Mexican League Rewind: Santos Laguna ties Tigres, Pachuca hands Cruz Azul first loss

By IVES GALARCEP

UANL Tigres kept their unbeaten record intact this past weekend in Mexican league action, but they needed a comeback against a dangerous Santos Laguna side to do it.

Darwin Quintero’s second-minute strike put the Mexican League leaders in an early hole, but Jose Torres’ squad stepped up yet again, with a Juninho equalizer helping Tigres salvage a point at Estadio Universitario.

While Tigres did drop points at home, they became the final team to be undefeated after Pachuca handed Cruz Azul their first loss of the season. The ‘Tuzos’ are on a roll, having won three straight matches to close the gap on the top teams in Mexico.

Club America missed out on their chance to move past Tigres into first place when a Gerardo Rodriguez goal in the final minute of stoppage time helped give Toluca a crucial 2-2 draw at Estadio Azteca.

At the other end of the table, big-spending Club Leon finally registered their first win of the season, beating winless San Jose in a clash of cellar dwellers.

Here is a rundown of all of the weekend’s scores in Mexico, and a look a head to next week’s top match-ups:

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Luis Gabriel Rey, Jaguares de Chiapas. The Colombian striker delivered a pair of goals to lead Jaguares to a 2-0 upset win of defending champion Club Tijuana.

NEXT WEEK’S GAME OF THE WEEK

Santos Laguna vs. Club America. The Guerreros are winless in three matches and are in dire need of three points to try and rejoin the pack at the top of the league. Club America can’t afford to drop points as they continue to chase Tigres for first place.

Cruz Azul vs. UANL Tigres. This was almost a match-up of unbeatens, but Cruz Azul suffered their first loss last weekend. Tigres is playing good soccer but winning at Cruz Azul won’t be easy.

against Fredy Montero. Should be interesting. Montero has looked good for Millonarios so far this season.

Querétaro vs Atlas this weekend is a huge game, especially after Querétaro allowed a stoppage time equalizer from Atlante yesterday. Talk about a “relegation six pointer”– relegation is pretty much between Atlas and Querétaro this year, whichever team finishes higher than the other stays up, and Atlas currently has a 7 point lead on los Gallos Blancos.
