SAN JOSE, Costa Rica– The World Cup qualifying rematch that has been circled on every calendar in Costa Rica since the infamous snow game in March is here, as the U.S. Men’s National Team put their 12-match winning streak on the line against Costa Rica at Estadio Nacional (10pm, BeIN Sport).

The Americans can take a major step toward qualifying for the 2014 World Cup, and possibly even clinch a berth, with a victory tonight. History isn’t on their side as they take the field tonight having never won a qualifier, or match of any kind, in Costa Rica.

The ‘Ticos’ know how important the match is as well, needing a win at home to strengthen their own hold on a World Cup qualifying place.

SBI will be providing live match commentary directly from here at Estadio Nacional so please feel free to follow all the action here. As always, you are welcome to share your own thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.

Enjoy the action (Commentary is after the jump):

  1. myett says:

According to Prosoccertalk on NBC they said a close US Soccer source said Dempsey looks to be at 60% right now in this USMNT camp…do you Ives, start a 60% Dempsey or a in-form Johannsson?

  2. SoundersOff says:

Like I’ve been saying, Dempsey isn’t fit or in form and shouldn’t start. NBC confirming that.

  3. shawn says:

Start Dempsey! but bench him if playing bad

    • SoundersOff says:

And waste an early sub in bad weather and hostile away environment on a player you already knew was not going to play well?

Doesn’t seem like a good idea.

  4. DanO says:

Anyone got a good link for a stream? I am on vacation and do not have access to beIN sport…

    • Freddie Footballer says:

      try first row sports

      • Dw says:

first row doesnt have it. anything else

        • Mike says:

          First row definitely has it.

        • Long Time Listener says:

uhh, yes, they do. either that or i’m just tripping balls watching this heart attack inducing first half.

bein feed seems to be link 2

al jazeera or something feed is link 3 (that i always end up watching instead of the american because it seems 480 at least while the american feeds always come in 360 or worse. plus they have a longer 3 second delay it seems.) the belgian guy lone commentator takes a bit of getting used to but i’d say he is a step up from the agony bein’s guys bring.

  5. Bryan says:

How in the world could Dempsey be that out of shape? No excuse

  6. jcro says:

ATT UVERSE announced today that BEIN Sports is on channel 662 and 1662HD. I hope it is true! Game on

  7. Freddie Footballer says:

Where are you guys watching it? I’m thinking First Row

    • Jordan28 says:

I’m watching it on tv thanks to Uverse picking up BEIN today. But yeah theres a good first row stream

      • 357 says:

Yeah, Wouldn’t have even checked but I was watching something in that neighborhood and it showed up! Awesome

  8. Senord says:

    Is Wondowlowski starting?

  9. David M says:

Don’t like the defense at all. It might be a very long night.

  10. KEEP says:

Klinsy trickery, saving him for Mexico whilst throwing CR a curve ball in KB

  11. Shawn says:

wow i guess its karma for us raving about our new depth damn!!!!!!

  12. Sofa King says:

    Any links to live feeds!?!?!?!?!?!

  13. Travis says:

Oh god bein sports commentators are brutal

  14. Shawn says:

why isnt mix diskerud in he is more attacking than geoff

  15. petedx says:

    nice marking dempsey

  16. Chris says:

No handball call on the CR shot to corner, huh…

  17. Mike E. says:

Omfg what a blatant handball leading to the Costa rica goal. How in the fin heck is that not called.

  18. HoBo says:

not a surprise CR is going crazy, get the game settled down and we’ll come back

  19. RK says:

Really weak by Beasley on that goal. He should’ve blocked it.

  20. Travis says:

Wow the US looks to be moving in slo-mo in this game. Clear that Costa Rica wants it about 10 times more than the US right now

  21. Bryan says:

Apparently the US didn’t get the memo that the game started 10 minutes ago. This is just sad.

  22. Pace says:

Can we stop with the Beasley at defense thing now.

  23. meowmix says:

    oh lord. not good

  24. AC says:

Seriously Tim Howard…At least dive to attempt to block it

  25. HoBo says:

2 down now, gotta have heart and want it………

  26. Shawn says:

    why is beasley starting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • meowmix says:

I didn’t feel like either of those goals were his fault. In slow motion the first might have looked easy to block, but in real time it was a flash header. Second one there were two guys where beasley was, and the dude who flew in wasn’t his original dude. Perhaps though. Feel like Zusi is playing pretty poorly

  27. meowmix says:

when are we going to start guzan?

