Ream suffers broken nose, likely to miss Bolton’s weekend clash

Tim Ream is doubtful for Bolton Wanderers’ match this weekend, and all because of an apparent foul that happened seconds after kickoff and went unpunished.

Ream suffered a broken nose and had to get three stitches on Tuesday after Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin collided into him in the 15th second of Bolton’s 2-1 loss. Ream was immediately tended to and substituted in the fifth minute after it was deemed he could not continue.

The injury has left Ream in serious jeopardy of missing Saturday’s road trip to Ipswich Town and Bolton head coach Dougie Freedman in disbelief because of the fact that the clash resulted in no card for Austin.

“I don’t want to say too much because it will end up costing me money. I would rather give it to charity,” Freedman told The Bolton News. “When I go to meetings and they talk about dangerous play and the effect that causes, a guy walks away with three stitches and a broken nose and it seems to be an accident. I find it hard to believe.

“Was it because it was the first minute of the game (that it went unpunished)? Yes it was.”

Ream has quietly been having a solid season for the 18th-placed Trotters, starting in 23 league matches for the club and going the distance in all but two of them.

What do you think of Ream suffering a broken nose? Agree there was no card shown because the collision happened so early? Would you like to see him called up for the U.S. Men’s National Team’s March friendly?

Too bad. Watched the recent Bolton FA Cup match, and Ream seemed to be playing a good role for them at left back. Passing was effective, and he looked more composed on the ball and more of a physical presence than in previous years. Also took corner kicks from the left side for them, which I thought was a nice bonus. Hope he recovers quickly and gets back in the side.

Too bad? He’s lucky. I thought it was a concussion. He’ll bounce back from this quickly and still be in contention for a place in the team come March.

March sidebacks: Chandler, Lichaj, Cameron, and Ream please.

Would be interested in knowing what exactly happened. Is this a collision between a player’s high-velocity elbow and Ream’s face happened to be in the way? In any case, if no card was given retrospective action could be taken, couldn’t it?

Yes, I would like to see him in the March friendly.

Recover fully by March? It’s just a broken nose. He should be able to play next week.
