Landon Donovan’s sparkling form in Major League Soccer hasn’t gone unnoticed.

United States Men’s National Team manager Jurgen Klinsmann, who left the Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder off his June World Cup qualifying roster, included Donovan on a provisional list of 35 players that could be chosen for the 2013 Gold Cup.

Also set for a potential recall to the national team are defenders Carlos Bocanegra and Oguchi Onyewu, once permanent fixtures in the side but injuries and lack of playing time has left them out of the team. Onyewu has not been called in since June of last year, while Bocanegra has been out of the squad since the 2-1 defeat to Honduras, where he was left on the substitutes bench.

Young forwards Bobby Wood and Jack McInerney have been included as well and if selected for the final 23-man squad, would be in line to make their first senior appearances for their nation. In addition, if he appears in a Gold Cup match, midfielder Mikkel “Mix” Diskerud would be permanently cap-tied to the U.S.

Here is the provisional USMNT Gold Cup roster:

GOALKEEPERS- Bill Hamid, Sean Johnson, Nick Rimando, Tally Hall

DEFENDERS- Carlos Bocanegra, Oguchi Onyewu, Omar Gonzalez, Matt Besler, Clarence Goodson, Edgar Castillo, DaMarcus Beasley, Michael Parkhurst, Corey Ashe, Tony Beltran, Michael Orozco

MIDFIELDERS- Kyle Beckerman, Graham Zusi, Brek Shea, Joe Corona, Stuart Holden, Brad Davis, Alejandro Bedoya, Mikkel Diskerud, Brad Evans, Josh Gatt, Benny Feilhaber, Eddie Johnson, Jose Torres

FORWARDS- Will Bruin, Herculez Gomez, Landon Donovan, Alan Gordon, Jack McInerney, Chris Wondolowski, Bobby Wood

What do you think of the squad? Excited to see Donovan back? Did any of the selections surprise you? Who do you think should have been included on the list?

  1. Mac says:

when does Fagundez get a call up? or is he just heading straight for Uruguay?

    • SanFran415 says:

Never played a single game at any level for the US and his father was a big fan favorite goalkeeper in the Urugyuan first division.

      • Freegle says:

I was under the impression he was no eligible. He’s not a citizen and would have to wait another 3-5 years before getting citizenship.

      • AC says:

He played in the lower youth levels of the USA, as per MLS website

        • 2tone says:

Fagundez is not a US citizen. He may have trained with the youth teams in the past, but he was never able to actually play in any games.

    • Bobb says:

He’s not a US citizen, nor does he even have a green card. Which means he’s like 6-8 years out from “getting a call up” barring some sort of special legislation. Basically pray that Fagundez stays in MLS and Uruguay ignore him (he would be cap tied by any appearance as he’s not a dual citizen).

      • If you’re not a dual citizen at the time of a friendly call-up are you cap tied? So he couldn’t get citizenship after his first cap and use a one-time switch? Not saying your wrong or that it would be a bad rule if true, just that the rules are confusing.

        • Joe+G says:

If you are not a dual citizen by the time of a FIFA *competition*, you are limited to the citizenship(s) you held at that time.

If he played in a youth or full friendly for Uruguay (and he has played a U20 friendly or two), then he can make the change without a “one time switch.” The one time switch is only needed if you play a competition (U17 or U20 WC qualifying primarily) AND you held another citizenship at the time of that competition.

Fabian Johnson had to file a one time switch because he played in UEFA U21 competition. Danny Williams never played in an official competition, so he didn’t have to file a switch.

    • Eric W says:

      He’s going for Uruguay.

    • slowleftarm says:

Guy moved here when he was 5 and learned his soccer here but instead we’re going to have call up a bunch of Germans with no connection to the US. Sucks.

      • jake says:

No connection other than half of their parents and many relatives, visits, and time spent living in the states. Oh… and wanting to represent the US. But none other than that.

        • Luis says:

Let’s keep it real. Only German- American guys who proudly put on the USA jersey are Boyd and maybe J Jones. The other dudes just do it cuz they wouldn’t get a shot with German Nat team. eh hem Timmy Chandler.

  2. Josh D says:

Very diverse and strong roster! I’m especially happy to see Bobby Wood there; another, like Holden, who has battled through injuries. Hope to see Mix earn a few starts. At least this roster boasts a lot of attack.

    Noticeable absences: Boyd and Agudelo.

    • Josh D says:

Two other notes: Seems like Klinsi wants to keep the defense together as long as possible, which is good. They need consistent time together.

      Starting XI:

      ——————–Rimando—————–
      Parkhurst–Gonzo–Besler—-Castillo
      —————–Beckerman—————
      ——–Holden————-Mix————
      Donovan—–McInerney——Johnson

      • Nick4235 says:

        No Beckerman. Seriously.

        • Drew says:

He’s still better than most, but I agree that we’ve seen enough of him and Wondo… Prefer to see some young guys like Boyd and even Jozy needs to put some goals in with a US jersey on.

        • divers suck says:

If Cuba would ever give in and let Osvaldo Alonso go, Beckerman would likely never be in the NAT mix again. It’s a shame that a player of his talent has no country to represent.

          • Dave says:

While I’d love to see him suit up for our Nats, the issue is not with Cuba and whether or not they’d be willing to release him in some way. The issue is with FIFA and whether or not they’d be willing to grant him an exception to switch affiliations because he is already officially cap-tied to Cuba.

          • Air Jordanz says:

Alonso is not the international caliber DM we need, and isn’t exactly young. When Mo Edu and Danny Williams are on their game, they are superior. The problem is, it’s a gamble whenever one of those guys gets a start.

Alfredo Morales is a quality young DM option… It’s a shame he is sorting out a move to a new club since he would be perfect for this tourney.

          • Dave says:

To be clear, I’m not entirely correct. Just read the rule again. Cuba does have some control, but only to the extent that they’d have to revoke his citizenship “against his will” (not true) and/or “without his consent” (also not true). He would then have to request a switch via FIFA, which could ultimately be denied anyway. Tricky wording; not sure how they’d rule on that.

