USA vs. Honduras: SBI Live Match Commentary

By IVES GALARCEP

SANDY, Utah– A perfect June is within grasp for the U.S. Men’s National Team as they face Honduras tonight (9pm, ESPN) in the third of three World Cup qualifiers this month.

The U.S. is riding a four-match unbeaten streak in qualifying, including recent wins in Jamaica and vs. Panama that have helped the Americans top the qualifying group. A win tonight at Rio Tinto Stadium could push the Americans four points clear of the entire group (depending on the result of tonight’s Costa Rica-Honduras match).

Honduras enters the match missing several key players, including regular centerbacks Victor Bernardez and Maynor Figueroa, but the Catrachos will still have a solid lineup, with Roger Espinoza and Mario Martinez among the key players who also featured in the February win over the U.S. in San Pedro Sula.

SBI will be providing live commentary on tonight’s match so please feel free to follow along with the action here. As always, you are welcome to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.

Enjoy the action (Tonight’s commentary is after the jump):

  1. Francois says:

Don’t really like the lineup that much. I really wish Castillo would have started with FJ in front of him. Oh well, we should still get the 3 points.

    • Snack Time says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Castillo later on at LB, and pushing Fabian up when Eddie tires

    • TomG says:

disappointed. I think the team has better flow and is more organized with FJ on the wing and Cam in the middle.

      • chris_thebassplayer says:

I agree, plus the way things are going Cameron would be much more dangerous on set pieces…which is where we’re going to be come the last 10 minutes, hoofing it in and crashing the box.

  2. Brian S. says:

I think this is the best lineup available. Props to JK for moving Fabian to LB

    • Joe says:

I agree with you. And after watching Zusi and EJ switching through the course of the first 45 makes me like this lineup even more.

  3. Byrdman says:

Agree. Really hoped to see Castillo and Fj on the left. But in JK I trust.

    • Byrdman says:

      Agreed with Francois sorry.

      • DCUffda! says:

What “we” learned in 10 days
        1. jones is a good, professional player but it would seem Bradley Cameron is currently the more dangerous combo on off.
        2. The front line is better when FJ is playing LW. Not that he eventually shouldn’t be at LB if we can find a similarly skillful wing to play in front of him.
        3. Brad Evans did a really admirable job these last 4 games, but he doesn’t look like the long term solution. Not quite quick enough and not effective enough on O. His heroic goal not withstanding.
        4. Josey has looked awesome these last 4 games.

  4. Jerome Mestman says:

    stream anyone?

  5. David M says:

Cameron didn’t deserve to be relegated to the bench. Is today the day for Jones to finally get his red card?

    • Old School says:

      Relax and stop that garbage.

I’ll never understand why so many Soccer Mom’s freak out over his physical play. How many red cards does he have for that Nats so far? For his club, for that matter?

      Yea, stop the nonsense.

    • Joe says:

Even before his yellow card I was thinking Jones won’t have the fitness to play 90. Cameron is a great option off the bench. I’m slowly moving toward the “In JK we trust.”, bunch.

  6. Haddo says:

    Najar starting for Honduras

  7. elgringorico says:

Ahh so Najar IS playing. I am so confused.

  8. Old School says:

Are we nearing a point where JK may advise a player on a yellow to intentionally pick up another one when factoring our upcoming match opponents in qualifying?

    • Paul Thomas says:

It would be better to have everyone take a yellow at once and send a B side to Costa Rica (a game we’re somewhat likely to lose anyway) than to keep having one or two guys suspended every game.

Probably wishful thinking though. I mean, it’s hard to intentionally pick up a yellow without risking a red, so unless the game is 4-0 or something, I can’t see this happening.

      • wfrw07 says:

It really isn’t that hard to get a yellow without a red. Pick up the ball in the center of the field.

  9. martin says:

Univision just compared Chicharito to Neymar… really?

  10. ThaDeuce says:

Besides Cameron for jones, that was my projected line up.

  12. john says:

RIO here we come. ;) nuff said.

  13. john says:

I still find it incredible that Rio is almost here. It seems like only yesterday Algeria and Donovan’s wonder goal happened.

  14. Michael F. SBI Mafia Original says:

  15. Mig says:

ESPN should prevent Lalas from talking about Mexico; he is too biased, too hateful to provide useful commentary. And that is not hating on him but he really can’t assess El Tri in anything resembling objectivity

  16. Mig says:

ESPN should prevent Lalas from talking about Mexico; he is too biased, too hateful to provide useful commentary. And that is not hating on him but he really can’t a$$e$$ El Tri in anything resembling objectivity

    • Old School says:

Even better Mig, let’s stop the fair and balanced act and not even talk about Mexico. They aren’t even playing tonight.

