USMNT vs. Canada: Match Night Commentary

The U.S. Men’s National Team kicks off U.S. Soccer’s 100th year, and a very important year for a variety of reasons, with tonight’s friendly against Canada in Houston (9pm, ESPN2).

An MLS-heavy side will take the field at BBVA Compass Stadium tonight, with players looking to impress Jurgen Klinsmann enough to not only gain ground on the USMNT depth chart, but also to potentially earn a place on the World Cup qualifying squad that will travel to Honduras for the Feb. 6th match against the ‘Catrachos’.

The U.S. defense will be in the spotlight tonight, with the centerback pairing of Omar Gonzalez and Matt Besler playing for what could wind up being a starting role in qualifying.

The Americans will face a Canada side that is much younger, and weaker, than the side that forced the full U.S. team into a scoreless draw in Toronto. Dwayne DeRosario leads a young Canadian side that looked awful in a 4-0 loss to Denmark during the weekend.

SBI will be providing live commentary before, during and after the match, so stay with us as we bring you all the action and analysis on tonight’s match.

Enjoy the action (Tonight’s Match Night Commentary is after the jump):

  1. James says:

Anyone have a stream site for this???

  2. Greg says:

    James,

    Firsrowsports.eu has every game. Enjoy.

  3. Francois says:

    I hate that lineup.

  4. Moe says:

Looks like ESPN has signed on to broadcast all Mexico matches thru 2014.. Interesting to see who gets better ratings.

  5. wilyboy says:

Big blow to Feilhaber. Also, Diskerud not even making the bench? He’s got a goal and an assist in three appearances, and he’s an excellent sub. He better be on the plane to Brazil, or JK doesn’t know what he’s doing.

  6. FEED ME says:

no Landon? what is Klinsmann thinking?

  7. chris says:

    terrible line up

    • chris says:

I will say that hoping we do well, but think we could have started better players and some of the players not dressed should be playing

  8. Maykol says:

Does anybody know any live streams? besides espn3?

  9. G. Bean says:

    No Tally. Maybe next time.

  10. Riggity says:

i know they wont answer it on the game cast so I will ask it here. How much of a deutsche-er is michael kammarmann?

  11. Dudester says:

I’m very disappointed not to see Gatt starting. Also to a lesser extent Agudelo.Wtf at Evans and and Davis starting.Very little chance they help us in any qualifying games.

  12. AMPhibian says:

canada is hungry for a little redemption after getting so soundly schooled a few days ago, we better come out with a pep in our step if we want to get a W.

  13. Old School says:

    Great National Anthem

  14. GW says:

DeRo vs, Davis in an international should be fun for Dynamo fans.

  15. TomG says:

    Really hate this lineup

  16. ec says:

Really disappointed that Bedoya and Gatt were left out of the lineup, I think the USMNT works best with speed on the wings. And would have loved to get to see Zusi try and run things from the middle and see what he’s got.

  17. Jeb says:

Does kyle beckerman deserve to be captain? … Just asking the question

  18. Josh D says:

No Mix on the bench. Very upsetting.

Crap starting 11. I’d rather see more youth.

  19. Old School says:

    Supporters need some different songs

  20. deepvalue says:

Two best things about Canada are the anthem and DeRo. Glad we can see more Mexico games in the US, now if we can just get the US games.

  21. TomG says:

Maybe JK is deliberately picking a lineup with no central midfield playmaker and no wide speed so that Canada would have lots of possession and test Omar and the Beez? Pls read in sarcasm font.

  22. TomG says:

Aaaaaand Evans blows one. He’s out of his depth, IMO.

  23. TomG says:

Just watch how much smoother the team will look once Feilhaber comes on.

  24. Joe says:

why am I getting the same college basketball on espn and espn2. Am I the only one having trouble watching the game?

  25. Mig says:

I am willing to go out on a limb and predict that the US is going to struggle under JK in qualifying. Not because we don’t have the talent in the pool, we do. I just don’t think Klinsman is going to select the right players. Just an opinion but I really have doubts.

    • A says:

      Well you’re an idiot.

    • Dudester says:

Yeah he needs to put as many dynamic players in the attack as he can ie Agudelo Gatt Diskerud.Im not digging all these possession oriented mids.No matter how good we move the ball.

