Soccer Saturday: Your Running Commentary

The last major Soccer Saturday of the 2013-14 European league calendar should be one to remember with a La Liga title decider on the same day as a pair of domestic cup finals.

Atletico Madrid need a win or a draw Saturday at Camp Nou, home of defending champions Barcelona. Lionel Messi, Neymar and the rest of Barcelona’s high-caliber squad can repeat as title holders and grab the trophy with their 17th home win of the season. On the other side, Diego Costa, David Villa and Atletico Madrid can be the first team outside of the El Clasico duopoly to win the Spanish top division title in a decade, and they will be looking to keep their dreams of a historic double alive.

In England, Arsenal are hoping to end their nine-year trophy drought at Wembley Stadium, where they will face Hull City in the FA Cup Final. The Gunners are in good form at the finish line of their season, defeating Hull City in both of their meetings this season while getting several players back from long-term injuries. The Tigers from Hull, on the other hand, lost four of their last five matches and will be heavy underdogs ahead of what they hope will be their first FA Cup title win.

While Bayern Munich cannot secure a treble again this season, they will go for a domestic double when they face Borussia Dortmund in the DFB-Pokal Final. The Bundesliga champions are favorites to repeat at German Cup champions, but they lost to Dortmund 3-0 at home earlier this season and dropped the Super Cup title to their biggest rivals to open the 2013-14 campaign.

you got me! You made me believe that the Real Madrid game was on BEINsports spanish channel. It’s not and comcast doesn’t offer bein sports play to watch it. I hate how comcast doesn’t offer BEIN sports play and you have to buy 2 seperate packages to get both BEIN channels.

  2. Ted says:

If I was playing a drinking game based on how many times Fox mentions Arsenal ‘s trophy drought, I’d be hammered by now

  3. Bac says:

For those who thought Arsenal would have a walk in the park…

  4. Brant says:

If you want to rob a bank in England today, go to Hull. No one’s paying any attention to anything but the FA Cup and it looks like 2/3 of the city is in Wembley, anyway.

  5. Brant says:

That was a helluva shot by Cazorla.

  6. argh says:

gotta admire when smaller clubs HAMMER the giants.

when was the last time Arsenal was actually a REAL CLUB?

was it 06 when they reached the CL final?

they have been in the CL for like 16 years straight okay. they challenged for the title but are always lucky to reach 3rd or 4th.

  7. Pete says:

    Diego Costa off injured

  8. NATO says:

    Barca or Athletico?

Barca is AMAZING to watch and had highs n lows of this season.
At the same time Atletico is an underdog and I do enjoy watching someone other than Barca and Real win the league. been 10 years since Valencia won it.

  9. ace frehley says:

So…Gus Johnson said Hull City just changed their mascot to a tiger at insistance of their owner, lol. Close up of fans with tiger make up, and he says, “It’s nice to see the fans finally buying in.” Clueless moron.

    • Increase says:

Lol, lordy. Btw I find that whole thing dumb. They are nick bamed the Tigers… how is it that big a deal to just formally make the the tigers.

Gus needs to pay attention though… still a dumb comment by him.

      • ace frehley says:

I’m with the opposing fans on that one. Hull Tigers sounds corny and the reasoning that “it will make them a global brand” is ridiculous. Did Man U have to change to Manchester Red Devils to become a global brand? No, they accomplished that by um, WINNING.

Allam also said that, if he owned Man City, he would rebrand them as “Manchester Hunter”, lol. Seriously, the dude should be buying American Arena Football franchises instead…

        • Increase says:

Oh its silly and childish. Im just saying ita not some horrible injustice. The British media act like its some act of spit and evil.

  10. Pete says:

Ray Hudson is a pathetic commentator, openly rooting for Barcelona.

  11. Pete says:

    Wow what a goal

  12. Bac says:

    Holy crap

  13. beachbum says:

    yowza

  14. reignman says:

This ref is a joke. He’s been allowing Hull to waste time since the 10th minute with not so much as a warning. He has yet to give out a yellow and there have been numerous tackles warranting one. Also the foul he called when Fryatt was through was beyond soft.

  15. Captain Obvious says:

Come Atletico don’t pull a liverpool

  16. Nick4235 says:

    Stu!