            • divers suck says:

Dave, I think Alonso is worried about any repercussions to his family in Cuba if he pursues this any further.
Air Jordanz, Alonso most certainly IS international caliber when compared to Beckerman, Mo Edu and Danny Williams and still has many years left in his prime at 27 years old!

              • drew11 says:

Agreed. Doesn’t make sense poor mouth Ozzie and then pump a guy like Morales who has never done anything. Morales is 23 which is hardly young in soccer terms.

      • Lost in Space says:

While I do hope that we can keep the Defense together through the GC….I find it hard to believe that MLS clubs are going to allow for some of their best players (Besler, Gonzalez, EJ, Davis, etc….) to basically miss 6-7 weeks with the National Team. If they do I’d be very happy to see Gonzo & Besler get an extended amount of time together….but really hope that Davis, Evans, Gordon, and many of the other crap players are not around for the GC. Give younger and (IMHO) better players like Mixx, Bedoya, Gatt, shots.

        • keithbabs79 says:

Who cares what MLS thinks? Us performing well on an international stage will drive more money in their direction. Besides, all the new expansions scream cash grab over developmental progression.

      • APK says:

        Boring… and toast too.

      • Westin says:

I agree, it’s pointless to see Beckerman on the roster again. And honestly, how is Castillo even getting a sniff of the national team roster. Danny Williams needs to get healthy and fit and should start over beckerman in a heart beat and giver Jones a run for the starting spot, him and bradley would be our strongest option at midfield in the near future

    • nick says:

guessing Boyd stays on the WCQ team now. Overall I definitely agree with the XI you have, very excited for the summer!

    • Loche Achles says:

D staying together is a must. Castillo hopefully can get some double duty. He deserves it after a monster year. He’s literally improved 2x since his last US call-up. Like a whole new player.

      ————-Macaroni————-
      EJ—–Mixx and Match—Donovan
      ——–Holden—–Torres——–
      Castillo—Bes—Gonzo—RB

      Sub: Corona for Mix
      Wood for EJ
      Gatt for Donovan
      etc. etc.

      • Micah says:

        Who Macaroni?

      • Westin says:

        Monster year for club, yes

he is not national team caliber and get destroyed at outside back at the national level, watch the last 15 of Germany again. he could have given up 4-5 goals in 15 minutes instead of just 2.

    • Weston John says:

Very surprised that Agudelo is not on the roster….he has looked good for New England recently and GC would have been a great way to get him back in the fold.

As to your starting XI…I think Bedoya starts ahead of Holden at this point in time, but Holden should get minutes. Otherwise, I like it.

      • Josh D says:

Bedoya has been a winger or striker. So he and Holden shouldn’t fight for a position.

Agudelo, I can only assume is poised for a transfer.

Another I forgot: Nguyen. I wanted to see him too.

      • Eurosnob says:

I agree that it is odd not to see Agudelo. Morales is another player who should have gotten a call up.

        • Air Jordanz says:

Morales is leaving Hertha and will need the time to integrate into his new team.

I’d put money on the fact that Morales makes it onto the provisional WC roster in the next 8 months.

      • Westin says:

Agreed, would have liked to see Agudelo on the roster. Don’t think Boyd should get a sniff again any time soon.

  3. dude says:

Replace Brad Evans with Connor O’Brien, and we’ve got a deal. Don’t know why he keeps getting call ups- he’s not even good enough to be a utility player.

    • swoopy says:

Sounders fan here, but I totally agree with you.

    • Dan says:

agreed, Evans is mediocre at best. If we are going to take a Sounders CM i’d prefer to see what Alonso can do. Although we are pretty stacked at defensive mids already

      • scott47a says:

unforunately Cuba is likely never going to release Alonso, and without their permission he can never play for USA, despite the fact he is now a citizen.

        • Neruda says:

I was wondering about Alonso. He could be be good for the US because he’s fearless in breaking up attacks like J Jones but unlike Jones he stays at “home” in his position and goes forward at the right times. Cuba is never going to cooperate so FIFA will have to break their own rules in order for him to be free from Cuba. That must be frustrating for Alonso.

        • Dave says:

Again, the issue is not with Cuba, guys. Ozzie Alonso is officially cap-tied to Cuba, meaning that he is not eligible for the one-time switch per FIFA rules. Barring FIFA granting him an exception as a result of political refugee status, or something of the like, he will not be playing for the U.S. or anyone else but Cuba anytime soon.

    • MIKE R says:

replace Evans with anyone. Also time to stop calling up Hitchhiker Kai. Better younger options.

      Sadly no Johnnsen or Brooks.

Alan Gordon ? Really? we have a scary lack of forward options here

  4. SanFran415 says:

    Young folk!

    • OPMG says:

Not enough of them, IMO. We know what a lot of these guys are already. No George John is a surprise, but we will get a look at new attacking options which will be nice.

  5. LBC203 says:

Landon Donovan’s “sparkling” form? LOL! I guess one must call his form of late something! However, I still don’t think he’s 100% back, but I’m glad he will be looked at in the Gold Cup!

  6. Wess says:

I was hoping to see Magee. He deserves it more than Alan Gordon.

    • BigBirdLenny says:

Yeah, Gordon hasn’t really been healthy yet. From a “let’s win some games” perspective, it’s definitely good to have someone like Gordon in the mix. I suppose that’s why it’s a provisional roster. I’d really like to see Agudelo in the lone striker role with McInerney and Donovan out wide (or you can put Agudelo out wide with McInerney as lone striker)

      • Wess says:

Yea I could see that working. I doubt Gordon will even make the final roster anyways

      • zztoppppp says:

Not saying it is impossible, but I don’t think McInerney could play out wide, doesn’t seem athletic enough. He would be best used in the box at all times.

        • mike says:

McInerney sucks can only play kick and run

        • Yea, he plays out-wide for the Union every now and then, but his best play is definitely right in front of the goal. As they’ve sorted it out recently Le Toux’s on the wing, Casey’s withdrawn and McInerney is playing on the backline inside the box.

      • sony says:

Gordon big lol he is a piece of sh******

      • D-Real says:

I didn’t disagree with Gordon’s inclusion the previous time JK called him because he showed how vital a role he played for his team, but this ones a head scratcher to me. He called a guy that has had 3 shots on goal this year, has had disciplinary problems, and hasn’t established any kind of form. Won’t matter once the final roster comes out, I’d just like to seem Magee rewarded for a few years worth of stellar play.