For some reason now, every time the US plays, we HAVE to talk about Mexico, have a Mexican reporter or a commentator like Jorge Ramos.

What’s amusing? The reverse is not the same. When Mexico plays, there isn’t: an entire segment dedicated to the US, a US reporter or a pro-US commentator on the set.

      • Mig says:

Old School, stop making me agree with you. I hate when that happens.

As we discussed the other night, I love Mexico and hate their soccer. So yeah, why do we even need to have a feature tonight?

        Cheers!

      • TomG says:

It’s bc ESPN has the Mexico rights.

  17. Mig says:

They keep harping on the pitch being so nice. Our wins have come on crappy fields in the hex (Denver, Jamaica, Seattle). Why would we be happy about a great surface?

And yes, I realize that sounds inflammatory but it is fair, the US has thrived on bad fields in the hex so far.

    • Old School says:

I don’t think the fields had anything to do with our performances, for better or worse.

      • Mig says:

Maybe, maybe not. Sure. But the broadcasters were implying it benefited the US. Hmm. Maybe, maybe not.

  18. TomG says:

Rare poor ball by MB there

  19. TomG says:

Very poor defending by EJ and JJ yields a set piece Ina very dangerous area.

  20. TomG says:

Deuce just misses twice in rapid succession. FJ looking dangerous

  21. TomG says:

    Great pressure by Zusi

  22. YesItsNate says:

I’m sure ESPN will be happy they caught the “USA ain’t nothing to F*** with” chants in the fifth minute.

  23. Dont Care says:

Should’ve started Cameron. Jones already f*ckin up

  24. TomG says:

MB weaving through defenders like a champ!

  25. chris_thebassplayer says:

Still early but Jones is rusty, needs to find the game…in a good way.

  26. TomG says:

Awful turnover by OG, stupid yellow by JJ giving a spot kick in an absolutely deadly area.

  27. ThaDeuce says:

I still think Cameron > Gonzo

  28. Edwin in LA says:

Is anyone having trouble getting the Cover it Live window to finish opening up? I have a gray background and no countdown clock or comments slightly behind the grey like usual?

  29. JuanP says:

Nil Nil still. GO USA link to soccerbyives.net

  30. TomG says:

Ohhhhhhhh, EJ. Have to be just a bit better there

  31. petedx says:

Dempsey is the man, horrible service from Zusi on crosses so far so he shows him what is what.

  32. deepvalue says:

Fabian getting off to a good start. Great to see.

  33. meowmix says:

Deuce?! How did you miss that?!

  34. Citronomics says:

Great chance for EJ from FJ. And as I write looks like Deuce misses a header chance. Glad to see more incisive possession from the US in the last few mins.

  35. Increase says:

What position is EJ playing…. I turned on the game a bit late and he is just all over the place… and not in a good way. (One good shot though.)

    • Mig says:

He is playing left attack but after corners or free kicks from the left, he ends up on the right center because Zusi moves over. He’s doing pretty well, I think

    • TomG says:

He and EJ are switching wings back and forth.

  36. TomG says:

Man, Evans is slow. How did he not catch up to that ball?

  37. TomG says:

    Terrible first touch by EJ

  38. ThatKidNandez says:

Zusi’s crossing is god awful! Klinnsman could have called up Landon or Bedoya! Instead he calls up beckerman… COME ON MAN!

  39. PAQuaker says:

    stream needed please

  40. chris_thebassplayer says:

We need to wake up…EJ, Jones, Deuce…need to pick it up…our movement off the ball and tempo are poor…Deuce dropping way too deep into midfield…Jozy needs him much closer…overall too slow and sleepy, exactly what Honduras wants…

  41. Mig says:

Why must our supporters be Outlaws? Do they break laws?

And if I guy is going to be subbed out because of injury, it’s in rather bad form to boo him for time wasting when it’s the f’n 32nd minute.

    • john says:

You’d have to ask them yourselves why they would name, and do, such things as that. otherwise you just gotta go with it.

  42. ThatKidNandez says:

Castillo and Corona have to get in to this game they need qualifier experience!

    • Dont Care says:

Both shouldnt be on the World cup squad so it doesnt really matter would rather get the W

  43. Mig says:

Holy crap our MF is playing well through the middle. That includes Dempsey dropping deep and Zusi and Eddie cutting in. Jones and Bradley are doing well swapping responsibilities.