  17. Will Smith says:

I was lulled into almost rooting for the overdog. Then those wimps from North London gave up two goals in a nanosecond.

    C’mon Hull.

And C’mon Atletico. . . but at least if you lose it was to a great goal.

  18. Bac says:

Bullet Tooth Tony and his Desert Eagle .50 looks too menacing for the Fox halftime set…
    Awesome…

  19. Bach's Thumb says:

I logged on simply to post that Alexis Sanchez hit that so hard I didn’t even see it go in.

  20. reignman says:

Wynalda and Johnson seem to have no idea why the fans are clapping for the 56th minute, pathetic from them

  21. reignman says:

Huddlestone just clubbed Giruod in the box and no penalty is given, this ref is a complete joke.

  22. Bach's Thumb says:

Wynalda is a freaking terrible commentator. TERRIBLE.

And that was a stone cold penalty.

  23. Ralph says:

Giroud was just donkey punched in the throat–on purpose–and nothing was given. This referee is a clown.

  24. Gerard D. says:

Whoever assigned Wynalda to this game–F you.

  25. Bach's Thumb says:

Eric Wynalda is a top 10 trending topic in the United States on Twitter.

THAT IS HOW BAD THIS IS.

    • bryan says:

i’ll never forget when they showed Khedira on Madrid’s bench during the game at Bayern and he referred to Khedira as a former Bayern Munich player. dude is an !d!0t.

  26. reignman says:

And there is another clear penalty denied to Arsenal, Livermore with a very obvious handball in the box

  27. Lu says:

Ronaldo out for a week and Diego Costa out for 2 weeks

  28. Bach's Thumb says:

And an Arsenal cross is PUNCHED OUT OF BOUNDS. And nothing is called.

Seriously, this is fixed? What the hell.

  29. Pete says:

If Hull had any honor they would score two own goals, and let Arsenal win.

  30. Ralph says:

That ball was just punched out of bounds in the box and nothing was called. Why even have referees if they’re not going to call a single thing?

In the last 10 minutes Hull has clubbed someone in the neck–intentionally–and punched the ball out Thierry Henry style and neither resulted in even a foul let alone the penalty it should have been.

  31. Herman munster says:

Arsenal fans, it’s always someone else’s fault

    • reignman says:

There have been 3 clear penalties and not a single has been given, its easy to feel angry about that

  32. Ralph says:

    WTF

    WTF

    WTF

    THIS IS FIXED

  33. reignman says:

And yet another clear penalty is denied to Arsenal, this ref may not be just incompetent.

  34. Pete says:

It has to be fixed….Hull are such a rich club, that it would be easy for them to buy off everybody.

  35. Bach's Thumb says:

Okay, this is f***** silly. That’s the third no argument penalty in 15 minutes.

There’s no way a professional referee is this incompetent. No way.

  36. Mike Gardino says:

There’s zero chance a referee assigned to this type of match could possibly miss that many obvious calls consecutively.

  37. reignman says:

Koscielny with a huge goal there and his ankle looks like it could be in trouble, fallen on, wow.

  38. Pete says:

Should have been a red against Arsenal.

  39. Pete says:

    Gibbs….wow

  40. reignman says:

Gibbs just missed a massive chance, should be 3-2

  41. reignman says:

And a 4th clear penalty has been denied to Arsenal, wowowowow

  42. Brian S. says:

Atleti 15 minutes from the title!

  43. Mike Gardino says:

    Okay, 4.

That is FOUR blatant penalties not given.

    • ace frehley says:

      Nah, it’s fine.

    • jefpal says:

As a neutral, I’d say two missed penalty calls: the Giroud shout is debatable, he’s pulling the defender’s arm before the foul. The last Cazorla shout, he goes down a little too easily. The handball was very clear though and the other takedown as well.

That having been said, the corner leading to the equalizer should’ve been a goal kick.

  44. Alex Song says:

I want an investigation into Lee Probert. This isn’t legitimate.

  45. ace frehley says:

Lol at all Wynalda’s diving tips…

  46. Liken says:

Wonder how much money Lee Probert was given. Not kidding.

