As many injuries as there were for American players this past week, and as many reasons to worry as there seem to be now for the U.S. Men’s National team, it was still a pretty good week for several American players.

Herculez Gomez and Amobi Okugo are two such players who enjoyed memorable weeks. Gomez scored a quality free kick goal to help lead Santos Laguna to a victory while Okugo scored the first goal of his professional career in a Philadelphia Union road win against the Colorado Rapids on Sunday.

Both Gomez and Okugo are guests on the latest episode of The SBI Podcast. We talk USMNT and CONCACAF Champions League with Gomez, among other things, while we catch up with Okugo on the state of the Philadelphia Union and his own USMNT aspirations.

Co-host Garrett Cleverly and I also discuss the recent rash of injuries for the USMNT, and we break down the weekend’s action in MLS as well.

You can find it on the menu bar on the front page of the site (top right corner to be exact)

  2. Jason says:

When Gomez says “use our experience” to win the game that means teammates diving using dirty play and relying on refs to decide the game. I love Gomez, but these are tactics this team will use. Santos will control possession and create a lot of chances. But these tactics will be blatant and frustrating. I can’t wait! Go dynamo!! Bb

Yeah…. I’m pretty sure that’s not what Herc meant at all. Santos are a skilled, disciplined side… they’ve dismantled plenty of teams at home without needing any of the antics you describe. Count on it, they’ll definitely be more aggressive at home and be putting some pressure on… a shut out will be very tough/improbable. Houston has it’s work cut out for them and are likely going to need to play tight, compact D and counter to snatch an away goal to move on. I’m hoping they show well and that MLS represents to the end in this years CL.

Loved the interview…. Herc is a class act. Hoping he brings it in the Hex!

  3. Beast says:

Dynamo better stay tight in the back when they play in Torreon. We’ve seem plenty of MLS teams get executed south of the border.

  4. Iggy says:

Herc’s a well spoken guy. Good interview. the CCL matchup is a win win, either an MLS team goes thru or Herc does!

  5. Eric says:

    Go Herc!

  6. Hector says:

Great interviews today! By the way, I love the intro and outro music!
