Boyd converts penalty kick in Vienna’s Europa League draw vs. Asteras Tripolis

FUSSBALL - BL, Rapid vs Wacker

By FRANCO PANIZO

Rapid Vienna’s European dreams took a hit when Greek club Asteras Tripolis jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first half of their Europa League match, but Terrence Boyd made sure that result would not stick.

Five minutes after Vienna conceded the opener, Boyd drew and converted an equalizing penalty kick to help his club grab a 1-1 draw on the road in the first leg of their third-round Europa League qualifier vs. Asteras Tripolis on Thursday. The 32nd-minute goal was Boyd’s third of the season across all competitions after he scored twice in last Saturday’s 4-0 rout of Wiener Neustadt in league play.

The goal-scoring performance should help Boyd state his case to U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann, who will soon release what is expected to be a heavy European-based roster for an upcoming friendly against Bosnia & Herzegovina in Sarajevo on Aug. 14.

Boyd and Vienna host Asteras Tripolis in the second leg of their Europa League qualifying series next Thursday.

Here is Boyd’s goal (at the 0:43 mark):

What do you think of Boyd’s latest goal? See him getting called into the U.S. Men’s National Team’s camp vs. Bosnia?

Haha, he needs to work on those. He was a bit lucky there.

    • Erik says:

And given it was his man that scored the goal on the corner, with a really poor defensive effort on his part, I don’t think this is a game to remember for him.

  2. IvanRG says:

The USMNT needs talented strykers like Boyd, he deserves to be called up by Klinsmann for the Bosnia friendly and going forward.

    • Josh D says:

He has been called up. And he has played. And recently, he has been left wanting. The talent is there, as is the effort. But he’s still raw. I’d give him at least another year before he becomes productive at the national level.

Will it be in time for June? I’m not sure.

      • Hogatroge says:

How has he been found wanting? He’s only played like 100 minutes total in something like 8 caps!?

Yes, he sucked against Germany, but he was facing down his home country, and that’s one match. We can forgive him a few nerves.

He’s registered some solid shots on goal in limited minutes and has 2 assists, one a game winner and the other an equalizer in a draw.

  3. Jacknut says:

I see his set peice defense is already up to USMNT standards. And the keeper was really unlucky on the PK.

  4. Madaoua05 says:

Anyone else notice that Boyd got upset with this teammate following the goal? Wonder what happened.

  5. Borussia DortMan says:

I remember Boyd for Dortmund reserves. He had no future at the club, but Coach Klopp helped this young American find a home in Austria. Another success story for the class of the Bundesliga.

Horrible PK execution and needs to work on celebration skills with team mates. After all, it is a team’s sport. He’ll get called by JK. And when the heck is he going to announce the team, the day before the game?
