A season’s worth of stellar performances for Aston Villa has earned Brad Guzan a new contract.

The 28-year-old goalkeeper signed a new four-year contract with Aston Villa on Saturday, keeping him at the English Premier League club until the summer of 2017. Last season’s 36 appearances were the most in one season since Guzan joined the club in July, 2008.

“For me, it’s an honor and a privilege to play for Aston Villa Football Club and to commit my future long-term,” Guzan said in a press release on the team’s website. “I’m overjoyed by it.

“To have this opportunity to commit my future, with the plans and the future being what they are going forward, it’s tremendously exciting and I know that’s not just for me but for everybody, including the fans. This is what Aston Villa Football Club is all about, we’re a very connected and very committed group and we want to strive to be the best we can possibly be going forward. What we’re building here as a Club, what the manager is building could be very special,” Guzan said.

Last season at Aston Villa, Guzan started all but two games, making 114 saves while helping the club to 10 wins and 11 draws, earning him Player of the Year status from the team. Guzan also starred for the United States Men’s National Team, taking over the No. 1 role in goal when Tim Howard was down to earn a win against Costa Rica and a draw at Mexico, recording a clean sheet in both games.

“Brad has been exceptional for the club, really fantastic on and off the pitch,” manager Paul Lambert said on Aston Villa’s website. “He’s always bubbly around the place and a really solid character. He’s a good guy as well which is really important. Overall, he’s a credit to the club.”

What do you think of this news? Did you expect Guzan to stay at Villa? Do you see him guiding Villa back to a top-10 finish?

Why is it always so hard to find out how much money for these contracts?

This strikes me as a really big deal in the long run. Am I wrong to read this as Guzan starting for a Prem League team for the next few years?

He’s solid. It’s well earned. Talk about waiting your turn and not bitching abut the bench. He sat for what, 4 seasons? Class act all the way.

Congratulations, Brad, and keep up the good work.

Man, it is fun watching his career unfold. I can remember watching Ronnie O’Brien zip goals past him in one of the many 5-nil drubbings he suffered with Chivas USA 1.0 (which is very much like the 2.0 version) and you could still see that the guy had mad potential.

Proud of you, Brad. Keep chugging along, sir, and you could be in the nets for someone bigger playing in bigger games in a year or two. Good luck.
