Darren Mattocks and Pedro Morales’ recent performances are quickly making Vancouver Whitecaps fans forget about losing Camilo this offseason.

Though he didn’t score, Mattocks was a workhorse during his 65 minutes on the field as the Whitecaps outlasted the Dynamo, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at BC Place. Jordan Harvey and Kenny Miller scored for Carl Robinson’s squad while the Dynamo scored a second-half goal off the head of Ricardo Clark.

The Whitecaps came out of the gates at full speed and their work paid off in the 14th minute. A failed clearance from a corner kick found its way back to Whitecaps maestro Morales, who whipped in a great ball on the half-volley to the far post.

Whitecaps defender Andy O’Brien met the ball and headed it into the path of Harvey, who arrived just ahead of Dynamo goalkeeper Tally Hall and poked the ball in for a goal.

The home side kept pressing for a second as Mattocks and Morales terrorized the Dynamo defense. However, the Dynamo stuck around thanks to the midfield trio of Brad Davis, Ricardo Clark, and Oscar Boniek Garcia to provide strength in the middle.

The Whitecaps doubled their advantage in the second half when Dynamo right back Kofi Sarkodie was whistled for a handball in the box at the end of a mazy Mattocks run. Miller stepped up for the Whitecaps and scored twice, after the first penalty kick attempt was disallowed due to encroachment.

Mattocks was removed from the match in the 65th minute for fresh legs in Sebastian Fernandez but it was at this point when the Dynamo began to assert themselves more on the match.

The visitors received their just rewards in the 75th minute when Clark sent a glancing header in the net from a curled in Brad Davis free kick. Try as they might though, the Dynamo weren’t able to find their way past Whitecaps goalkeeper David Ousted for the second time as the Whitecaps held on for their second win of the season.

Alas… The Dynamo and field turf, never a good combination.

Plus a no call on a clear penalty.
