In the face of all of the pressure that comes with taking on your fiercest rival, Obafemi Martins decided to just dribble right around.

The Seattle Sounders forward scored a pair of goals and picked up an assist in Sunday’s 4-2 victory over the Portland Timbers, with the Nigerian’s second finish coming of the spectacular variety.

With the Timbers defense bearing down on him, Martins dribbled into and around those marking him starting on the left side. Martins’ run saw him weave around five separate Timbers defenders before emerging all alone in the center of the box to lift the ball over goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts the Sounder’s fourth and final goal.

Martins’ performance was perhaps his best in a Sounders shirt, earning the forward recognition as SBI MLS Player of the Week. Martins beat out a stacked list of candidates, including Thierry Henry, Andrew Wenger, Fabian Castillo and Justin Meram.

What did you think of Martins’ performance in the victory over the Timbers? Who stood out to you in MLS Week 24?

Wish i knew Oba’s leg workout

  2. Del Griffin says:

That was a wicked goal. He is a stud.

  3. Creige says:

Letoux with a goal and 3 assists is more deserving. Obafemi for MVP though.

  4. iggy says:

Oba was absolutely fantastic. the level of effort and skill this guy brings is phenomenal.

His second goal, and Dempsey’s are the perfect goals to show to young players to teach them how effort can pay off.

    • Diego's Maradoughnuts says:

+1 Count me among those who worriedt Martins would be a checked-out MLS disappointment. By contrast, he is super engaged and playing at his highest level in memory.

  5. Bryan says:

Lots of good performances this week, but I’m surprised Le Toux wasn’t at least mentioned considering he had 3 assists + a goal.

    • Broadsthooligans says:

Le Toux wasn’t mentioned largely because of how much of a force We get mad himself in that game. Seba put in some very good balls, especially the pass to Wenger on the first goal, but Wengers athleticism is really what pushed the Union to that win. Danny Cruz started for much too long for this club because they wanted a pact strong wing player to open up for their multiple creative central attackers. Wenger and Seba, if they can play like they did against SJ can spread any defense in the league.

Martins was good -goal of the week
Le Toux also had good showing
Henry carried the Red Bulls team , should be player of the week