  28. Dirk Van Zee says:

Like it’s a News Flash that the USA are inept in international football, why is anyone surprised.

    • TomG says:

So inept that they have the longest international winning streak in the world. Duh.

      • Dirk Van Zee says:

        Really,

Not when it counts. You think minnows and friendlies playing B and C squads with nothing on the line is a streak to boast about, LOL. Love drinking the Kool-aid do ya? LOL Will this end up 5-0 tonight? I think it might.

      • Dirk Van Zee says:

Not an longer after tonight, LOL

    • AC says:

Yeah, those wins against Italy, Bosnia, tie in Russia and Azteca, as well as that win in Azteca mean they sure are inept….

      • Dirk Van Zee says:

I guarantee you that world cup draw time every team in pot 1 and 2 are hoping the USA falls into their group, I know I am.

        • AC says:

Didn’t know you met all those teams?

          • Dirk Van Zee says:

Just stating the obvious for anyone knowing European football.

            • AC says:

Ah, the usual Euro high horse person. I’ve nothing with European football at all. Rather, I’m a fan of Holland, etc. I guess you’re of the usual mystic that the traditional powers must stay the only powers, and no other nations should have the ability to rise up in the sport. Reminds me of people from Britain who think their country is the greatest in the sport.

        • atleticodemadridfan says:

Yo, rocks for brains – the US won their group last WC.

  29. IHOP says:

Since when was Beasley this poor at LB? I mean, last time he played in a WCQ in Costa Rica… oh wait nevermind.

I don’t think I’ve ever been comfortable with Beasley as a LB. Yes he has great recovery speed, but he just gets beat in some way too often.

  30. biff says:

How many times have I said DaMarcus Beasley at left back is a disaster waiting to happen?

  31. AC says:

Jones still gives away too easily…Cameron should have been at mid

  32. meowmix says:

that field looks completely chewed up. divots everywhere

  33. Dirk Van Zee says:

Exactly what happens when Donovan returns, a stink fest LOL. Klinsy’s team won’t make it out of the group stage, hope Holland draw the USA as I chalk that up to an easy W.

    • Mike E. says:

Might want to beat Estonia first. You know that crap team you tied today.

    • TomG says:

You mean perpetually underachieving Holland? The team with all those great players that, can’t ever win a tournament? That Holland?

      • Dirk Van Zee says:

At least we have won something and have an enduring legacy of great players and putting a stamp on football tactics, and I would say that being in the final 3 times yet being extremely unlucky two twice have to play a host nation while never being able to host a cup is an achievement in itself. But I digress to your almighty USA football hum a mean soccer greatness. I BOW down to you almighty USA soccer nation! LOL, who is your greatest player and what has he done? We have only 20 million population whats your excuse?

        • AC says:

Well, you know we’re a country of the best athletes in the WORLD. The sport took longer to catch on here then other countries where it was already established for a while, or rather the ONLY main sort. We like to be a little diverse here.

        • Chris says:

Get a life. Or, just die. But, either way, leave…

        • TomG says:

You DON’T ever win ANYTHING! That’s the whole point. You’re always Looking great and asking trash the year before the cup and crying into your beers as you watch the mighty orange self destruct in the tournament because you’re a bunch of selfish losers who can’t sacrifice your egos for the benefit of the team. Socce is the sixth or seventh most popular sport in the US and we will still win a cup before Holland because we never give up and because we overachieve while you cry about how unlucky you were. Ha!

      • Dirk Van Zee says:

A stroll in the park today with nothing to play for, um I mean we pretty much qualified last Spring.

      • Dirk Van Zee says:

Um yes they have, you must not know football history. Ever hear of European Championship? Usually a much better tourney then the diluted World Cup where anybody like the USA can show up due to their crappy football region.

        • Chris says:

As Mike E. above asked – how’d that draw with Estonia feel? Barely a 2-2 draw, hunh?

        • TomG says:

Yeah, you’ve won as many of those as Greece and not nearly as recently. You must be sooooooo proud, ha!

        • MidWest Ref says:

sure we have heard of it – isnt the European Championship that the tournament where Greece won scoring 2 goals in regular time through the whole tournament – where Denmark won when it didn’t even qualify – where Russia and Poland have won as many as the Netherlands?

  34. Dc says:

    what an effing embarrassment.

  35. Philly Union Rule says:

    Where is Bradley?

  36. Dc says:

this team is NOTHING without Bradley.

  37. matt says:

    Pathetic

  38. Dw says:

    Everybody’s first touch is off

  39. meowmix says:

What is up with this field?! Dem Divots!

