A massive rivalry match between the New York Red Bulls and the Philadelphia Union headlines a busy Saturday night of action in Major League Soccer.

The two rivals are meeting for the third time this season after splitting the first two matchups of 2013. Meetings between these two sides are always important, but this rubber match will have an impact on the playoff pictures as second-place New York leads Philadelphia by one point and trails first-place Sporting Kansas City by one point in the tight Eastern Conference.

Later on in the evening, Clint Dempsey could make his first start for the Sounders in his home state of Texas as the streaking Sounders visit the Houston Dynamo. The Sounders have won three straight matches to pull themselves right into the thick of the Western Conference playoff race, and they will face a tough Dynamo side that currently holds the final spot out East.

The spotlight will also be on the Colorado Rapids, who will try to extend their unbeaten run to nine matches. Colorado will host the Vancouver Whitecaps in a battle for second place in the Western Conference, giving new designated player Gabriel Torres an important night to make his potential MLS debut.

Here is a rundown of tonight’s MLS schedule:

7pm – MLS Direct Kick – Montreal Impact vs D.C. United

7:30pm – MLS Direct Kick – New England vs Chicago Fire

7:30pm – MLS Direct Kick – Columbus Crew vs Toronto FC

  1. NATO says:

    DEMPSEY scores tonight. A brace

  2. Brant says:

NASL instead of MLS, but the ref in the Railhawks – Cosmos game is just f’n’ nuts. There’s been about 8 yellow cards and 2 reds (*not* for the same incident), and all before halftime. It’s a little chippy, but the ref is being a total dicknose crotchwaffle and just making a reasonably entertaining game totally unwatchable.

  3. J.A.B. says:

    Let’s go, Sounders!

  4. ThaDeuce says:

Olsen, time to put the young guns in.

    • ThaDeuce says:

Okay, the latest comments first thing, very strange. Just had to pile it on. Why? Has SBI addressed this phenom yet?

  5. ThaDeuce says:

Deleon, off his game this season. Seems like him and Cruz had Opposite Day this season. Hope he turns around next season, just let this be sophomore slump.

  6. Jon says:

James Riley just checked Mapp into a camera. Sort of fitting in Canada, but wrong spott.

He got a yellow, Olsen got sent off in the stuff that followed.

    • ThaDeuce says:

Both coaches sent off, Montreal coach tried to fight a player it seemed. Olsen responded with words. Not sure why Olsen sent off, Montreal coach came onto field. Riley actually won the header, so not even sure why he got a yellow.

  7. ThaDeuce says:

    Conor Doyle scores!

Silva with bradleyesque midfield run and assist.

  8. ThaDeuce says:

Lewis Neal returns from injury!!! Replaces Silva.

  9. ThaDeuce says:

    Bah.

  10. ThaDeuce says:

Divailo burns dejean, destroys Hamdi with the shot.

  11. Smacking says:

Agudelo just scored a ridiculous goal!

    • Rami says:

I have never seen anyone even attempt that. Just nuts

      • Benjamin says:

That was unbelievably brash and creative. As impressive as Ibrahimovic v. England? Not sure, but it is just as ambitious and takes a ridiculous level of skill and touch.

        • SanFran415 says:

          No way!

Ibra against England is a candidate for goal of the decade. He scored a bicycle kick from 40 yards. Just think about that.

          • Benjamin says:

I hear you, that goal will likely never be equalled. But a backheel flick from that far out over a keeper as big as Sean Johnson? Think about that, too.

          • Rami says:

I agree with your point but the balls on Agudelo just to attempt that

  12. Jon says:

    #Swagudelo

  13. papasteve_z says:

Handball on montreal gets no call, then they get a goal. Impact coach storms out of his box onto the field of play going after opposing players, and Ben Olsen gets kicked off the field for being upset about it. EFF this EFFing crap! Sick of it.

  14. SanFran415 says:

Just so we’re clear about this…

Montreal’s coach came onto the field of play to go after PLAYERS on the other team… and Ben Olsen got ejected for being angry about him going at his players? I saw that correctly, right?

  15. RB says:

Well 3 mins in and the Rapids have already not gotten a PK on a Vancouver handball in the box. An auspicious start!

  16. Benjamin says:

A couple of great goals by young American strikers so far. Conor Doyle=clinical. Juan Agudelo=jaw dropping.

  17. Timmytwoshoezzz says:

The finishing in this NYRB-PHI game is embarrassingly awful

    • Pace says:

Really. Hoppenot got saved by that offside call.

      • timmytwoshoezzz says:

yes he did. That was nearly Robbie Findley at Nottingham Forest bad. But the last thirty minutes was just a huge collection of total ineptitude in front of goal by both sides.

    • ThaDeuce says:

What are you talking about?! Agudelo is a Redbuhhh… Oh wait.

  18. Snare says:

Why do NY games that sell out always look like they have a lot of empty seats? Relatively speaking to being a declared sell out.

    • ed - houston says:

no shows, folks arriving late, leaving early… sitting in other parts of the stadium, visual perception (some seats look empty but are not), rivals fans always bringing up this topic etc etc. etc…. this happens here in houston but i am sure it happens in most stadiums too…

  19. RB says:

    Thanks, Edson!

    Thanks, Houston!

  20. YO says:

Guess the Dempsey experiment is not working very well so far.

    • RB says:

Games in hand — that’ll save the Sounders. ‘Cause you know, games in hand — that’s like games you’ve already won but just haven’t gotten the points for yet!

  21. Bean says:

I guess there will not be a write up of the Dynamo match.