      • TomG says:

Yes, I agree but they are not really even possession mids. They are not true CMs with ball skills, touch and the ability to read a play and make a nice diagonal, through ball. They are direct, long ball, hybrid type mids.

      • Mig says:

Well, we DO have possession. ;)

    • Vic says:

I think in 2011 when Klinnsmann started his player selection was awful. In 2012 it was greatly improved. I think we have too much depth for Klinnsmann now to pick bad players. Once you take away the Euro/S. American players like tonight, then Klinnsmann’s poor selection comes into play.

      • Mig says:

Really interesting idea, Vic. Gotta think on that one.

      • TomG says:

I kind of disagree. I think the lineup we put out at Jamaica was pathetically defensive minded which makes no sense given that the Reggae Boys sat back in a defensive shell the whole game forcing the USA to possess and attack. I feel JK just bashes the US players and puts forth timid lineups like tonight when he should take it to them. Against Italy, fine, play defensive but against Jamaica and Canada? Come on!! Put some speed and playmakers n the field!

        • Vic says:

I meant 2012 overall was pretty good. However, I agree Jamaica away was poor lineup selection. Jamaica at home was very good lineup selection by Klinnsmann. If you look at 2011 you’ll see calls for Beckerman, Shea, Agudelo, Rogers, Larenowitz and Tim Ream.

          • TomG says:

Yes, agreed, but the timidity of this lineup and the utter lack of playmaking or wing speed makes me wonder if JK has any clue how to unlock a bunker D.

  26. sly says:

Its still early but Beckerman is playing well. Damn Ras Trent can still do it.

  27. Jester says:

    1. Beltran is awful
    2. Wondo, Davis, beckerman NEVER will be on WC 2014 roster.
    3. GATT, Mix, Bedoya all need to be getting games now in case they are on qualifying roster.

    4. This is worst line up possible, unless Lalas, Hedjuk and David Regis come out of retirement!

  28. AngelofLA says:

Boring, Boring, Boring this is why people keep asking for this MLS players, Don’t get me wrong I love MLS but please Internationally some of this player need to step it up. Please Beckerman is doing a fair game but please and Wondo & Johnson please get in it, get in the game kids.

  29. Old School says:

Wondo has the mentality and understanding for this level but continues to look like he lacks the ability/execution.

  30. Mig says:

While it looks ugly, it frankly looks like a whole lot of games where one team has the possession, the other team ain’t interested, and it just gets messy.

  31. Old School says:

Too many ”try hard” guys on the pitch. Not enough flair or flash

    • TomG says:

      Agreed

    • Dudester says:

Agreed. This is a friendly,a time to play your most exiting line up regardless of result. That means guys like Gatt, Bedoya Mix and Agudelo.Time and time again Klinsmann has played too safe a line up in friendlys thinking a good result means more than a exiting performance.

  32. TomG says:

Johnson and Zusi are the only ones who have looked remotely dangerous with the ball.

  33. AngelofLA says:

I think he should put a U23 team in the field. Please someone wake me up soon. Can’t wait for Second half already. COME USA, COME GUYS play with more style and Brad Evans, Davis no need to be in this game.

  34. Vic says:

Davis looking very skilled. Bob Bradley, pretty good coach but two big mistakes: trading Brad Davis from the Metrostars in 2002 and not playing Davis for the USMNT.

  35. AngelofLA says:

Possession by USA is boring, Klismann want them to play like Barca is stupid the keep passing the ball left, right and backward no offense no flair, no style, no technical and no speed.

  36. AngelofLA says:

Why my comment is still waiting for moderation, I haven’t say anything bad or disrespect anyone.

  37. Joe says:

    BOOOOOORRRRRRRRIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGG

    What a snoozefest!

    • AngelofLA says:

JOE Wake me up, or should I wake you up. This the worst game ever, man I rather watch . the U17 or U20 play, They more enjoyable than this MLS Combine

      • Joe says:

I agree Angelo. Wake me up when someone exciting gets subbed in during the second half.

Side note, how many times can Twellman say, “Brad Davis has the best left foot in all of MLS.” Also, is that even a good thing?

    • TomG says:

+1. Awful and cowardly choices by JK tonight. Hopefully we see Benny and the Gatt on at the half. At least that will give us a little playmaking and width.

  38. Old School says:

Besler looks really comfortable on the ball.

  39. A says:

Canada is playing 11 guys behind the ball and we are starting an entire team of guys on their first cap or few caps.