    • Gary Page says:

And I will make my usual plea to give Dax McCarty a look. He’s been hurt lately, but is now recovered and has already scored 2 goals this season which is pretty unusual for him since he is either playing defensive mid or distributing the ball. Since we know about Beckerman, McCarty should be brought in instead to see how well he does.

  7. James says:

Could you imagine JackMac, with his off the ball movement and sense and poaching skill, receiving balls from Donovan!?!?
He could be the golden boot winner in the GC.

    • BigBirdLenny says:

      This times >9000

    • beachbum says:

I like JM moves, relentless, fast, looking for creases

    • AcidBurn says:

      The American Chicharito…

    • Jack says:

This times infinity. When jack gets great service he can put the ball in the back of the net…a lot! Haha I am actually really looking forward to this tournament. But I would’ve liked to see Kennedy Magee o brien okugo or gyau on this roster too

    • Jesse D says:

I hope you are right. I haven’t seen him play much. Once live and maybe twice on TV. My impression so far is he is a young Wondolowski or Brian Ching. Maybe he is better, perhaps a Brian McBride. That would be the high end of what we could hope for out of him. I’m really looking forward to seeing how he does with a USA jersey and service from the likes of LD.

      • Let’s back down from the Brian McBride talk, he plays a lot like Wondolowski but he doesn’t play as big as Ching. When people call Jack the American Chicharito it’s because they both have similar skill-sets. Jack is the best poacher in MLS and he’s not as old or played-out as Wondo.

  8. Jason says:

So, Carlos AND Bocanegra are on the roster? Nice!

  9. boosted335 says:

Were not putting our best foot forward defensively if George John is not competing for a starting spot. Of course we should do well in THIS tournament with what we have but our WC chances are hurt by having questions marks at CB instead of at least one explanation point.

  10. Socom 2 says:

Klinsmann is a chump and no longer should be a coach

Agudelo, Wooten, G John, Gyau, Morales, Adu, Lichaj, S Clark

These players are not included that could even be a starting roster ?????

    F**K Klinsmann

    • SanFran415 says:

      A joke, right?

Your “starting roster” would probably lose by 5 or 6 to the starting roster of the XI on the roster.

      • swoopy says:

Maybe Socom2 is a Belize fan?

      • Benny says:

I don’t think he is joking. I do think a few players he mentioned should be on the roster..Adu has not played much but when he has, he has played well as other have on his list.

    • Loche Achles says:

      Blaise.

I’ll give you Morales and Lichaj. But, there really isn’t too much else to debate. This is a very diverse roster full of young guys and veterans because winning this actually means something now.

Adu? Gyau? No way they take Adu away in the middle of trying to get in with his coach at the season top. Gyau is in club limbo and hasn’t been good all year, period, barely plays. Delo just got to a new club and was injured. He needs to stay established there.

I don’t think am argument can be made for any of the others taking another slot from the other listed “new guys” since its a half vet/ half youngbloods squad.

    • TomG says:

Not a JK fan, but I like the roster. Agudelo is coming off of an injury, Wooten, Gyau, Morales, and Lichaj are deep into their offseasons, Adu just began playing and he’s only getting 10 minutes per.

Among the extra possibilities, I like the Gatt, Mixx, Bedoya, LD, JackMac, and Wood selections.

      • Freegle says:

Can’t use the deep into offseason excuse with onyewu, shea and wood on this list.

      • Benny says:

I agree with you but it does not matter that Adu has only played for 10 minutes per game for his side in Brazil, bring him in anyway. There are players who are not 100% physically fit or have not played much for their respective teams who are on the current roster now. Let’s see what Adu can do. I just think Adu is not on klinsi’s radar and that’s it. Adu is probably going to have to tear it up in Brazil before he gets a call up if ever.

    • bryan says:

Agudelo and Morales are surprises, they really are. they are big U-23 players who got a stretch of games there. given they missed out on the Olympics, i’m surprised they were left off. Gyau just didn’t get enough PT, which is too bad. Same can be said of Adu.

Wooten absolutely did enough to be called up, but has never been a part of a US team.

Lichaj, though, should be on a 35 man roster, no doubt.

    • Gary Page says:

I don’t share your anger our all your choices, but I was struck by Lichaj’s absence. I figure that anyone who is good enough to start in the EPL, at least occasionally, is worth a look for the national team. That means Spector could/should have been called in, too.

    • SD says:

i half agree with you but remember
lichaj will be at a new team this summer not at villa so he should start preseason with that team

morales just signed with a new team, better to start preseason

agudelo was hurt and now with a new team, though i think he should have been called bc he has chemistry with the young guys, esp mix

would’ve like to have seen wooten and gyau

adu is at a new team, that just changed coach, last thing he should do is leave for one month

gjohn has been hurt or not playing well….

      can’t speak about clark

i actually would’ve liked to have seen nguyen but he plays for a not so great team…..

      • Rami says:

Not sure why anyones surprised, Klinsmann said if your euro based and not in the WCQ’s and in your offseason you would not make the GC. Lichaj is in that category

        • Nate Dollars says:

um, gooch and boca are in that category too. maybe that’s why people are surprised?

  11. zztoppppp says:

I was surprised to see no Agudelo, but I’m okay with that. I would much rather see Bruin and McInerney get the nod over him.

    Starting XI:
    ————-McInerney————–
    Zusi——–Diskerud—–Donovan
    ——–Bedoya—Holden———-
    Castillo-Besler-Gonzalez-Orozco
    ————–Rimando————–

    • TomG says:

Possible fitness and form concerns for JuanAg, coming off an injury. No worries on that front with Bruin and Mac.

  12. The Imperative Voice says:

GK: I’m not a fan of the U23 GKs but it’s solid enough a bunch I won’t complain.
D: Gooch and Goodson have committed gaffes that should see them out of the pool. I also don’t think I’d pick Ashe, Beltran, or Parkhurst based on talent.
M: No Brad Evans, demonstrated mediocrity.
F: No Wondo, demonstrated mediocrity. Wood seems to be picked based on German club affiliation when there are a list of Austro-German forwards with stronger CVs.

