With seven weeks remaining in the Liga MX Apertura season, the picture at the top of the table is becoming clearer.

Club America and Club Leon, first and second in the standings, respectively,  both overcame recent defeats with victories of their own, while Morelia, Queretaro, and Chiapas each slipped back with defeats.

Las Aguilas and Jaguares de Chiapas met last Saturday in rainy Mexico City, with the field becoming so wet over the course of the 90 minute match that passes on the ground became nearly impossible on the Estadio Azteca turf. America put in a strong performance over the match, scoring three straight goals before Jaguares hit back one, ending in a 3-1 scoreline. Right back Miguel Layun scored arguably the goal of the game with an absolute screamer from outside the box.

Here’s a closer look at the best of Liga MX from Apertura Round 11:

MONTERREY STUN MORELIA ON ROAD

20-year-old Luis Madrigal picked a great way to score his first two goals of the season.

After earning a taste of Liga MX play in last spring’s Clausura season and halfway through this season’s Apertura campaign, Madrigal was sent on as a halftime substitute and proceded to score two goals, seven minutes apart, making it 2-0 for Monterrey by the 56th minute.

Madrigal took both goals well with his right foot, and though Aldo Ramirez scored on a 35-yard blast to cut the deficit in half in the 67th minute, youngster Alejandro Garcia scored on a long-range shot in the 77th minute to finish off Morelia on the road, 3-1.

TOLUCA ROUT QUERETARO

Though Queretaro have had an exciting start to the 2013 Apertura campaign, Toluca reminded them just how much farther they need to go before they can enter the top tier of teams in Mexico.

Just five minutes into the match, Toluca forward Raul Nava won a header in the box and then without much interference from the Queretaro defense and goalkeeper, slotted home with his right foot to take an early lead. Nava again sliced open the Queretaro defense, passing to teammate Edgar Benitez before Nava received the ball again in front of an empty net, doubling the lead in the 32nd minute.

One minute later, Mexican National Team pool forward Isaac Brizuela scored on a delightful chip against the poor Edgar Hernandez in goal for Queretaro, who had no chance of saving the shot.

In the 80th minute, Paulo da Silva put the finishing touches on the 4-0 victory to Toluca with a perfectly placed header that just crossed the line after hitting the underside of the crossbar.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Luis Madrigal – Monterrey: The former Mexico U20 forward scored his first ever Liga MX brace in a huge way, getting both goals off the bench at one of the best teams in the Apertura season, Morelia. Madrigal’s performance in round 11 helped the club in the absence of star forward Humberto Suazo, who is still working his way back from a hamstring injury suffered on international duty.