    • Chaca says:

Both teams are playing on the same field.

      • meowmix says:

Okay, imagine that there are 3 foot holes throughout the field. Both teams playing on the same field, but it still completely changes the game. I mean, if the only requirement is that each team play with equivalent conditions, shouldn’t we just allow teams to have ice rinks for fields if they want?

  40. Philly Union Rule says:

Bradley not listed on the bench either. Did I miss something?

  41. TomG says:

Our two best Possession players by far are MB and Jozy. It’s amazing what a difference they make.

  42. barachus says:

we look good… yikes. also, tommy smith commentating on some obscure channel that most people do not get. what the hell man, when is this ever going to change.

  43. Big Red says:

We need to sub our whole defense. Especially our outside backs.

  44. Nate says:

If we score, it’ll be on a trip and a fall…an accident at best.

  45. Samuel says:

I don’t know how this game will end, but we’ve been humbled and brought down from cloud nine so far. Like I said before, a loss in CRI and at home to the region’s superpower MEX will make things very interesting for JK and USMNT.

  46. Dc says:

Jones’ performance is rivaling Bornstein’s. He is so terrible. I’m convinced now. He does not deserve to start.

    • matt says:

Really? Cameron has been the worse of them way way way to many give aways

    • Mike E. says:

Seriously? Cameron has been so bad.

    • chris_thebassplayer says:

They’ve both been mediocre with their possession and pressure relief passing…

This will be the mantra repeated over and over…. “This game just shows how important MB is to the US midfield” we’ve going to hear that about 5000 times. He’s a level above all the other options.

  47. Samuel says:

Dempsey and Donovan should not play together, they cancel each other out.

  48. Patrick says:

I don’t think anybody can complain too much about the Mexican Ref at this point. He’s called CR fouls in the box and diving.

  49. TomG says:

Great pass by Zusi and great run by JJ redeeming themselves for off nights so far. We’ve weathered the storm. Can we settle in and take it to them.

  50. Samuel says:

One thing we need to do to close the gap on MEX, USMNT must learn to not turn so yellow when they play abroad.

    • AC says:

Or rather in the CONCACAF region….Against Mexico in Azteca, they played their hearts out against their archrival… But against Central American countries, it seems to be a conundrum with them. Somehow, they play well against Italy and Bosnia, but less intensity until down goals against Central American countries…Drives you nuts

    • petedx says:

According to the table mexico is the one who needs to close the gap.

  51. David M says:

Why did Dempsey take the penalty? He’s been lousy at that throughout his career, and that was a very poor penalty. Got lucky that it deflected in.

    • TomG says:

Yeah, he’s not really a great pure ball striker. I would have Jozy take it if he were in the game, but there isn’t really ANYONE I’d trust for that shot. LD has missed several recently. I think Zusi missed one recently too. JJ, Fabian? I’m not in low with either of those guys taking a pk.

    • Bac says:

I love Deuce, his game, his toughness, his attitude….
Everything except his Spot Kicks… gotta agree with you on this one, never been his strong point
But it went in… and we still got 45 minutes

    • John says:

Did you see him grab the armband? He kept touching it right after the call. It was pretty funny.

    • PD says:

he’s the captain and it’s 100th cap. I’m betting the rest of the team gave him right of first refusal and we went for it.

  52. Brad C says:

    When did MB get hurt?

  53. PD says:

Give the current lineup another 10 minutes after the half now that they are making headway, then go with

Howard; Cameron, Gonzalez, Besler; Beasley; Beckerman, Jones; Zusi, Donovan, F. Johnson; Dempsey

If you can get the equalizer sub out Dempsey for Johansson and Bedoya for Donovan, save their legs for Mexico.

  54. Bean says:

Rough start, but CRC at home is not a pushover. I expect that the team will come out of the locker room a better team in the second half. The defenders need to stop going route one, and play through Cameron, and Jones, while Deuce, and Landon need to start moving a bit better to protect the passes from the mids.

  55. PD says:

Wow, Terri Leigh…. eat a sandwich, please.

  56. Long Time Listener says:

i hate when people write that, but eff me it was the first thing to come out of my finger tips

  57. Yankeedom says:

Bedoya in for Zusi. Pull Cameron. Put EJ up top with Duece. Switch to a 4-1-3-2.

  58. Joey says:

Beasley is garbage. Get him out

  59. Samuel says:

I don’t know if any of you have noticed, but Howard has become a sack of goals every time he plays.

