The cries of “Fuera Chepo” have finally been heard.
Following Friday night’s embarrassing home 2-1 defeat to Honduras in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying, the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) announced their decision to sack Jose Manuel “Chepo” de la Torre, and replace him with Mexico Under-23 coach Luis Fernando Tena.
The decision ends a brutal 2013 for Chepo de la Torre, whose team’s have failed to win a match at Estadio Azteca in this calendar year, looked poor at the Confederations Cup this summer, and played even worse at the Gold Cup, missing out on the final.
Prior to this year, de la Torre was actually producing great results for El Tri, including leading them to the Gold Cup title in 2011 in his first tournament in charge. Mexico breezed through the third round of World Cup qualifying, but once they entered the Hex, they’ve found life much more difficult under Chepo.
Despite the loss at Azteca on Friday, Chepo faced the press, claiming that he wouldn’t be sacked and that the loss was on the players, who would start preparations for their match against the U.S. immediately. However, as it turns out, it’s only the latest public relations snafu from the FMF, to fire a coach hours after he claimed to have a job.
The man taking over for Tuesday’s match against the U.S. Men’s National Team, Luis Fernando Tena, lead El Tri to the Olympics title at the 2012 London Olympics, defeating Brazil in the final. The veteran coach has been an assistant on de la Torre’s staff since 2010 and has managed six different Mexican clubs between 1994 and 2010, including three stints with Cruz Azul, two with Morelia and Chiapas, and one with Club America.
Mexico currently sit in fourth place in the Hex, with a record of 1-5-1, eight points from seven games. The FMF has announced a press conference for 11:30am local (12:30pm ET) to discuss the new head coach of the national team.
What do you think of this news? Do you agree with the decision? Surprised that Chepo was sacked now and not earlier? Do you see Mexico rebounding against the USMNT?
