Uruguay joins Costa Rica in the knockout stage from Group D, as the South Americans eliminated Italy from the World Cup thanks to a spectacular header from Diego Godín.

Godín scored a goal in the UEFA Champions League Final and scored the goal that won La Liga for Atlético Madrid. The captain of La Celeste can now add the winning goal against Italy to that list of accolades, as well as the SBI Man of the Match award for Tuesday’s victory.

One minute after a controversial incident between Luis Suarez and Giorgio Chiellini took place, the 28-year-old fired in the lone goal of the match on a corner kick delivery from Gastón Ramírez, again using that powerful head that he used to register eight goals for Atlético this year.

Godín wins the Man of the Match award over Ramírez and Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

What did you think of Godín’s performance? Did someone else deserve the Man of the Match award?

So Suarez has to be banned at least for the rest of the tournament, right? Surely FIFA can’t hide behind the “ref didn’t see it” nonsense?

    • Mr_A says:

I think they’re circulating a petition for a direct democracy in China, too. I’m crossing my fingers on both counts.

    • Mason says:

Ref didn’t see it works for the game, but not for additional discipline. You can’t call things you didn’t see, but you can write them down in your report and suggest that authorities check with the eye in the sky.

  2. HoboMike says:

So should Godin retire right now? What a year for him.

    • Hogatroge says:

It will be overshadowed by the Suarez bite, but Godin should have been sent off against England anyway (meaning he also would have missed this match).

  3. Ian says:

In addition to being banned, Suarez needs a psych evaluation. Homie has issues.

well deserved award. too bad all anyone will remember is Suarez