  44. meowmix says:

Deuces touch is just off tonight

  45. Joamiq says:

Cramps? Water break? Loading up on fluids? That was intentional, right?

  46. PAQuaker says:

anyone have a stream that actually works?

  47. john says:

I must say the the word, to describe the Nats, right now seems to be “stifled”.

  48. YO says:

Dempsey and Jones lost. Enough of the shor corners already.

  49. john says:

O.o wtf is Gonzales doing? Having another derp moment????

  50. petedx says:

So was Gonzalez just going to let him dribble that all the way to goal?

  51. ed - houston says:

Zusi on the left and EJ on the right is not working out at all

  52. Mig says:

Ian In-the-Darke trying to blame Gonalez for that shooting opportunity when OG ran his channel after somebody ELSE’s turnover. . Have another pint, Ian.

    • Pete says:

Keller just gave Omar credit for allowing Howard to maintain a good angle on that play. Good to hear a goalie’s perspective on that rather than Twellman’s or Darke’s opinion.

    • Nate Dollars says:

the breakaway was due to the turnover. gonzo did not step up to najar, therefore he is responsible for the shooting opportunity.

however, i think gonzo played smart there. najar was clearly looking to make the easy p@ss, and by gonzo holding the center of the field, he forced najar to take the shot early.

      • Mig says:

Yeah, my point was mostly that stupid announcers get some bone of contention between their teeth and will never let it go. Gonzo is the whipping boy of choice so they will work that ad nauseum.

        • Nate Dollars says:

agreed, most announcers are huge frontrunners, which is why i can appreciate lalas, even if i think he can be a moron: i think he really believes what he says.

  53. elgringorico says:

Taylor Twellman is particularly annoying tonight.

  54. ed - houston says:

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOO , at the half

  55. john says:

Bring on Bald,Chub, and Ginger!! XD

  56. Haddo says:

Total speculation but i think Clint is battling a flu or something. He just looks off, his game and his mannerisms.

  57. Vic says:

Would like to see Castillo at LM in the second half. Could really use him to expand the field.

    • ThatKidNandez says:

Corona on the right would also get the pistons punching again. Also castillos speed would help open up space!

  58. chris_thebassplayer says:

We’re going to have to do this old school…crash the box and steal a set piece goal…

Except for Fab’s overlaps, we’re getting outplayed on the flanks…I wonder if we see Castillo brought in and Fab moved to mid…the middle is jammed and Deuce is out of sorts… we need much better flank play to get crosses in or at least generate corners.

  59. Joamiq says:

I thought Bradley was easily our best player in the first half, but on another site I’m commenting on, the consensus seems to be that he was poor. I thought he was all over the middle, controlling the game, creating attacks that were wasted by Zusi, both Johnsons, Jozy. I think he’s flashed some incredible quality tonight. He turned the ball over a couple of times, but Jozy and the backline have had some terrible giveaways, and I don’t understand why Bradley is getting the blame. Am I crazy?

  60. Vic says:

Can someone confirm this, I heard the first 25,000 fans that attend tonight get a free sleeping pill?

  61. chg says:

Besides the US and Mexico, which teams would actually try to play in Brazil rather than park 10 men and embarrass CONCACAF?

  62. YO says:

Ok, JK needs to shake up about know. Minus that last combination EJ not a factor, this where JK needs to show his coaching savvy.

  63. Citronomics says:

JJ cleans up his giveaway at least.

  64. ed - houston says:

    EJ the diver

  65. Benny says:

Does the U.S. get any breaks in the penalty area. Come on ref!!!

  66. TomG says:

Welcome to random ref decisions theatre.

  67. ed - houston says:

this Sandy crowd is LAME, and are the chanting the YSAH on Hon goal kicks?

    • petedx says:

They are good at throwing streamers on the field, which is about my least favourite thing ever.

    • Mig says:

For all the accolades given the Seattle crowd, we were remarking in the first half while at 0-0 that the Clink was a morgue. I am not a big fan of having US games in these small anglo-centric stadia. I’ll take NY, LA, Chitown, Miami for the atmosphere.

      • Increase says:

I hate it when people use the term Anglo. Who is an Anglo? There used to be plenty of Angles and then they met some Saxons but I don’t know what a Anglo is. Do you mean people of European decent?
        I personally am Frankish. So….

The point I am making is… don’t bring up ethnicity. Regions and cultures are fine. Leave race out of this.

        • Nate Dollars says:

‘Do you mean people of European decent?’

the ‘anglo-’ prefix refers to english descent or english culture. i think mig is just talking about white people in general, though.

