MLS Match Week 3 (SBI Live Commentary)

Real Salt Lake and the LA Galaxy have already faced each other this season, but the Western Conference powers have been lined up as opponents again this weekend in the marquee match-up of MLS Week Three.

Nick Rimando single-handedly saved RSL in the season-opening meeting, but Real Salt Lake should be a tougher team to deal with at Rio Tinto Stadium as they face a Galaxy side that is coming off a disappointing CONCACAF Champions League exit last Tuesday against Club Tijuana.

In Columbus, the Crew return from a bye and play host to the Philadelphia Union in a clash of teams off to impressive starts to the season. The Union’s revamped midfield has been one of the revelations of the early part of the season, but they could have their hands full against a tough Crew defense.

Great example of what Klinsmann meant. Guy does well to go past player on sideline. Defensive player stabs in and cleats down the Achilles / ankle of of the winger.

Not even a foul after hes so injured he can’t keep moving forward. Subbed off for injury.

    No foul.

  2. poli says:

Get shoved over from behind after a nice move? Handball on you for falling on the ball.

    Skilled players need not apply.

  3. Henry says:

    Herbalife vs LifeVantage
    Scam vs Scam.
    Mano a Mano.
    Awesome.

  4. shawn says:

luis gil is fun to watch

    • Nic D "the TX 2 Stepper" says:

Agreed! RSL’s diamond is really dynamic. I’ve seen all their guys at the tip and interchanging on the wing. Everybody but DredHead has been at the tip with everyone dropping in to overload the center of the park.

Ishizaki is looking useless right now. The gals need some real wingers with Rob Friend in the middle. He is easily the best signing of the season for the Gals. But they have to have some wing play.

  5. Ralph says:

Morales now injured by a foul from behind. Not called a foul.

This is a joke. The technical players get hacked and pushed.

  6. Ralph says:

Donovan gets beat by a nice touch in midfield and hacks RSL player down from behind. No card.

Saborio retaliates by crushing de la Garza intentionally for a yellow.

Luis Gil makes a nice move on the wing and is shoved to the ground.

    This is barely soccer.

  7. Ralph says:

3 people in this game subbed for injury now because of reckless tackles.

    • Increase0 says:

Yup, I saw the last one. Just went in through the back of his legs. Oh he “got the ball” but only after hacking up his ankles.

      • Ralph says:

        Yup!

Its depressing when you actively watch to see where skillful play is being discouraged.

  8. Expat4455 says:

This makes me think of something. I was sitting at a poker table in a casino a couple months ago and being new, someone asked me where I was from. I told him and he asked me if I liked soccer. Then this guy to my right said to me, with a gleam in his eye: “Don’t you thing soccer would be better it they put pads on and………….you know…………..let them mix it up” (while he pounded a fist into the palm of his other hand.

This is not an uncommon viewpoint in America. But I say, forget about them. Let’s try to play the game the way it is supposed to be played (totally different from American football) and just see what happens.

Dang, this is not going to be easy with dummies like that guy at the poker table with me.

  9. Ralph says:

Literally the last three passes from the Galaxy into RSL half have resulted in the Galaxy player being bulldozed from behind when receiving.

  10. fischy says:

Question: Does DC United have the slowest, most ineffectual lineup in MLS history?

Question: Will EJ get as many chances with DCU as Altidore gets with Sunderland?

  11. SilverRey says:

Bernardo Anor 2 Philadelphia Union 0

  12. RB says:

2 goals for the Rapids in a 3-min span, despite a blocked penalty. Maybe they’ll break Portland’s tying streak today…

    • Nic D "the TX 2 Stepper" says:

Donovan Ricketts has been atrocious. Not sure if it was the weather or what but he was almost useless.

      • RB says:

He looked off from the start, actually, if you saw or can go back and watch the first few mins…

  13. Nic D "the TX 2 Stepper" says:

Did you guys here the kids “talking” 77:28 in the Columbus Crew broadcast? Sounded like two boys. Anybody catch what they were saying?