  60. Bean says:

    Bengston goal. 1-1 Honduras

  61. Mat says:

JK with aces up his sleeve in his offense loaded bench. Jozy and Iceman to give us the win, send us to the WC and make JK look a genius yet again?

  62. MidWest Ref says:

and honduras ties the score at Azteca. mex 1 – honduras 1

  63. JB says:

Mex vs Hon 1-1 uhmm interesting…

  64. Bklyn says:

Who HAS been good? I’m ready to agree that Jones has been awful; Beasley ineffective; Zusi bad; Cameron not great. Dempsey poor, really. VERY lucky to have scored that PK. And honestly, I haven’t really noticed anyone else, except that second goal I think Howard might have…tried?

I would be thrilled with a draw.

  65. MidWest Ref says:

    carlos costly – honduras 2-1

  66. Bean says:

    Costly! 2-1 Honduras!

  67. PD says:

HOLY CRASP MEXICO AND HONDURAS ARE TIED.

  68. Ilya says:

I’d bring Mixx instead of Jones. We need someone who could create something. Cameron is good as DF, instead of Jones, not Bradley.

  69. Brett says:

Can we ban Clint from taking PKs now? He’s so bad at it. He always telegraphs his placement and fires directly at the keeper.

  70. JB says:

    Guys whats just happened?

  71. Flagermunsen says:

    2-1 Honduras. Mexico is fragile.

    • Samuel says:

That’s a stunner, but there’s still a lot to play. However, if HON holds for a tie, Chepo is out and we can knock MEX out when we play them.

  72. petedx says:

Well the Mexico job market will have at least 1 opening come tomorrow.

  73. Rabbit says:

I’m having “we didn’t deserve that penalty” remorse. Can you guys tell me why it was definitely, legitimately a penalty?

My doubts are that I strongly believe the ball was out of FJ’s reach. He wouldn’t have gotten to it, and the keeper I think was genuinely going for the ball and found himself tackling FJ instead.

  74. HoBo says:

    Mex 1-2 Honduras 70th minute

  75. USA ftw says:

    diving sob Dempsey garbage

  76. the original jb says:

Amazing that over 50% of the above voters think we should bench either Donovan or Dempsey for a 21 yr old with one cap in a friendly. Wow

  77. Bean says:

Way to get involved in the match, Landon.

  78. chris_thebassplayer says:

I didn’t like Deuce as the point at all. Doesn’t work with him dropping deep or exchanging positions LD… We need to have a greater presence in the box…even EJ would be an improvement…rather see LD wide right with Ice playing the point with Deuce underneath. This first half will definitely heat up the debate of Beas playing in the backline…I still can’t see that at a WC…no way.

  79. over there says:

anyone got a link to a stream for this one?

  80. petedx says:

Mexican fans are giving Ole’s and seemingly cheering for Honduras now. And should have been 3-1, Honduras missed an absolute sitter.

  81. MidWest Ref says:

Azteco is cheering Ole for Honduras passing the ball. Incredible. And then Bengston misses and open goal for a possible third for Honduras.

    • petedx says:

this is schadenfreude at it’s best. And now they are booing when mexico has the ball.

      • MidWest Ref says:

me or the mexico fans Pete? and does anyone besides you, me and Biff know what schadenfreude means?

        • petedx says:

Well possibly you but certainly me. And if you know spanish the unimas broadcast is pure gold.

          • MidWest Ref says:

            what about biff?

          • MidWest Ref says:

How do you say schadenfreude in Spanish?

          • DaveW says:

It’s good with Pablo Ramírez and Jesús Bracamontes(2nd half). The announcers in the first half. especially Felix Fernández, not so much.
Anyway, Honduras went from looking like they were trying to give the game away in the first half with so many bad giveaways in their end to scrapping their way to a couple loose balls on Mexico errors (Salcido then Reyes) and putting a couple chances away.

  82. John says:

Kljestan is in New York tonight , looks like he’ll have to be called in

  83. Bean says:

    Fuera Chepo?

    • fischy says:

Leaving Chicharito on the bench to start? Probably won’t be fired before next week, but the only thing that could save his job is beating the USA.

  84. Samuel says:

Honduras won at Azteca before we did. Let’s hope we tie it in CRI.

  85. espada says:

Aztecazo confirmed. Wow, now I kinda don’t feel bad if the U.S. loses in Costa Rica.

