what I don’t get is the definition of world class?

If you score 25 goals in 1 season is that world class? Is it more or less world class if it’s a Real Madrid or Fulham FC? If you score that many goals at your club but play horribly at the world cup or euros, are you still world class?

I mean look at Diego Costa. Dude had 1 great season and supposedly he’s a world class striker. Based on 1 damn season. He flopped for Spain at the WC and yet still made a huge $$$ move to Chelsea. My point is honestly for me to be world class you need to perform at a high level for multiple years. You can’t just have 1 great season or 2 and get that label unless you score say 35 goals in 20 matches and 8 goals at the WC and win the trophy.

I am not sure what prompted your rant, I do not see anyone called world class in the above post, but here goes anyway….

You are world-class if you are playing at that level right now. World-class is all about where you can play — so yes, it matters more if you play at Madrid than Fulham, and it would be hard (but not impossible) to argue that you are playing world-class soccer with the Sounders or Red Bulls.

As for Diego Costa, what is world class at the moment is the management that collected that much money from Chelsea for a player with only one world-class season under his belt.

      • Atletico Man says:

Also, there is this “scoring one or two goals every game” thing he keeps doing in the preseason…

        • alexader skarsgaard says:

          anyone can score in pre-season.

to me the 5 best strikers of the past 2-3 years

          Suarez, Ibra, Lewandowski, Falcao, RVP

      • GW says:

In soccer generally the big money moves, like Costa’s are done for what they think a player will do for you, not what he has done for someone else.

So the fact that Costa has only done it for one season makes Mourinho think he’s seen enough he’ll take him now.

In theory this is a better move than the one they made for Torres who might have been proven long term world class when they bought him but soon lost his edge afterwards. In that case they paid him for what he had done for someone else.

It is a tricky move but Mourinho is a pretty well proven judge of what players will play well for his team,
