always seems to stick to feet, etc.
Unless those guys are injured or burn out, Argentina should be a lot of fun to watch in 2010.
Posted by: BJR | June 05, 2008 at 12:11 AM
this is crazy. I've been laughing for the past 5 mins because it's hard to believe. well, not really, this is argentina after all but our defense has played horrible so far.
messi + aguero are going to be DEADLY.
i've gotta find a paper bag to put over my head for the next year.
Posted by: Christian | June 05, 2008 at 12:12 AM
Now I see why Mexico climbed 3 spots in the FIFA rankings!
Posted by: Jeffrey | June 05, 2008 at 12:14 AM
1st goal- Free kick from deep floated in, failed clearance falls to Burdisso, who buries the volley from about eight yards out.
2nd goal- Filthy goal. Messi to Maxi, Maxi to Cruz left side of area, Cruz centers the ball, Aguero with a beautiful dummy to a wide-open Messi, who taps it home from near the penalty spot. Lovely sequence, Aguero just knew Messi would be there so he let the pass go right by him.
3rd goal- Messi starts the play again. dribbles into the ride side of the area, races past about four Mexico defenders before serving a ball in front of goal. A failed clearance pops in the air, where Maxi pounces to bury it for the 3-0 lead.
Posted by: Ives | June 05, 2008 at 12:18 AM
American fans will be made happier by the fact that Oswaldo Sanchez is in net this game.
Posted by: Ives | June 05, 2008 at 12:19 AM
Messi just has another gear that nobody else on the field has. And yes, he's still playing.
Posted by: Ives | June 05, 2008 at 12:22 AM
Too bad Messi's tackle wasn't on Sanchez...
That was a while ago now, but a little indirect revenge would be satisfying.
Posted by: BJR | June 05, 2008 at 12:23 AM
53rd minute- Wow, Cruz just missed a sitter set up by Aguero after a bad Mexico turnover.
Posted by: Ives | June 05, 2008 at 12:24 AM
Who is Mexico's left back....that was dumb. Should be 4-0
Posted by: John | June 05, 2008 at 12:25 AM
It should be noted that several young players aren't on the field for Mexico, including Rafael Marquez, Pavel Pardo, Jorge Salcido and Adolfo Bautista.
Posted by: Ives | June 05, 2008 at 12:25 AM
I haven't seen Omar Bravo either.
Posted by: Ives | June 05, 2008 at 12:26 AM
My bad, Osorio and Salcido are both there.
Posted by: Ives | June 05, 2008 at 12:26 AM
Also not playing tonight is Giovani Dos Santos, at least I haven't seen him. He might be in England completing his move to Tottenham from Barcelona.
Posted by: Ives | June 05, 2008 at 12:27 AM
On the other side no Cambiasso, Riquelme, Tevez, or Crespo
Posted by: John | June 05, 2008 at 12:28 AM
Dos Santos had ankle surgery last month, which might explain his absence.
Posted by: Ives | June 05, 2008 at 12:29 AM
Yes John, but who has depth like Argentina? Even Brazil doesn't these days.
Posted by: Ives | June 05, 2008 at 12:29 AM
You may have answered this before, but what do you think about Dos Santos Ives?
Posted by: John | June 05, 2008 at 12:30 AM
Messi just got fouled hard by Salcido. He looks to be okay. Not a good tackle at all.
Posted by: Ives | June 05, 2008 at 12:30 AM
62nd minute- Goal Mexico. It's Zinha, curling chip from just outside the area. It was a nice shot that left the goalkeeper flat-footed.
As soon as a Mexican scores I'll let you know.
Posted by: Ives | June 05, 2008 at 12:33 AM
Well that was vaguely similar to Ronaldinho's dancing chip against Chelski...except opposite corner
Posted by: John | June 05, 2008 at 12:33 AM
Not for nothing but on the replay it almost looks like Argentina goalkeeper Roberto Abbondenzerri let that one go in.
Posted by: Ives | June 05, 2008 at 12:34 AM
Now it's Torrado with the hard foul on Messi. Does Alfio Basile know Messi has to be healthy for Sunday's game vs. the USA? Maybe not.
Posted by: Ives | June 05, 2008 at 12:34 AM
It was raining out here today. I know it shocked us too....maybe the grass was too wet.
Posted by: John | June 05, 2008 at 12:35 AM
He's under orders from Barcelona to get him injured before the olympics roll around
Posted by: John | June 05, 2008 at 12:36 AM
I'd like to think that Howard or GUzan would have made that save. Shot seemed a little slow..
Posted by: BJR | June 05, 2008 at 12:36 AM
67th minute- Jared "Sven Who?" Borgetti comes into the match.
Posted by: Ives | June 05, 2008 at 12:37 AM
Argentina is toying with Mexico right now.
Posted by: Ives | June 05, 2008 at 12:38 AM
WTF? They are throwing things on the pitch now
Posted by: Cindy | June 05, 2008 at 12:41 AM
What a bunch of classless pendejos behind the Arg goal.
Posted by: BJR | June 05, 2008 at 12:41 AM
71st- GOAL ARGENTINA. Sergio Aguero from who else? Yes, Lionel Messi. I swear those two are on a different wave-length.