Whom I’d suggest: Agudelo, Boyd, Brooks, Chandler, Cunningham, Davies, Edu, Garza, Gyau, Lichaj, Morales, Simek.

    • The Imperative Voice says:

Wooten also. I don’t understand how Wood jumps queue. Three goals in B.2?

      • louis z says:

In my opinion Wooten had an excellent season even playing as a RW. Too bad we can’t see him against his MLS counterparts and see where he stacks up.

    • Loche Achles says:

Agudelo – needing time to get into brand new club and coming off injury and is already a known player

      Boyd – playing now.

Brooks – said he wasn’t going to play this summer for any NTs and wanted to rest for Bundes.

      Chandler – hurt

      Cunningham – …

      Davies – double ellipses

      Edu – Hurt

Garza – doesn’t see more minutes/justify a call over any of the other new guys.

Gyau – barely played all year, didn’t play well, and is now in club limbo trying to sort that out

Lichaj – I also think I agree with you here, should’ve gotten a call at least to the 35.

Morales – Really didn’t play much but I could see this as well after his late run into form

      Simek – …

      • biff says:

Chandler is not hurt. He resumed training last week and two days ago flew off for vacation in Greece.

        link to bild.de

      • Victor says:

George John? I thought for sure he’d be included on this list….he helps anchors one of the best teams in the MLS right now….bad move by Klinns

    • Brian says:

Cunningham? I think your comment from 2002 passed through a time warp.

    • Yevgeniy says:

So, basically everyone that you have ever heard of that plays abroad + Agudelo?

    • the unmistakeable Ronaldinho says:

I disagree with you about Gooch. Our CB situation is such a mess right now we need to be evaluating all options. If he can steady his club situation, I honestly wouldn’t be shocked if he was starting next summer. Maybe I’m just nostalgic for per-injury Onyewu, but I think he is still the most talented center back we have if he can get consistent pt.

      • Iggy says:

I’d take a gonzo from the Belgium game over gooch in a heartbeat at this point.

        • the unmistakeable Ronaldino says:

Can’t really disagree there. Gooch needs to get back with a club that as faith in him and play well.

The point I was trying to make is I think Gooch is a better defender than Gonzalez. If both were getting regular PT and playing well I take Gooch. That just hasn’t been happening for Onyewu the last couple years. The mental lapses from Gonzo for the national team and in MLS are inexcusable. I just don’t trust him.

  13. Josh? says:

OK. But Jesus what does Lichaj have to do to get a call?

    • SanFran415 says:

Have a club that he plays for?

    • QuakerOtis says:

And not choke with every minute of PT that club gives him.

Seriously, though I see why people like him, he’s got to compete with other speedy outside backs who, while not perfect, still play a full, solid game or five for their clubs. Excepting Parkhurst and Fiscal. Still not sure why they’re there. But the fact that they are on the squad does not mean Lichaj should be.

      • QuakerOtis says:

See my post below, where I kind of disagree with myself here. I see how Lichaj might be an option at RB, but not LB.

    • MFP says:

The outrage over his non-callup seems nuts to me. He replaced an injured defender in the worst defense in the EPL for the last 2 games of the season last year. Other than that, sat on the bench and did nothing of note. I mean, it’s fine if people like him, but saying “what does he have to do to earn call up?!” seems nuts to me. “Be good for a while” is the answer.

  14. Brian says:

When all is said and done, any MLS player who sticks around for the WCQs will probably be released from the Gold Cup. There is no way,JK is going to have these guys away from their teams for that much time.

  15. Joamiq says:

A lot more overlap with the WCQ roster than I was expecting…

  16. biff says:

Hallelujah. Very glad to see Donovan on the Gold Cup, although I think would have been better to have him in this camp. All in all, I like this roster a lot. However, I would like to see Freddie Adu. “Hush” convinced me Adu should be given a look on a rant he did yesterday on the bottom of the thread linked below. Mind you, just a look. If it doesn’t work, move on.

    • louis z says:

he is probably going to do that in Greece while on vacation.

My German is not what it once was. That is not an outright decline though.

But it basically reads like. “I’m still kinda hurt.” “I’m training to get up to speed.” blah blah blah vacation in Greece then… About the gold cup he roughly says “[I'll need to clear it with my club, hopefully we can find a solution.]”

I admit though Biff. That is basically saying

I’m busy with my club soooo I’m prolly not coming.

  18. Travis says:

Lichaj must have done something horribly wrong to not even get put onto this roster. I would rather see this roster have a bit more youth as opposed to players who are what we know they are (Gordon, Wondo, etc.) and while they are ok aren’t going to be a big deal. Overall about what I expected

    • biff says:

+1 on Lichaj. Sure wish a journalist would do an article on Lichaj, like ask Klinsmann where he is on the depth chart and why Klinsi is ignoring him and why Klinsi feels Beasley is a better fullback. I mean come on, Beasley listed as a defender on Klinsmann’s rosters. DMB should be starting at left wing.

      • QuakerOtis says:

I’m not sold on Lichaj, not sure why so many people like him as a prospect, but…

If there’s hope for Lichaj, it’s on the right side. He’s not getting ahead of Johnson/Castillo/DMB. Morrow and Boca, while much slower, also bring certain skills Lichaj lacks at this point (relatively better composure, ball handling, international experience, playing time), so he’s got to behind them on the depth chart as well.

With Chandler apparently being an a.s.s (according to posts above), Cameron looking uncomfortable at RB, and Dolo aging, Lichaj’s speed EPL training makes him a potential project, especially compared to Parkhurst. Quakes fan, love Beita, but I think he and Lichaj are very similar, so Lichaj is worth a shot I suppose.

        • Travis says:

I’m not saying hes the answer, I am not sold on him either. However I would rather see him given a shot as opposed to some of the outside backs I see on this roster such as Ashe or Beltran.

        • GW says:

          QO,

If Lichaj is a prospect then that prospect has to be developed at the club level. The USMNT has no time for that.

When he actually wins a job then the US can look at him.

