The CONCACAF Champions League group phase kicks off in August, where 24 teams representing 11 countries are set to participate in the top-level competition. Defending champion Cruz Azul will debut in the first week, along with two-time defending Liga MX champion Club León.

Major League Soccer clubs will enter the fray in the second week with the Portland Timbers, Sporting Kansas City, Montreal Impact and D.C. United all taking the field. MLS fans will take notice of Sept. 17 and Oct. 22, when the New York Red Bulls face off twice against the Montreal Impact, 2014 Canadian Championship winner.

The top club from each of the eight three-team groups will advance to the knockout stage. The quarterfinal, semifinal and final rounds are slated for early next year.

  1. El Comandante says:

Unles MLS teams can compete in this Cup, MLS will only a third division league.

    • Nico C. says:

Uh, they do compete in this Cup, hence the (USA) teams.

    • slowleftarm says:

That day is coming, then Liga MX teams won’t get a sniff.

      • LeaveAReplyMof@ says:

wish ESPN could get a sniff of some dough from this tournament. I don’t ever see that happening. No one’s turning in for that.

    • Tom says:

They consistently outperform everyone but LigaMX. So maybe 2nd rate would be more reasonable.

    • LeaveAReplyMof@ says:

Given the performance of the Costa Ricans on the international stage, I think their league should be given 2 spots in the group stage. Also, since NASL has teams from several countries perhaps they shouldnt be considered a domestic league. They should be in the mix for some of these slots too.

  2. PD says:

It will be interesting to see any kind of boost Sporting KC gets from Besler and Zusi’s recent experience in Brazil. I imagine this schedule will feel like a walk in the park to them now. Too bad Seattle isn’t in it as well.

  3. Joe Public F.C. says:

How can you call this a tournament without me? Now I know how Zlatan feels.

    • Supa says:

Well first you have to join the 1st division in Trinidad, and then we will see……

    • LeaveAReplyMof@ says:

Defense Force should petition to play in Costa Rican league. Ditto for top two team in Panama, which is essentially still a baseball country.

  4. Jacknut says:

Is it just me or is DC’s group the weakest of the bunch?