Posted by: Ives | June 05, 2008 at 12:41 AM
Argentina 4, Mexico 1. They just showed Sven Goran Eriksson and he looks a little nervous. Luckily for him Belize has a little less talent than Argentina.
Posted by: Ives | June 05, 2008 at 12:42 AM
GOL...Aguero...4-1 wow
Posted by: Nando | June 05, 2008 at 12:43 AM
I thought I read he doesn't take over until after the Belieze home and home.
Posted by: John | June 05, 2008 at 12:44 AM
I'm not sure what makes me happier, watching the US actually win a game, or Mexico get absolutely worked over?
Maybe the latter. Especially when their fans are throwing crap on the field.
Posted by: BJR | June 05, 2008 at 12:45 AM
Would those be the same classless pendejos that shout asshole everytime there is a goal kick.....hmmm clever.
Posted by: John | June 05, 2008 at 12:46 AM
Yes John, but Mexico still has to beat Belize. I know, foregone conclusion, just saying.
Posted by: Ives | June 05, 2008 at 12:47 AM
Gago comes out and in comes Ever Banega. I tell you, Argentina is filthy rich with talent.
Posted by: Ives | June 05, 2008 at 12:49 AM
These Mexican players are likable (save for Dirty Sanchez)...it may be fun to watch free flowing goal scoring, but I wish no harm to these guys.
Posted by: John | June 05, 2008 at 12:49 AM
Ives, their last meeting was at Copa America 2007, not the 2006 World Cup.
Posted by: CACuzcatlan | June 05, 2008 at 12:52 AM
85th minute- Messi finally comes out, as does Aguero. Both are healthy and we'll see if they'll have something left for the USA game (something tells me they will).
Posted by: Ives | June 05, 2008 at 12:55 AM
Argentina is filthy rich in hot chicks too.
Posted by: John | June 05, 2008 at 12:55 AM
I don't really wish any of their players harm either, with the exception of Sanchez and Borgetti. But that is from years of a dirty rivalry.
I'm actually kind of excited about the thought of Donovan joining Bravo and Guardado in Spain (but I rather see him play with Altidore).
Posted by: BJR | June 05, 2008 at 12:57 AM
Ah, thanks for reminding me CACuzcatlan. How could I forget that thrashing.
Posted by: Ives | June 05, 2008 at 12:57 AM
And it's a final. Argentina 4, Mexico 1. Beautiful stuff from Argentina. Not as much from the Mexicans.
Posted by: Ives | June 05, 2008 at 01:06 AM
yea, john is rite, argentinas chicks are hawt.
if you dont believe me, images.google search "Rocio Guirao Diaz"
OW! or as ives would say, "jeez"
Posted by: combo breaker karma | June 05, 2008 at 01:54 AM
Very jealous, not televised down south here. BTW, was Sven on the sidelines coaching, or just observing?
Well, we want to play #1 in the world, here they come!
Posted by: eric | June 05, 2008 at 02:23 AM
I was there. Argentina where a step ahead of Mexico. quick one touch passing at its finest. At the beginning Mexico held their own, well for about 10 minutes but once Argentina got rhythm going they controlled the game. A fun match with 68 thousand there.
Posted by: cconk | June 05, 2008 at 04:06 AM
I don't understand why they played this game in San Diego? Isn't Mexico a large country with a lot of soccer stadiums?
Posted by: bob | June 05, 2008 at 04:29 AM
Bob, really? You have to ask this question? It's the same reason all the US vs Mexico games are played here. Higher ticket prices.
Kinda like the same reason Brazil hardly plays in Brazil anymore. $$$
Posted by: Alejandro Ruiz | June 05, 2008 at 05:56 AM
Sorry Alejandro -- now I am really confused with your answer. I just wondered why they would play in San Diego where they only got 60,000 fans while they could play in Mexico where they could probably get 100,000 plus fans. Even with lower ticket prices, couldn't they make as much $$$ this way?
Who gets the money from the ticket sales? The Mexican Federation?
The Argentinian Federation? The USSF?
And does Brazil play a bunch of their friendlies in Argentina because of $$$?
Sorry for all the questions!!! I was actually cheering for the tricolores last night, but just wondered about the logistics of it all from a financial perspective.
Posted by: bob | June 05, 2008 at 07:29 AM
Wow this game was terrible for mexico. They started well and Carlos Vela almost scored during the first few minutes. But then it went south from their for Mexico. I don't mind the mexican team but can't really stand Sanchez. Not sure why Mexico didn't have Ochoa on goal instead of Sanchez.
Was Sven writing notes down or was he drawing on paper because this game was over by the 30th min in the first half.
Posted by: Sandro | June 05, 2008 at 09:06 AM
well folks, bob bradley's "9 mend behind the ball" defensive strategy doesn't seem that bad now after Chucho Ramirez was exposed last nite. he also got a clinic on coaching at the highest level by Alfio Basile.
it's a dilemma Mexico faces when it plays Argentina, we always want to play them straight up and stick to our possesion style but they're just so much more better than us, I don't think anyone other than brazil, germany, spain, portugal, italy, or france can go toe to toe against them.
I seriously almost enjoyed watching argentina pound us last nite. beautiful stuff from messi and aguero.
for sunday's game, bob needs to play with 6 defenders and 5 mifielders just to keep the score respectable.
ugh
