SBI MLS Rookie of the Week: Harrison Shipp

MLS: Chicago Fire at Portland Timbers

By RYAN TOLMICH

The Chicago Fire were going to need a spark in order to have a chance of earning a result against defending MLS Supporters Shield winners New York Red Bulls on Sunday, and they received that spark from the team’s least experienced player.

Shipp helped set up the Fire’s only goal of the match, serving a perfect corner kick for Jeff Larentowicz to head home in an eventual 1-1 tie. That assist, and his overall effective play, helped earn Shipp SBI MLS Rookie of the Week honors.

Shipp beat out the Montreal Impact’s Eric Miller and Chivas USA’s Kris Tyrpak for this week’s honors.

What did you think of Shipp’s performance? Which rookie stood out to you in MLS Week Three?

His crosses are incredible…I know he’s supposed to be an offensive player….but with Churundolo retiring….

I didn’t watch the game and haven’t seen him play…I also would tap the breaks on any “cap him” talk after a couple good games. Does he do well defensively from his current position in midfield? Is he fast? He’s 6 years younger than Brad Evans so he certainly could switch.

      • Mike R says:

No anointing him a mar just yet cause he excells at crosses and nothing else stands out …BUT his crossed are Nat team worthy.
But u will be careful …Tim Ream is also a stud passing the ball as a defender….until they found out he couldn’t defend to save his life

    He is American, yes?

Notre Dame product. Have to say that the reigning national champs are churning out a lot of good players lately. Aside from Shipp, there’s Matt Besler, Justin Morrow, Dillon Powers, and Ryan Finley just in the last few years. I’m liking this trend. Go IRISH!

hey Ryan – did you watch the rest of the match, or just read the box scores and pick a rookie that showed up? He was subbed out of the match after being invisible with the exception of the corner kick…..

Hey adam – did you watch any of the match, or did you just log on here to pretend you did?

Fire fan, watched the game, he played well the last two weeks and glad he is named your rookie of the week BUT there seems to be some PR folks out there promoting this guy big time. Seems a little over the top. Friends? College mates? The Fire trying to get some Notre Dame folks in the seats? I’m concerned the Fire are promoting the young players in order to sell off Nyrako, Rolfe, etc. Overall the Fire have down sized this season and act like a couple ties are acceptable. Chicago already has one team of lovable losers and doesn’t need another.
