For the first time in over three decades — since 1979, to be exact — the Cal State-Northridge Matadors have opened a season, 7-0-0.

The No. 5 ranked team in the most recent SBI’s Top 25 poll topped UNLV on Friday, 2-1 to win their seventh straight, but lost their first of the season against No. 6 UCLA, 4-2, with Victor Chavez and Leo Stolz each scoring two goals for the Bruins.

On Sunday, Fairleigh Dickinson sophomore forward Simon Doherty broke a string of just under 557 consecutive shutout minutes by Northwestern’s defense. The Wildcats won the game however, 2-1, to extend their winning streak to six games prior to the start of Big Ten play next weekend.

Elsewhere in college soccer action, Akron defeated Bowling Green 1-0 in Northeast Ohio in the MAC opener for both teams. Senior forward Reinaldo Brenes scored in the 44th minute as the Zips  pushed their NCAA record-setting conference unbeaten streak to 48 matches (45-0-3). Akron also defeated BGSU for its 15th consecutive win against the Falcons.