      • MFP says:

Honest question, since I haven’t followed the team closely for more than 2 years. Why are people so excited about Lichaj? It couldn’t possibly be how he’s played with his club team. Why is a conspiracy that he hasn’t gotten a recent look?

        • SBI Troll says:

Simply it’s a rare ability to defend and get into the attack. But seriously he showed well in all the caps he has gotten so far. Also after the Bornstein fiasco at LB, along with Fabian Johnson and Timmy Chandler, Lichaj was regarded by hardcore US fans as a fullback of the future. While Lichaj has struggled to win a spot at Villa, he has provided glimpses of his potential playing against players such as Gareth Bale of Spurs fame. Blessed with top end speed, Lichaj possesses the ability to recover when recovering from attack. Also at age 24, he provides more upside and long term value over recent callups Parkhurst and Ashe who are as good as it gets. Lichaj also has the ability to play both fullback positions in a pinch, while displaying this ability in the last Gold Cup final.

Fans are upset with the exclusion of Lichaj because many other young players have been called up before. Stop gap fullbacks who probably will never play in a game but are insurance have been called up, but not Lichaj just to “kick the tires” on. A player who makes the first team bench of a top 4 league deserves some due diligence or investigation. The US is in a transition on defense looking for players of the future. The lack of a callup is disappointing but Lichaj can fix this by finding a new club, impressing, then starting regularly. To be continued…

        • Travis says:

It isn’t so much that I’m excited about Lichaj as I am not excited about other choices. Lichaj played in the EPL and have shown some flashes yet we call in people like Ashe over him. I’m not saying he is the greatest but he has yet to be called in under Klinsmann which is odd

    • Josh D says:

Lichaj doesn’t have a team. It’s better for him to work on that little problem this summer.

  19. MY Starting XI:
    —Eddie Johnson—Herculez
    Zusi––Corona––Donovan
    —–Beckerman—
    Castillo-Besler-Gonzalez-Beasley
    —–Rimando——

My reasons for this lineup: Rimando best of the 4 IMO, Beasley experienced, Beckerman still the best choice at DM, Corona and Castillo in top form in Liga MX, Diskerud and Seamus McInerney still early, Holden as possible super sub (for now), Davis too slow.

    • zztoppppp says:

Concacaf is letting the U.S. field 12 players each game? Sweet!

      • Anthony says:

we need all the help we can get, I bet that if the MLS doesn’t win the CCL this year they are going to change the format to play all the games in america…

  20. Dave says:

    Allelujah! Donovan is risen!

  21. Luke says:

I think the final 23 man roster will be these players. I’ve excluded the MLS players that are currently in camp. As someone noted in a previous post to be in both camps would take them away from their clubs for a long time.

    GK – Rimando, Johnson, Hamid
DF – Boca, Onyewu, Goodson, Castillo, Parkhurst, Beltran, Orozco
    MF/DF – Beasley
MF – Beckerman, Shea, Corona, Holden, Bedoya, Diskerud, Gatt, Feilhaber
FW – McInerney, Donovan, Gomez, Bruin

Interestingly enough Beckerman is the ONLY D Mid called up. Considering Klinsmann likes to play 2-3 D-Mids, the line ups for the Gold Cup could be very interesting. A lot of creative, offensive minded mids to choose from. The Gold Cup games could be very interesting to watch.

    • the unmistakeable Ronaldinho says:

I’d like to see Shea with the GC team too but think it would be wise to leave him off. He has a new manager to impress, and we should give him the opportunity of a full preseason to do so. Working his way back on the field for Stoke will be better for everyone long term.

  22. Raymon says:

Can someone remind me of what’s at stake in this Gold Cup, since Conf Cup berth is not on the table? I remember CONCACAF upped the ante with something, but I cant recall what.

    • Raymon says:

Never mind, got it. 2013 and 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup winners will play one-off match for 2017 Confederations Cup berth

    • atd says:

Winner of this year’s GC plays the winner of 2015 for a spot in the 2017 Confederations Cup. Or something like that.

  23. AC says:

Probably could have called in the whole Galaxy backline as they play very well together…Not saying they would all be first options, but the understanding is something that’s needed…Hopefully would like to see that more and players step up to make the national team….Teams like Spain, Germany, etc., have at least 2-3 players in defense or midfield who all play for the same team and have great understanding of one another…

  24. AC says:

I’d like to see Lee Nquyen work his way back someday….The guy is a true number 10 who can really distribute the ball which is lacking

  25. alocksley says:

In some ways, I like this roster better than the WCQ roster. At least there are some creative mids and wingers on the squad.

  26. Freddie Footballer says:

    Some observations:

Galaxy and KC are really going to miss their defenders this summer.

Big chance for Joe Corona. Opportunity to cap-tie Mix. Interesting – EJ listed as a midfielder.

Welcome back, Landon. I would’ve liked to have seen Agudelo here as well as Lee Nguyen.

We will see if Gooch and Boca have anything to say about the battle at CB.

    • Freddie Footballer says:

Forgot to add, I hope JK brings Johannsson into this camp if nothing else for Aron to check out the USMNT and see if its a good match for him.

  27. Doc says:

6 current or past Houston Dynamo players on the roster. Cameron would be 7. Where’s Cameron? Anyway, all were found by Kinear before they were on the radar. I vote Dom for next USMNT coach.

    • Austin Nichols says:

      +1

      • H-Town says:

Agreed. I think the majority of US players would breathe a sigh of relief if he got the job.

He would immediately come in and say, “We are playing a 4-4-2, with a holding forward and a slasher, a true d-mid, and CAM; and our foci will be the counter, set pieces, and most importantly DEFENSE! We will attack through dynamic wing play, overlapping fullbacks, and use the central mids to connect play.”

        • Nate Dollars says:

if he actually spoke the word “foci”, i think i’d have to smack him in the mouth.

  28. Marco says:

    Agudelo over Gordon.
    Gyau over Davis.
    Morales over Orozco
    Lichaj over Parkhurst.

    • bryan says:

spot on. although, i think orozco should be there for sure. remove ashe for morales.

      • Cornelius says:

I’d be fine with any of Marco’s changes, but I’d rather keep Orozco and Parkhurst, and probably Davis too. Leave out Ashe (like bryan said) and Beltran. I don’t think Gyau is a better pick than Davis at the moment.

