Mexican League Rewind: Morelia halts Pachuca run, Atlas’ streak snapped, and more

By IVES GALARCEP

Morelia has had an up-and-down season in the Mexican Clausura, but they recorded their biggest win of the season on Saturday, beating Pachuca and snapping the Tuzos’ three-match winning streak.

Hector Mancilla scored two goals to help Monarcas rally and score a win that kept Pachuca from climbing into the Top Four in the standings.

Atlas missed a chance to close ground on first-place Tigres when they settled for a scoreless draw against a struggling Queretaro side. The draw snapped a four-match winning streak for the Zorros.

Club Tijuana showed few signs of fatigue from their Copa Libertadores travel in posting a 2-0 victory against Atlante to stay within range of Tigres.

Here is a closer look at the past weekend in the Mexican League:

NEXT WEEK’S GAME OF THE WEEK

Atlas vs. Club Tijuana. The second-place and third-place teams in Mexico square off, with the loser in danger if slipping out of contention for the top spot in the League.

Club America vs. Cruz Azul. The Mexico City Derby will be a crucial one for both sides. They’re both coming off losses, and Club America needs the win to maintain hope of staying in the race for the top spot. Cruz Azul needs it to try and climb back into the top eight.

  1. Always good to see an tigres with JFT doing well.

  2. RPM says:

I thought the Queretaro – Atlas game was going to be a good one because of what was at stake. Nope, looked more like a regular match. Well so long Gallos, enjoy Ascenso MX next year

  3. Kevin says:

Those two matches should be good. Impressed with how well Xolos is doing playing two tournaments with such a limited squad. Should be interesting how long they keep that up.

  4. G. Bean says:

    Tigres are looking dangerous.

  5. Weaksauce says:

    Queretaro 0, Atlas 0

I watch this game because of the possibility of ricardo bocanegra representing the USMNT

I will never watch mexican soccer again,,, so much diving and whistles

    • Lost in Space says:

I thought Ricardo Bocanegra was locked up by Mexico. If memory serves me, he played as part of their U-23 team during the Olympic Qualifications, and you cannot switch federations beyond the U-20 level. Correct me if I’m wrong, as it would be nice to have another option come from below the boarder.