  68. TomG says:

EJ looks very disengaged tonight. He was wandering around looking completely disinterested as everyone is fighting for the ball in the box. When the ball does bounce to him, he pops up an unmarked, point blank opportunity.

    • Increase says:

I agree. I was asking what position he was in earlier. I honestly couldn’t tell. He did a bit of ball watching on one rebound too.

  69. TomG says:

Deuce is trying, but he’s just off tonight.

  70. Benny says:

    Keep the ball down!!

  71. Citronomics says:

Just cr$p. Can’t say the lads haven’t had their chances. Mig – maybe your boy Ian D will console us with a cliche. Couldn’t resist.

  72. Benny says:

The U.S, should get more great chances here. They should finish one of them.

  73. TomG says:

    Jooooooozyyyyy!!!!!

  74. Benny says:

    That’s it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! great goal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  75. petedx says:

wow that was a Klinsman wet dream of a goal

  76. chris_thebassplayer says:

We better start getting a couple more players in the box… Jozy and Deuce need to stay high…Cameron behind MB would work like a charm right now. It would allow MB to push upfield.

  77. Leo says:

    One for the history books.

  78. TomG says:

    They call me Mr. Clinical!!

  79. TomG says:

I think Jozy also started that with a dummy, if I’m not mistaken.

  80. TomG says:

Zusi has been so much better than EJ, why take him off?

  81. TomG says:

    Jozy dominating the game now

  82. TomG says:

Nice run by Brad, but he probably should have passed it sooner.

  83. Benny says:

Great tackle by Besler in the box.

    • Mig says:

Besler was beaten if the striker took the touch right. After the lousy touch, it was a good recovery by Besler to cover for his mistake.

  84. Benny says:

    Don’t go to sleep Omar

  85. petedx says:

    Brad Davis looking lively

  86. TomG says:

Big mistake by Evans there getting caught but hstling nicely to recover.

  87. chris_thebassplayer says:

Cameron looking very tidy with the ball again…great to see.

  88. TomG says:

Great flick on header by Jozy to Deuce for the chance. He’s usually not great at those.

  89. petedx says:

Don’t see a goal coming out of the Costa Rica and Panama game looks like they are playing in quite the downpour

  90. Benny says:

    possession boys possession.

  91. Chupacabra says:

This ref is a bitter little ugly scarfaced man from a p1sspot country.

  92. Benny says:

Free kick and that should to it.

  93. Benny says:

Solid win and should have had more than 1 goal.

  94. ed - houston says:

JK made it harder than it really was. 5 pts clear.

  95. TomG says:

Good win. We created chances and limited opposing chances. We did not possess the ball and have the flow that I’d like to see, but overall, it was good. I still think that EJ and JJ on the field together disrupts the flow too much. Neither of them are good possession players.

  96. deepvalue says:

Zusi best player on field tonight. Fabian’s best game of this stretch.

    • TomG says:

I’d say Zusi, Altidore, Besler and FJ probably had the best matches. You could always add MB to that mix, and he was great as usual, but not as efficient as he usually is.

      • chris_thebassplayer says:

I have to go with MB, without him in the middle we’re a complete mess in this game. I think playing with JJ hinders what he can get done, especially up field. Cameron/MB looked good again.

  97. Paul says:

Another game of trench warfare in the Hex. It isn’t pretty, but we get 9 points in 3 games, so that’s something to cheer about.

No one should earn the honor of MOTM in this game, but someone has to do it. I’m going with Besler. Good effective work on the back line tonight.

  98. petedx says:

On to that horrible stadium in Costa Rica…

  99. divers suck says:

It’s a shame that the turf at Rio Tinto can’t be placed on the Clink and no Mariners game. A full Clink would be the ultimate fortress for the NATS…Sorry Salt Lake City but the crowd was kind of lame, needing the prodding of Clint Dempsey to get going. The “We are Going to Brazil” at the end was cool though…..

  100. byrdman says:

When the game is allowed to be played as a slug fest with consistent fouling by the same players, without any warnings or cards, that takes away the advantage of the more skillful team. We have done that for years. Tonight Honduras tried to do that to us, and it worked for a long time. The difference between now and years past when we were bunkered against, is that we have some guys with some real skill and ability to finish.

I thought we had our moments of good flow and opportunities to put the ball in the net. If we finish a couple of those headers, maybe we aren’t talking about how bad the flow was, instead discussing a 3-0 win. Curious to see the stats for passing percentage, possession, and chances.

Great win!! We are going to Brazil!!