  86. Samuel says:

    Hah, Howard…

    • matt says:

Howard should not be starting these games. Period. End of story

      • Paul says:

The US midfield is being owed which is causing the defense to be overrun (Omar and Beasler have both picked up yellows). We are down 4 players…4 for Mexico (Cameron, Besler, Bradley, Omar).

We need an understudy for Bradley. A healthy Stuart Holden would have been perfect.

      • Anthony says:

I love the way you are not overreacting, Matt.

        • matt says:

Howard has not made saves. Plain and simple. Every legitimate shot sent howards way went in. And its a trend. He has not made saves a top keeper should

  87. PD says:

that was Ghana all over again…

  88. Samuel says:

Have we not any more goalkeepers?

  89. MikeG says:

    Game. Set. Match. 3-1

  90. Bklyn says:

That’s unfortunate, but really Howard should do better on that. And now the Concacaf lying down may commence.

  91. Shawn says:

    mexico loses two yellows automatically

  92. Leo says:

Never been so happy to see an American get a yellow. Besler and Gonzalez have been awful, that pairing needs to be revisited.

  93. MikeG says:

Howard does tend to overplay at times…and those times are BAD

  94. EdBurke says:

Our back line sucks. IIRC, this was the concern when we started qualifying. It still is.

  95. espada says:

Hey, so who will miss the Mexico match in Columbus? Wasn’t able to see the bookings earlier.

  96. BostonAndy says:

I thought the US was so confident they could win this game. I have seen no confidence…only sloppy play. A 12 game win streak is great but if you cant even get a tie in CR what does it matter. If the US really wants to have any chance of doing anything in Brazil you have to win games like this. CR is a decent team but they are not even a mediocre team in Europe. Really Really disappointed in this game.

    • Mike in Missouri says:

Wow, let’s back up. Included in that 12 game win streak was 3 WCQ wins and a regional championship.

Costa Rica would certainly be in the middle of a European qualifying group, above the 2 minnows in each group and below the top two, and depending on the group, in the top 2.

    • MikeG says:

Passing and dribbling poor. Possession. Poor. Cannot wait to see the Mexico game. The USA has been much better. You never know what you will get with the USA. The team that beats Germany or the team that loses to Jamaica. Never know. This came is case in point.

    • petedx says:

Altidore with an all time stupid move there.

    • Bklyn says:

Come on. CR were BRILLIANT in the first 15 minutes. Navas was brilliant (if a bit of a simulator). the problem? NO US midfield. Jones is awful. Cameron bad tonight. I prefer Torres, but I’m in the minority.
And now a YELLOW for a bump from altidore???

  97. Mencken says:

Tonight’s game may be foreshadowing the impending attack on Syria. Alas, American hubris.

  98. Mike R says:

    Miscalculation by Klinsi.

Mexico is on the ropes and te US could TKO them…

    BUT

Now Bradley Jozy Cameron Bessler all out anyone else ?

    • Samuel says:

We have a deep pool of players. So, don’t worry.

    • Zack says:

Your right how dare Klinsi tell Bradley to warm up, hurt Jozy in England and have Bessler get a very weak yellow that no one seems to think he deserved based upon his reaction.

    • Brett says:

Bradley isn’t out for sure. He was walking without a boot and putting weight on the injured foot. He may be fit to go.

I believe Klinsmann might have suspected he would have to take a yellow at some point in the game and held him out for precautionary reasons with that in the back of his mind.

  99. Mencken says:

Tonight’s game may be foreshadowing of larger future events. Alas, American hubris.

  100. PD says:

wow, soccer is a funny game… the one position where we didn’t have depth for this match cost us. Not having Bradley was the difference in those first 15 minutes, but really, I don’t know how much of a difference he would have made… the Tico’s came outta the gate like a bat outta 7734 and this side was not braced for it. Full credit to CR for owning this match…

Mexico is going to play as if their life depends on it in Columbus. We’d better bring the passion … and a shovel to bury ‘em.

  101. Drewbles says:

The central midfield without Bradley is a nightmare. The only pass they can make is backwards or sideways. They’re also a step slow to react to anything.

    • chris_thebassplayer says:

Agreed, we’re a complete disorganized mess without MB in the middle and Jones doesn’t come close as a fill in.

  102. MikeG says:

More than anything you can only look at the USA on the field. Collectively…not getting it done. They deserve this result to digest and get constipated.

  103. Mat says:

Meh, you can’t win’em all. I still like out chances at getting to Brazil, which is really the only important thing. Now let’s get serious though and put johnson back in LB.