  47. reignman says:

In spite of the clearly biased officiating Arsenal should have finished this thing off already, hopefully they don’t end up regretting the missed chances, particularly the Gibbs one

  48. Pete says:

Classy from the Barcelona fans applauding Atletico Madrid’s title.

  49. Brian S. says:

We have new La Liga Champions!

  50. NATO says:

    about time man.
    finally

  51. Mo says:

A lot of whiny Arsenal fans on here – they ignore the fact that their equalizer came from an incorrectly awarded corner

    • Pete says:

As much as I like messing with them, they do have a point. Should have gotten at least one of the penalties called.

    • Bach's Thumb says:

You think only Arsenal fans think this is pathetic?

There is zero legitimacy in this match at this point. No rules have been followed.

    • reignman says:

4 penalty decisions > 1 corner kick decision. get real

  52. LZT says:

arsenal drop wenger. come on guys. get someone else

10 years of just Madrid/Barca. Finally we done.

and Real Madrid finished 3rd place LOL

  53. AMP says:

    Congrats to Athletico!

  54. Pete says:

Bayern v Dortmund about to begin. Good times.

  55. Bach's Thumb says:

If this goes to penalties, is Probert going to allow Arsenal to take there’s or will only Hull get to hit from the spot?

  56. Matt says:

    Leti! Leti! Leti!

  57. Joe says:

Tack another 30+ on the season totals of Ozil and Per.

  58. reignman says:

    The crossbar denies Giroud, nooooo

  59. Pete says:

    Probert lowered the bar

  60. Will Smith says:

“Remarkable scenes inside the Nou Camp as almost 100,000 Barca supporters, plus around 500 Atletico fans, rise to their fight to salute Diego Simeone and his men.” (BBC)

    Class.

Want to bet that the Arsenal fans will be this classy if little old Hull wins?

  61. reignman says:

Wenger needs to use his 2 subs soon, Ramsey is clearly gassed.

  62. reignman says:

The amount of Hull City fans with facepaint on is disturbing, grown adults doing that, beyond weird

  63. reignman says:

Wynalda just said that Ramsey is English, oh my he is beyond awful

    • Pete says:

Why comment about that, your team just scored!

      • Bach's Thumb says:

        Because he’s not English.

That’d be like saying Landon Donovan is Mexican.

        • Pete says:

Yeah I know. But it was an odd comment Arsenal just scored a huge goal. Just goes to show most comments are complaints about one thing or the other and not about winning goals.

        • Dozy says:

well, Donovan kinda looks mexican, he just needs to change his name to something like Lamberto Dolores

  64. Pete says:

This board is funny, a goal is scored in extra time and crickets. But everybody freaks out if a call is missed

  65. jefpal says:

    Hoping for one more twist!

  66. Mo says:

I suppose we’re stuck with sour-mug Wenger for another 10 years.

  67. Pete says:

Lahm picked up a foot injury in German Cup final. Might be a break of some kind.

  68. reignman says:

Dortmund got robbed in the final, ball was over the line but not given and then went on to lose in ET

  69. AMP says:

Class. Jermain Defoe getting started early. 1 – 0 TFC, in the 12th min. GK had position, Defoe simply rocketed it upper 90, nearside corner.

    • AMP says:

Might not have been upper 90, even in replay the ball’s a blur. TFC is looking sharp 20 minutes in, but I don’t think they’ll run away with it. It’s been a good, open game.

  70. Atletico Man says:

    :-D

  71. Nic D "The TX 2 Stepper" says:

Yo Ives, why am I waiting moderation? I only said what anyone who has ever heard Shep Messing speak before has thought.

  72. reignman says:

Martins just scored a crazy opening goal in the Seattle vs SJ game, wow

  73. soundersdude says:

Sounders fan playing devils advocate…. possible that wasnt his intention?

    • Nic D "the TX 2 Stepper" says:

He hit it and looked it in the whole way. Methinks it was intentional.

      • KingGoogleyEye says:

Intentional…but still very lucky. (That’s not meant to take anything away from Oba. Lots of goals rely on luck.)

  74. divers suck says:

Arlo White in town to announce the 2nd half of Seattle v SJ with Kasey Keller….Nice!