        • bryan says:

he’s not better than Davis at the moment, but i’d rather have a look at a young guy like Gyau. plus, he has real speed.

    • SD says:

      i agree

    • Benny says:

      I think so too.

  29. dcm9 says:

Happy to see benny. Scratch gordon, add agudelo and I’m happy

    • EspinDOHla says:

      SnoFro 4 life!

    • Increase says:

      Right, I mean…. Jones is sure bad…….????

I so can’t tell if comments like this are serious. Because, Zusi is competent if sometimes boring. Edu… is a good squad guy with lots of experience…. and Jones is our 2nd or 3rd best player…..

  31. 2tone says:

For the most part I like the roster.

Really cool to see Bobby Wood geting some notice.

Would have liked to have seen Agudelo.

  32. Austin Nichols says:

    Will Bruin — Jack M.
    Davis — mixx — Holden — Donovan
    Castillo — Boca — Orozco — Parkhurst
    –Rimando–

    Sub: shea for Davis
    Wondo for Bruin
    feilhabber for Mixx

  33. Joe Schmo says:

Where the hell is Dax McCarty???? He is way better than that crappy beckerman

    • JD says:

      This.

    • Gary Page says:

Yay, somebody who agrees with me. Join my just created Dax McCarty fan club.
We will meet every time SBI has an article on US national call ups.

    • GW says:

“Joe Schmo Where the hell is Dax McCarty???? He is way better than that crappy Beckerman”

Maybe but they play different roles. McCarty is in competition with MB90.

    • MFP says:

Heh, he might be awesome, but for some reason I can’t imagine cheering for someone named “Dax.” I hope he makes me regret saying that, but until he does, wow, that’s a horrible name.

  34. bryan says:

loving the selections and will be interested to see who gets cut. obviously those who have major minutes in WCQs are likely to be left off. surprised Agudelo was left off.

locks: LD, Holden, Boyd, Corona, Gatt, Mix, Bedoya, Jack Mac, Beckerman, and Evans.

  35. Good Jeremy says:

I’m surprised Sean Franklin isn’t on the list. He has played well at RB and RM and we lack depth at RB, unless you’re a Parkhurst fan. I’m mildly surprised that Yedlin isn’t on the provisional roster for the same reasons.

    • bryan says:

anyone called in after the group stage would have to be on this 35 man roster, right? if so, that answers the question of who from the u-20 team could get called into the gold cup after turkey.

    • Gary Page says:

Galaxy fan here. Franklin, IMO has been inconsistent and sometimes does not play all that well. I don’t think he has improved all that much in the last couple of years. Yedlin will undoubtedly play in the U-20 WC and Seattle probably wouldn’t be too happy about him missing for the GC, too. He’s young, he can get his chance during the next cycle.

    • Eric Galaxy says:

Do you even watch the Galaxy? Sean Franklin is a mediocre defender and extremely frustrating to watch getting forward. Can’t cross for anything and looses posession 9 times out of 10. Clearly I cant stand the guy.

Mike Magee should be on the roster. Same as Agudelo, Dax, Nguyen. They are playing very well.

      • Eric Galaxy says:

Lee Ngyuen is the Asian Dos Santos. Would like to see him on the Galaxy.

      • Good Jeremy says:

        Yes, I watch the Galaxy.
He’s versatile and athletic and I think does get up the flank well.
        Agree to disagree I guess.

  36. Brett says:

Put Bradley and Guzan in there and this is better than the squad he called in for the qualifiers.

  37. just saying says:

where in the eff is Magee?

  38. Hush says:

I see at least 3 bench warmers and a guy I love that has come off a serious injury who clearly is not 100% there. The exclusion of Adu, Agudelo, Lichaj, Morales, and maybe Gyua is mind boggling considering who we called in. Again, same type players called in for the exception of a few… The return of Gooch and Boca should have left out Goodson and Park out. These guy are aight, clearly boca and Gooch riding the bench are still better than these two guys. We are already familiar with them, no need for it. Wondo, Davis, Jack, evans, and Torres are waste of roster spots imo. I would take any of the 5 over these guys any day. Because each one brings something different to the table unlike the ones I just mentioned. Torres? You have Mix and corona, no need for another similar player. This is why you bring Adu or Gyau to mix the wings. Agudelo over Wack wondo any day of the week. Guy is garbage! I love JK, but inlcuding Shea and giving Holden a chance to work his way back is sooooo biased when clearly you have guys that can offer more right now. I’m still glad my boy Holden is back, but we have to admit, he’s not going to regain form that quickly… if so, then give CD a chance too!

Anyone here who has been on SBI for a while knows, I backed up Castillo and Adu constantly because I know these guys can get the job done better than most guys on our pool…. Funny how a lot more folks are starting to respect Castillo after watching him closely… He stopped Barrera from making fools out of us, yet folks still bashed his performance, acting as if we had better options at that time… Wood, Gatt, and Mix are a plus. Hopefully one of them can bring something different to the temple. I know Gatt and Mix have special techs… hope we can see them

    • Bean says:

The web is a big echo chamber. I take every comment with a grain of salt. The big thing right now is Lichaj, the savior of America.lol

      • Nate Dollars says:

        “Lichaj, the savior of America”

…said no one, except sarcastic commenters who couldn’t come up with an actual counterpoint.

  39. Hush says:

Who is Donovan? I hope he’s better than that Zusi guy I saw play yesterday.

  40. Micah says:

    Why no Jozy?

  41. Thebumswillalwayslose says:

It’s obvious, Eric Lihaj took Jurgen Klinsmann’s mother out for a nice seafood dinner and never called her again. There really is no other explanation for leaving off a guy who would be by far the best right back in this camp.

However, getting past that I actually really like this roster. You have to assume, at least I think anyway, that the MLS and Liga MX guys currently involved with the WCQ squad won’t be asked to pull double duty. That would mean Zusi, Davis, Evans, EJ, Herc, DMB, Gonzo and Besler are out of the equation. With the guys left, we are still going to field a pretty strong squad.

