Late Manneh goal gives Whitecaps 2-2 draw with Galaxy

Just one week after scoring a game-winner against the Vancouver Whitecaps, it looked like Robbie Keane could repeat the feat once again — but alas, his Los Angeles Galaxy had to settle for a 2-2 draw Saturday in Vancouver.

With the score tied at one, Keane gave the Galaxy the lead in the 77th minute, giving Whitecaps supporters feelings of deja vu from last week’s matchup.

However, Kekuta Manneh ensured that the hosts would leave BC Place with a share of the points, as the Gambian forward struck from outside the box and forced the Galaxy to settle for a 2-2 draw.

It was Stefan Ishizaki who opened the scoring on the night for the Galaxy with a 38th minute header. The goal was a result of a Dan Gargan cross that found Baggio Husidic on the back post. Husidic headed it first time across the box to an open Ishizaki, whose powerful header found the lower right corner.

Darron Mattocks converted the host’s first equalizer of the day off of some lackluster Galaxy defending. Miscommunication between Leonardo and goalkeeper Jamie Peneda led to Mattocks pouncing on a loose ball to easily nod the game at one.

From there, it appeared Keane had added the winner late in the second half. A 77th minute cross from Omar Gonzalez found the head of substitute Rob Friend, who headed downwards into the path of the open Irishman. Keane slotted calmly, giving him his fourth goal on the year.

However, it was Manneh who played hero on the afternoon. The Whitecaps forward received the ball in the 86th minute just outside of the 18-yard box and struck a knuckling shot past Peneda and into the right side netting.

With the draw, the Whitecaps earn their 10th point of the season, while the Galaxy lurk slightly behind at nine with two games in hand. The Galaxy are now off until a May 3 clash with Colorado, while the Whitecaps head to Rio Tinto Stadium to take on Real Salt Lake next weekend.

Geez, giving up the lead twice hurts.

  2. AlexH says:

Man that Galaxy back line is a walking banana peel. Gargan is a time bomb with some redeeming qualities but Leonardo just sucks.

    • Petedela says:

Gargan is fine. Leonardo is a mess. Bad decision making on Sarvas’ part to lead to second goal. Donovan was MIA. Hard to win when one of your ‘leaders’ lets u down. Zardes off the bench was garbage. They should not have taken Ishizaki off. He’s become more of a leader than Donovan. But maybe the turf played a role. Keane remains a bright spot.

White Caps were horrible in first half. Looked like AYSO.

  3. Daniel says:

I saw that match on German TV. Thumbs up – it was pretty entertaining.

    Donovan was… bad.

  5. Quit whining about US soccer says:

I think LA is digging quite a hole for themselves out of the playoffs before the meat of the team leaves.
The team is NOT deep. At all.
They could be sitting in Aug needing everything to go right .

    • Fredo says:

I agree that Landon & Omar are the “meat” of the team. We’re gonna miss them. But, the season is long and I like the new guys Bruce has brought in.

  6. shasta says:

    Donovan got fat

  7. Harry S says:

no need to overreact. LA is 6th, behind the whitecaps with 2 games in hand. Getting a point in at BC palace is not a bad result. Yes Leonardo is not good enough and their depth at CB is not that great as i only trust Omar and Opare to play at a decent level. However if they could get a decent CB in the summer and good DP CB (Puyol maybe) to replace Omar, they could go deep in the playoffs, they have too much attacking talent not to. Remember that if you get hot at the right time, i.e. end of reg season, you have a good chance of winning it all.

    • Lil' Zeke says:

DelaGarza is a SWELL CB when Dunivant is healthy, and serves as a Linus-style security blanket for Omar

  8. Maizupath says:

Didn’t able to see this match. Just watched the match highlights of Galaxy vs Whitecaps. It was really an entertaining game.

  9. beachbum says:

this Galaxy team less dependent on Landon more than ever.

Leonardo has been a hot mess and continues to show a lack of quality that is required form his position. The sooner AJ pairs with Omar in the middle the better but losing Gonzo to the USMNT will hurt. Gonzo played well on Saturday
