Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

Joe Corona may not have helped Club Tijuana avoid a second straight defeat to start the season, but he likely helped his cause for more starts with a strong performance.

Corona helped set up a penalty kick for Tijuana that marked the opener in their visit to Club America on Saturday, but Xolos conceded twice in the second half en route to a 2-1 loss that dropped them to 0-2 in the Apertura campaign. Corona started his first game of the season in the match at Estadio Azteca, hit a pass that helped set up a 20th-minute penalty kick, and lasted 77 minutes for a Tijuana team that surprisingly sits in 16th place in the Liga MX table after two weeks.

Conor O’Brien also made his first start of the season for Odense BK on Friday, but they were handed a 3-1 defeat by FC Vestsjaelland. O’Brien went the distance in the forgettable road game that saw Odense fall to last place in the Superligaen.

There were some bad performances mixed in with the more notable ones for the Americans Abroad contingent this weekend. Gabriel Fafan’s substitute showing for Jaguares de Chiapas saw him score an own goal in a 2-1 victory over Toluca on Saturday. Sacha Kljestan was limited to just seven minutes off the bench in RSC Anderlecht’s season-opening 3-1 win over recently-promoted Royal Mouscron-Peruwelz on Sunday.

Here is how the Americans Abroad performed this weekend:

What do you think of these performances? Impressed with Corona’s showing for Xolos? Surprised to see Kljestan only get seven minutes?

Bornstein’s played 12 games since 2011. Crazy he started for the US twice at the 2010 World Cup.

    • Lorenzo says:

Can’t he just run the border already!

      • Deigo's Maradoughnuts says:

+1…. There has got to be some other story, hasn’t there? What an epic price to pay for one performance, terrible though it was. The Bornstein story is appoaching 30 for 30 territory

    • danny says:

Crazy! Since he actually played well during the World Cup! Just because all the commentors say how horrible he was always for the US NATS, doesn’t make it true.

  2. bryan says:

noooooo, Boyd may have tore his ACL against QPR!

“One of the first diagnosis, according to Boyd could have touched the cruciate ligament. Just to the knee specialist Ulrich Boenisch find out on Monday in Augsburg.” (Google translate)

    • Increase0 says:

Oh, that’s not cool. Bundesliga 2 is like… a halfway decent league. Better than Austria for sure. I was hoping he would do well.

    • Josh D says:

I saw that. Also noticed that Williams hurt his knee again and is going back under the knife.

Boyd seemed like he was going to have a breakout season. Let’s hope it’s not as bad as feared.

Listened to an interview a few months back on SiriusXM… The dude is living the dream (Bornstein). As a professional, I imagine he wants to play every week, but he’s making good money in Mexico, living on the beach, basically a permanent vacation.

    • Making me feel like I've never been Born(stein) says:

I strongly doubt he wants to play every week as a professional or he would Three years in the penalty box just tell me he is lazy and defeated. Or he joined the Zetas.

    • quozzel says:

Does seem strange that they would pay a gringo good money just to sit on the bench – and often, not even dress – for years. If you’re not getting anything outta the guy, why have him? More importantly, why IMPORT a guy who isn’t helping you?

Doesn’t make much sense to me on Queratero’s part, but hey. I guess it’s great work if you can get it if you’re Bornstein.

On the Yanks Abroad preseason front:

    – Shea played 45 minutes as a right winger for Stoke
    – Bobby Wood SCORED
    – Shawn Parker SCORED

    – Zelalem played 45
    – Pelosi made his comeback
    – Stanko didn’t play
    – Agudelo is still in no man’s land
    – Friedel managed 90
    – Our World Cup boys are still on vacation/just getting back into training
    – Holmes went unused

Saw the first half of the Tijuana-Club America and it was good to see Joe Corona not only play but generate a couple of fantastic scoring chances. He created some space and unleashed a hard shot from well outside the box that just went wide by inches, and then he got behind the defense, staying onside on a long ball and was pulled down just outside the box.