    ——- Jack Mac/Wondo ———-
    LD/Shea —- Mix/Bedoya – Gatt/Corona
    – Holden/Benny – Torres/Beckerman —
    Castillo – Boca – Gooch/Goodson – Beltran/Parkhurst
    ————- Rimando —————–

Round out the 23 with two other GK’s and a forward and that’s a squad I’d take my chances on in the Gold Cup. Being that Beckerman is really the only true defensive midfielder on the roster and we’re going to be playing teams we should handle for the most part, it might actually be a squad that’s more fun to watch than usual.

  42. beto says:

very strong roster! i assume 10-12 of these guys does not get selected but in all honesty I don’t have a problem with any of them playing a role in the Gold Cup; except maybe Evans and Gordon..

I was hoping to see George John, but i guess he isn’t 100% these days, and expecting to see Williams and Kljestan, but no real loss there…

strong vet group hopefully can win the cup.

  43. beto says:

if i was to trim this down to a 26 man roster, (those cut)
    GK: Hall, Rimando, Johnson (Hamid)
    RB: Parkhurst, Evans (Beltran)
CB: Goodson, Gonzalez, Boca, Besler, Orozco (Onyewu)
    LB: Castillo, Beasley (Ashe)
CM: Feilhaber, Beckerman, Holden, Torres, Mix, Corona
OM: Davis, Gatt, Landon, Bedoya (Shea)
FWD: McInerney, EJ, Gomez, Bruin (Wood, Wondo, Gordon)

    Johnson_________McInerny/Bruin__________Gomez
    __________________Donovan___________________
    ______Holden________________Diskerud_________
    _Castillo_____Besler_________Gonzalez___Parkhurst_
    ___________________Rimando__________________

it will be interesting to see who comes in healthy and ready to take a spot back (Onyewu?, Boca? Shea?) and who Jurgen leaves out because of too much action in June (Gonzo? Besler? Gomez?)

  44. Steven says:

    Where is Clint Dempsey?

    • petedx says:

Washington DC, I think. But in relation to this provisional squad he is too good for it and (rightfully) will be gearing up for preseason with spurs in hopes of earning a regular spot.

  45. Neruda says:

Who get’s left of GC roster?

    GOALKEEPERS- Tally Hall
JK may take all four keepers but since Hall is the newest to the senior team I’d say he’s sent back to Dynamo.

    DEFENDERS- Clarence Goodson, DaMarcus Beasley
These two because they’ll have played quite a bit in the friendlies and qualifying. Wouldn’t be too surprised if Parkhurst is not on this squad either. The Mexican league players will bring a lot of knowledge of CONCOCAF style of play, especially the Mexican NT so I also wouldn’t be surprised to Beasley on this team either.

    MIDFIELDERS- Brad Davis, Brad Evans
Same goes for these two and frankly we know what they can do. Davis could make a strong case with his set piece skills but Evans seems redundant.

    FORWARDS- Herculez Gomez, Alan Gordon
Gomez will probably play a lot in the qualifying matches so JK may give him a break (I know there is enough to rest between June qualifiers and the start of GC) and give a shot to newcomers. Alan Gordon has strong arial presence but so does Eddie Johnson so I’d send Gordon back to his club. Wondo could also not make the final GC roster since Jack Mac is a bit similar in terms of the smarts and types of goals they score but in the end I think they’ll both be on the squad and one of them (JackMac) will announce his arrival to CONCOCAF by scoring some goals.

  46. Joe says:

Holy smokes that’s a heckuva Gold Cup roster!

I’m not even ready to find a 23 man roster in there much less a starting lineup.
No doubt, those would change a few times.

  47. KG says:

    ————-Herc
    ——————–Donovan
    Shea—-Feilhaber——Corona
    ———-Holden
    Castillo-Omar-Bes-Gatt
    ————– Hall

This lineup= counterattacking greatness/a gold cup victory= a lineup that will never see the light of day under JK

  48. marvin cox says:

What adout Terrance Boyd and gyau

  49. PD says:

The one opportunity to call in Paco Torres to play as a deep lying central mid and no one makes a peep about it. Hope this isn’t the last we hear of him. He’s a quality player that has a lot more to offer the national side than the utility roles he’s been forced into.

  50. Beckerman4lyfe says:

    Sweet!

  51. todd says:

what an extremely weak batch of midfielders…we’re going to get tossed from the Gold Cup long before the final.

    • Charles says:

Yeah I guess you were surprised Donovan and LA won back to back years…and Corona and TJ did so well…and a few guys getting serious playing time during qualifying.

And you have a terrible midfield….or a troll trying to start a dumb debate.

    • Benny says:

Tossed with the trophy in our hands, maybe.

  52. biff says:

After reading the posts above just want to emphasize that nobody above is trying to tout Lichaj as the saviour. What we are saying is that he has played several seasons for a Premier League team and that it is unfathomable that Klinsmann has not called him in for a look. Just a look. That is all we are asking. Lichaj made several appearance for Aston Villa late in the season in a massive relegation fight and generally did a good job in those appearances within a team known for bad defense. I have no doubt that Lichaj would defensively be a better left back the DMB, who I think should be our starting left winger, and would be better than Parkhurst and Chandler at both RB and LB. Not sure about Cameron, who I think is a solid RB.

Klinsmann called Edu, Shea, Williams, Goodson and Parkhurst for this camp, all of whom either did not play for months or hardly at all, why can’t he give Lichaj a look. Seeing how Klinsmann operates, I would not be surprised if he is afraid that Lichaj will perform well and then would have to jettison one of his faves to make room for Lichaj.

    • GW says:

“After reading the posts above just want to emphasize that nobody above is trying to tout Lichaj as the saviour. What we are saying is that he has played several seasons for a Premier League team and that it is unfathomable that Klinsmann has not called him in for a look. Just a look. That is all we are asking.”

      biff,

      ”Just a look”?

There is video and there are scouting reports. Do you suppose Lambert is full of praise for Lichaj?

If these various sources are positive, then yeah you bring the guy in for a look, if they are not then tell me why waste the time?

If you have been an exceptional player with injury circumstances (Holden, Shea) or have a history of accomplishment with the US (Gooch) then maybe you make an exception.

