Is Camilo Sanvezzo leaving Major League Soccer? Not according to the Vancouver Whitecaps.

The Whitecaps are denying a report from ESPN Deportes that alleges Camilo is joining Liga MX club Queretaro.

“There is no truth to the rumour,” the Whitecaps said in an issued statement Wednesday. “Camilo is currently under contract and we look forward to seeing him and the rest of the team for the start of our preseason camp later this month.”

The ESPN report on Wednesday had cited comments from Queretaro coach Ignacio Ambriz, who said Camilo could arrive in Mexico by Saturday.

The rumor could be a negotiation tactic to secure a better contract for the Brazilian forward, who was the leading scorer in MLS in 2013. Camilo scored 22 times last season and also had six assists in 32 matches, leading the league.

The Whitecaps had picked up the option on Camilo’s contract shortly after the season had ended and he reportedly earned $247,000 in 2013.

Should Camilo play in Liga MX or stay in MLS? Think the Whitecaps should give him a higher salary? Do you see him lighting up the scoreboards in MLS again in 2014?

Uh yeah. Pay the man. DP money. Lots of it.

  2. Petaluman says:

This is the kind of talented player MLS needs to keep around.

  3. James says:

    Camilo! Take all my money!

  4. AMPhibian says:

pay him more, keep him happy. Whitecaps would so much worse without him, or with him, unhappy and unfocused.

The fact VWFC are denying the “rumour” leads me to believe they simply haven’t finalized the transfer sum yet. MLS really controls transfers in and out of clubs, and the league has demonstrated a stubbornness to let players go for low-ball offers – rightfully so, I might add. In Camilo’s case, I hope Vancouver takes Queretaro for all they’re worth because he’s a genuine talent and an asset to our league.

Yeah, I tend to think this is a “Camilo isn’t going anywhere! (until they offer more money!)” kind of deal.

And that sucks, because he was great to watch play. CBA negotiations/salary cap increase can’t come soon enough…

    • Helium-3 says:

Hope he does not go for anything less than 3 million. 4 OR 5 million would open some eyes.

Wow! Are we really becoming a feeder league for liga mx. Well good luck posing any kind of threat to Mexican teams in concacaf. If this story is true then the league really needs to have a serious talk about raising the salary cap as well as finding ways of keeping the leagues promising stars from leaving. Something also needs to be done about players leaving our league so they can ride the bench.

This seems to make more sense…

Story from BC paper that came out a few hours ago.

-Caps say they picked up Camilo’s option for 2014.
-Camilo’s agent seems to believe Camilo had ability to decline option and become Free Agent.

I don’t think Player Options exist in MLS (Ives?)
    Never seen/heard of one before.