  104. YO says:

Why the hell he wait this long to take Dempsey out, if it was not for the penalty you wouldn’t know he was playing.

  105. John says:

    Great now Jozy is out

  106. Tom says:

*OVERLY DRAMATIC STATEMENT ABOUT ____________________ (fill in any US player) BEING HORRIBLY OVERRATED!*

We’re going to lose tonight. That sucks. We’re going to lose while playing poorly for most of the game. That sucks even more. It’s not the end of the world. We’d won quite a few leading up to this…but that streak was bound to end sometime.

    • John says:

Everyone has said for a year or more Bradley is the most important player we have. We saw that play out tonight.

    • Rabbit says:

I agree with you. But d@mn it sucks that we’ll be without Jozy, Bradley, and Besler for next week’s game.

  107. MikeG says:

Altidore…you know better….OMG….no description….just go back to England.

  108. ThatKidNandez says:

    Graham Zusi is TRASH!

  109. Mat says:

Mexican ref making sure we have key suspensions.

  110. USAmr says:

Absolutely stupid Jozy. It’s a Mexican ref you have to be smarter than that.

  111. Bean says:

    Los Ticos wanted it more.

  112. MikeG says:

It’s not so bad to take a loss knowing you gave it your all…nobody showed up….Jamaica Dejavu.

  113. Mike E. says:

    I want an investigation. Now.

Those two yellow cards werecrooked. Period.

    • Petaluman says:

Jozy only has himself to blame. Sheesh. I guess he misses Sunderland already.

    • Brett says:

You can’t be serious about Jozy’s. Ball was in keeper’s hands and he runs in and charges in with a shoulder/elbow into a defender’s back. Yellow was 100% justified.

Cameron’s was a bit soft, but honestly, he sucks so I don’t care whether he plays or not.

  114. Paul Miller says:

We’re going to have a heck of a time piecing together a coherent 11 for Mexico. Eh, actually no matter how you look at it, we’d have a heck of a time if Bradley can’t go. By far the most important USMNT player.

  115. YO says:

Well JK really go it wrong today…Orozco don’t belong there and Beasley got owned tonite as well. Gold Cup team would have won it.

  116. Samuel says:

I’ve said it all along, if we lose to CRI and at home to a now angry and hungry MEX, things will get very dramatic for USA, because they finish at Panama, and if today’s game could be used a s forecast, they may lose that one as well, because it just so seems they chicken out when they play in Central America.

    • Brett says:

What universe is this where the USA/Mexico game wasn’t going to be competitive? People are acting like because Mexico are desperate for points that’s going to change something. Both teams were always going to go all out for this match.

      • Samuel says:

But now is even more special, and you know it. They don’t want the USA to virtually send them to play-offs.

        • Brett says:

As opposed to that other scenario where they would have been okay with losing or dropping two points against the USA?

  117. JJ says:

Somebody told me Landon was playing tonight. I checked the USMNT game and he was nowhere to be found. Did I watch the wrong game? Also, Cameron was garbage – we were completely overrun in the midfield.

    • Samuel says:

Another chicken shiat who seems to only play good at home and Gold Cup.

    • Brett says:

What game did you watch? Landon was clearly getting all of the attention and he was still affecting the game. Clint and Fabian ruined several golden opportunities created by Landon and his runs and distribution. He had a few giveaways, but that’s to be expected.

Dempsey was the real stinker for me tonight. Absolutely none of the flair and savvy we are used to, and he just looks slow and tired physically and mentally.

I hope Mix, Bedoya, and AJ play against Mexico. Dempsey, Eddie, and Zusi all take a seat.

      • USA no fair play says:

especially since Dempsey was captain. captain my @ss.

      • chris_thebassplayer says:

I agree about Deuce. He is not in shape and off form…Probably should have been a late game sub, but JK really emphasized his 100th cap. What are you going to do, JK made him the capt. which means he’s a starter 100% of time.. I was hoping Deuce would be a short term captain given the flap that was surrounding the team… at the time it was the best way to go. Barring injury the only guys I want to see starting 100% of the time are MB and LD.

I think it would be a huge mistake if MB is not the captain at the WC

      • todd says:

what became clear tonight are the following things:

        1) jermaine jones cannot be a holding midfielder. dribbles too much and has trouble threading the needle.
        2) donovan needs a big strong striker to hold up the ball for him to be effective.
        3) our center defenders are too slow footed to both press high.
        4) dempsey may not a good option for playing a lone striker.
        5) something was wrong with Howard. normally with 10 minutes to pay and down 1 or 2 goals, you’d see the keeper trying to get the ball up field as fast as possible. instead he plodded it out of the back through defenders who couldn’t move the ball forward.
        6) US just wasn’t ready to play. for that you can only blame Klinsmann.