      Lichaj has none of this.
He gifted Mexico their tying goal in the 2011 Gold Cup final (watch the replay) and had never been part of a JK team. Much of the positive vibe about him was precisely because the measuring stick was Bornstein and people were not being very fussy. It’s ironic that people talk about how Eric shut down Bale because there was another US back who shut down Messi so bad that allegedly they moved Leo to the other side in the second half. That was Jonny Bornstein in the 2007 Copa America.

Left back? Lichaj is not comfortable there and has said as much several times. DMB is preferable to Lichaj at any position on the field except maybe keeper. He’s more versatile, more experienced; DMB is an all around better soccer player than Lichaj..
Lichaj has been at Villa for four managers ONeill, Houllier, McLeish, and Lambert. Maybe they hate Americans, except they all loved Freidel and Guzan, but the fact remains that Eric failed to impress any of them. His half season or so of league games and starts have come due to injuries to the starters or ineptness on the part of the starters. Once they came back or new ones were brought in, it was back to the bench for Eric.

Edu, Shea, Williams, Goodson and Parkhurst the guys you mentioned, all have won
legitimate starting jobs for their clubs something Lichaj has never done.

Finally, right back is not a position of need. You could argue that Holden and Gooch if they suddenly blossom would be filling need positions. But at right back Dolo is the starter followed by Fabian/Chandler followed in no particular order by Fiscal, Cameron, Danny Williams, Brad Evans, and that’s before we get to the injured guys and the other MLS RB’s
      .
When Lichaj moves, wins a starting job and then begins to impress people, then you can talk about “giving him a look”.

  53. biff says:

Will also add here that Chandler is no longer injured. He was training again last week and I am certain that Klinsmann invited him to this camp so he could be with the guys and improve Chandler’s chemistry with them and also possibly play in games next week. Let’s not forget Klinsmann invited others to this camp who were recently injured and a journalist should ask Klinsmann whether he also invited Chandler and his feelings about Chandler and the Gold Cup. If Chandler declines Klinsmann’s invitation for the Gold Cup, then I think this is just another in a long line of snubs that shows Chandler is lazy when it comes to USMNT duty and not truly committed to the team and that he should be ignored for the rest of the WC 2014 cycle. And if snubs Klinsmann yet again of the Gold Cup, will anyone be surprised he misses the September qualifiers?

  54. USMNT Searching says:

I am not a DC fan, but no Chris Pontius? Need stronger DMs too?

  55. Herschel Skywalker says:

Good for Onyewu and Boca to be able to get some minutes and train up the youngsters. If they return home to MLS, no fount they would win back their starting positions over the shaky newbies. I actually think that if you just put the Confederate Cup team from a few years ago back together, they would still be a better team than the current USMNT, except At left back. But why can Lichaj and Spector not get a look? Spector is more versatile and better than Cameron at right back. And both Lichaj and Spector are better than Ashe and Beltran, especially since we are missing our starting fullbacks. Also, Edu or Alonso should be on this team as CDM and I agree that Pontius should have gotten a look. But, other than the terrible fullback situation, this roster has everything it needs. I just hope the right 12 are released before the final cut.

    • Zztoppppp says:

I am also glad that bocanegra and onyewu may get some minutes, but they have fallen too far behind to jump ahead of besler or Cameron now. Edu and Spector were never going to make this roster because they play full time in Europe. Alonso can’t play for the United States…

    • GW says:

      Herschel

Boca was the left back for most of that Confederations Cup run. Why do you want to exclude him?

Spector is recovering from an ankle injury and has not played a lot recently.

As for Lichaj, since you never see him play I don’t see how you can say he is better than Beltran and Ashe. Those guys have won their playing time.

Eric gets on the field only when a starter gets hurt.

Edu is hurt and Alonso is not yet eligible to play for the US and may never be…

  56. slowleftarm says:

Can’t believe that Donovan is playing in this meaningless tournament so that egomaniac Klinsmann can pick Zusi for the HEX games. Ridiculous.

    • biff says:

Agreed. Ridiculous that Landon was not called in so he can start building chemistry with the team and potentially play in very important Hex games. Anything less then six points in the WCQs this month and Klinsmann is gonna look incompetent and have some explainin’ to do.

100% agree, if JK doesn’t lead the US to the top 3 after passing on a sure Best XI player for the US, he will never work as a coach again….it would serve him right.

(I am a firm believer thar LD should have sucked it up an played the first few qualifiers too)

    • Soccer Kickin' says:

Hate to simply say ‘agree’ – but I do. There may be a lot more to the dynamic between Landon and JK, going back to Bayern and even to their link when Jurgen was consulting the Galaxy. Maybe Jurgen has felt like Landon hasn’t fully been there for him since he’s taken over the helm. Jurgen really stuck his neck out for Landon at Munich too. Perhaps a little bit of it is he thinks Landon hasn’t reciprocated? Who knows.

Therefore leaving Landon off the Hex roster could have been a message-sending ploy mixed in with some face saving as well as saying that if you’re not fully engaged and part of the mix we’ll move on. Message sent.

But Landon’s game adds an element we’ve definitely been missing, if we don’t get at least 6 points out of these 3 games the heat will rightly be on JK because his message-sending to Landon will have cost the team. So this could very well backfire if we do poorly, even putting his job in jeopardy.

So Klinsy is taking a risk but it is a very complex situation. I just hope that after all this Landon will be a regular face in USMNT camps again going forward to next summer – and the US wins at least 2 of these 3 qualifiers because the last thing we need is the chaos (and possibly even missing out on the WC) that would happen if we don’t.

No love for Josh Gatt? The kid has serious potential… That’s some serious asinine if you ask me…

  58. Colin in MT says:

I don’t think any MLS player who is with the WCQ team will be held over for the Gold Cup, and depending on their PT the same goes for Castillo, Beasley and Corona. That said, if I was the coach, I’d roll with this…

    Donovan——Mac——-Bedoya

    ———Mixx——Corona

    ————Torres

    Castillo–Boca–Orozco–Gatt

    • bryan says:

you mean MLS players who play a major role in WCQs. there will certainly be carry over of MLS players.

of course, even then, it still seems like JK is ready to use Omar and Besler for the Gold Cup too.