    • USA no fair play says:

Dempsey was garbage. Donovan was visible unlike Dempsey.

  118. David M says:

What a dumb play by Jozy! Knowing that you’re already on a yellow card!

  119. calidude says:

At least this game was played fairly unlike the lat time both teams played under that blizzard in Denver. Not to worry USA will qualify easily. Mexico not so sure.

    • Samuel says:

Not so fast, if we lose to CRI and at home to a now angry and hungry MEX, things will get very dramatic for USA, because they finish at Panama, and if today’s game could be used a s forecast, they may lose that one as well, because it just so seems they chicken out when they play in Central America.

      • Kosh says:

I think you should post that one more time…just to ensure that the sky falls.

      • Bklyn says:

It also seems that you confuse your pronouns when referring to the USMNT. Is it “we” or “they”? And what American refers to the United States as USA without the definite article?
“Samuel,” I applaud your guise, and I’m sorry that Mexico only won a single game in the WCQ.

        • Samuel says:

I am fast typing, but to answer USMNT = we and they. Also, there are two things in this order I’d like to happen in CONCACAF qualification:

          1. USA qualifies
          2. MEX doesn’t

I hope I cleared your doubts.

    • Zack says:

Ha, I think the pitch in Denver was better than the stuff they played on tonight.

  120. MikeG says:

I hope they drug test Costa Rica.

  121. MJC-DC says:

In hindsight, I really wish Klinsi had started a true forward and a more attacked minded CM with either Jones or Cameron. I know it was an away game but we did far to little with a 67.3% possession. Shambolic defending and a failure to create meaningful chances out of the possession. Columbus hope your ready to bring the noise cause our boys could use a lift next week.

  122. Bean says:

    Luis Suarez golazo. 2-1 Uruguay.

  123. MikeG says:

Costa Rica had a good game plan and the players to implement it…congratulations Costa Rica.

    • Zack says:

They got lucky with Bradley getting hurt so close to kick off. The US was out of it for the first 15. Between the CR second and third goal the US was the better team, if Depsey’s shot deflects in instead of out we talk about how the US over came a poor start and adversity.

That’s soccer though, all about the bounces breaks, and yellows given out by a ref that will affect a game verses that refs home country….I would like to see video of the Beasler yellow.

      • Jeff Fulton says:

I blame the cow. He must have tripped Bradly during warm-ups.

      • Paul says:

You and I saw 2 different games. Costa Rica could have had 4 goals before the Fabian Johnson penalty, seriously. They could have killed it in the first 35 mins. This was a tactical win for the Costa Rica coaching staff. The US got caught overconfident and shuffling after Bradley got hurt and Altidore (hold up play not starting).

      • away goals says:

So what should costa rica apologize for scoring their goals while the US was “out of it”? Well played costa rica, they deserve their win.

USMNT will lick its wounds and be ready to play against el tri.

  124. Bean says:

This loss is all Cameron’s fault. Everyone else gets a free pass.

    -Typical moron USA fan

  125. SBI Reader says:

Just disappointed in the guys. The whole of the country was against us. They were a bunch of classless sore losers that treated our guys like crap. Instead of fuel for the fire, USA comes out giving up two goals. Plus, what an idiotic foul by Altidore at the end.

  126. Dios Mio Amarillo!?!?! says:

So the US are not allowed to call in replacements for the yellow card suspended players?

  127. Scott e Dio93 says:

I agree Cameron was worse player but Jones can’t 90 minutes in every visiting game.

  128. Kosh says:

JK’s gotta take the hit on this one. Some strange decisions here but nothing that can’t be fixed for Tuesday.

    • biff says:

do you mean bad decisions like his stubborn stupid insistence on playing Beasley at left back and playing club left back Fabian Johnson as attacking midfieder(and Fabian sukked big time today) and playing club right back Geoff Cameron as a defensive midfielder?

      • Kosh says:

Ahhh, some of what you said? I don’t think Beas was the problem today and FJ and the whole midfield were lost without Bradley.

Orozco at RB and no true forward? Now that was not the smartest thing to do.Plus no Mix or real attacker in the mid? Well…

This was a wake up call to the Cameron at midfield crowd. Bradley is that good. He makes anyone in there look waaaaay better than they really are. I thought Jones would step up and lead but he was just lost out there.

What do you know – Evans does do something on this team.

  129. Samuel says:

One a more serious note, what an ass whooping.

  130. Bac says:

Everybody is going to pick out their respective players that played horribly or didn’t belong on the field in the first place…

    Let it go….

    Everybody stunk tonight- EVERYONE… it’s over…

  131. Bac says:

Everybody is going to pick out their respective players that played horribly or didn’t belong on the field in the first place…

    Let it go….

    Everybody stunk tonight- EVERYONE… it’s over…

  132. Samuel says:

One a more serious note, what an ass whooping.

    • Kosh says:

Taking a loss is like lifting a rotting log in a swamp – all kind of strange things come out to play.

I am not sure if you’re a US fan – if you are you seem to be enjoying this too much. If you are not I sure hope your a Costa Rica fan. Either way, the sad news for you is the US will qualify. When that happens feel free to celebrate with the rest of us, sulk or return to under the log.

      • Samuel says:

I am a US fan, all my life even before you. However I call it like it is and also realize that soccer is not everything. S, I take it lightly. Don’t tell me you are expecting the USA to win a WC anytime in modern history?

        • Kosh says:

What on Earth are you talking about? Which talking points are we covering here? The US loss? Your “super fan” card or the US winning a WC in “modern history” (whatever that means).

You are on cloud 9, I get it. But let’s tackle one issue at a time, OK?

          • Samuel says:

Well, you doubted I was a USMNT fan. That’s bad in my book and has to be corrected. And then you told me to go under the log in the swamp. So, that also deserved to be addressed.

One a more serious note, what an ass whooping.

            • Kosh says:

LOL…now that I read that, the swamp thing was out of order. My bad. That’s not my style and I apologize for that.

It’s frustration of the loss and what appeared to be your enjoying it. But you’re right, it’s just a game and no need to say/write ignorant things. Sorry about that.

              • Samuel says:

No man, I am not happy about the loss. But MEX defeat kinda makes it go down easier. Take care. I was never offended, btw.

  133. Bac says:

Everybody is going to pick out their respective players that played horribly or didn’t belong on the field in the first place…

    Let it go….

    Everybody stunk tonight- EVERYONE… it’s over…

  134. Jeff Fulton says:

The only thing worse than the USA defense was the Table Mate commercial.

  135. Jimmy says:

    Can yellows be appealed ?!?!
The Besler yellow is proof the Mexicans were straight up cheating! Jozy’s yellow…he’s a fool for losing his composure at that time. He deserved it.

    • Samuel says:

No way Jose, even Klinsmann and Tab Ramos are gonna have to play. Oh wait, he’s still German. Well, maybe we can cap-tie him.,

  136. Samuel says:

OK, let’s say that MEX pulls it out of a hat and defeats the favorite USA? What then for Klinsi and his Nomads? I think the Gold Cup team should be called up plus Bradley.

    • Bklyn says:

Do you remember the scene in, what, the third “Die Hard” movie? When Bruce Willis is in the elevator with the bad guys, who are dressed as NYPD and have perfect accents. But one guy refers to the elevator as “the lift”? And Bruce just KNOWS?
It’s like that when you refer to Mexico as MEX and the United States as USA.
And when, below, you sometimes refer to the USMNT as “us” and sometimes as “them.”
      Just saying.

      • Samuel says:

Bro, you have it out for me tonight. You following me around or something? I reply to your “USMNT as us and them already.” I don’t watch Hollywood filth. Maybe that’s why I am a bit more realistic than you and see things for what they are and not full of hubris like you seem to see them.

  137. Samuel says:

Ok folks, I am going to bed. Let’s wait and see what kind of magic Klinsi pulls for the MEX game. If he thought the CRI game was the most important, he now knows the next game against MEX has become even more important now. He’s been a guru thus far, so I trust him to turn things around. Even a tie against MEX is a very positive result because it will guarantee us a play-off spot at least. Remember PAN has still to play MEX and HON.

  138. wsfm says:

You are one sorry-ass loser. First saying CR was just lucky, and now you’re blaming the pitch? The US played horribly, Dempsey completely lost, Besler and Gonzalez need a photo of Campbell to see what he looks like, Donovan isolated. That’s just part of the problems. But don’t blame a field that held up incredibly well after the day’s torrential rain… Not like it was snow or anything.

  139. wsfm says:

Damn! Previous reply was for @Zach. Stupid tablet didn’t let me reply dirrectly to one of his hissy fits.