We’re dominating in possession, but obviously we aren’t breaking down Canada’s double decker bus. Relax everyone.

    • AngelofLA says:

Really Possession, Are you kidding me Look at Klismann face, he want to go under the ground stuck his head. Martin Vasquez need to go and get someone else who can plan a better game.

    • TomG says:

This same team got absolutely destroyed by Denmark a week ago. We should be dominating. This is not acceptable. JK calls out his players publicly for lack of ambition. We must do the same with him.

      • A says:

We are dominating. We had something like 80% possession and Canada had like 2 shots total.

We didn’t score and that’s because Canada changed tactics after the Denmark game and are putting their entire team behind the ball for us.

We have like 5 guys starting who have NEVER SEEN THE FIELD FOR THE USA. Really, really young guys.

        • TomG says:

Canada put 10 guys behind the ball against Denmark’s B team and they didn’t have any problem.

        • TomG says:

Disagree because the young guys are on defense for us. It’s our old guys like Evans, Davis, Beckerman, and Wondo who simply don’t have the pace or the playmaking ability to unlock a bunker D.

      • Old School says:

        Wow.

        Great last sentence.

  40. MemRook says:

    If we win:

“Yay! What a fantastic showing! The future is bright! Player X and Y for president!”

    If we lose:

“Omg, the state of American soccer is over as we know it! We won’t qualify for the world cup! I hate everybody and everything!”

    If we tie:

“meh. This was a meaningless friendly. Who cares?”

    OR… see scenario for losing.

  41. Mia says:

This is DeRo vs the MLS All-Stars…

  42. MemRook says:

Really guys? The MOST boring game you’ve EVER seen???

You clearly haven’t watched any of the games in my adult rec league!!!

    • Joe says:

I would never choose to spend my time watching your rec. league. I wouldn’t even watch video of my games, when I play.

      • MemRook says:

I have the unfortunate position of being a player on one of my teams and the “coach” of my friends’ team. I have to watch a lot of it unfortunately

(I’m just kidding. I totally love it. I live for that ish! Look forward to it all week)

That said, I would totally watch my games on ESPN2 if I had the opportunity. And I know you would too….

  43. AngelofLA says:

ABOUT TIME, SEE WHAT DID I TELL YOU ABOUT JK FACE. I hope he goes at them like he did with Dempsey and tell them ok you have possession but you haven’t don’t S***. Prove you hungry, Prove me you really want to be on this team, Show me. NOOOOO YELL AT THE BUTT AND TELL THEM THAT THE NEW KID SHOULD START in the second half. YOU FREAKING J. KLISMANN

  44. 2tone says:

Lacking a few dynamic players. Hopefully Gatt, Agudelo, and Feilhaber are introduced in the second half.

  45. Dudester says:

Twellman just said “I think Davis is gonna play a huge role coming off the bench in wcq.Hes been sitting in Houston all through JK’s tenure. He dosent have the pace or flair to come off the bench in a wcq and make an impact.Twellman is talking bull.

  46. juan says:

Im hoping for at least 10 subs at the half…this sux

It’s the same old thing….we have no solution for a team that bunkers. Nobody can break them down so it comes down to trying to lob long crosses into the box

  47. A says:

    People need to relax.

Outside of Johnson, Gonzalez, Zusi, Beckerman and Johnson maybe 2 of these guys will even see the reserve group for the full team.

Seriously. If you were expecting a team of first time caps and rookie/sophomore MLSers was going to come in and drop 4 against a team coming out after an embarrassing loss you’re kidding yourself.

  48. MLS_Soccer_Talker says:

Can we finally put the “Call up Wondo” clamor to rest?…This guy played a good chunk of minutes and had chances… NEXXXXXXXXXXXTTTTTTTTTTTTT!

  49. Mig says:

I just think of the statement, “7 or 8 of these guys will be in Honduras”. And then I cry.

Yeah, JK, Dempsey hasn’t done S***. Remember that line while planning your press conference.

It reminds me of a great movie blurb of a horrible movie some 20 years ago:
“If these are the stars, think of what the rest of cast is like”

    Sigh.

  50. AngelofLA says:

Man Half Time is more exciting, I got on my PS3 and did a little FIFA13 and my game was way more exciting, 4-3 I wont.

  51. AngelofLA says:

Yeah ABout time SPEED IT UP.

  52. TomG says:

Benny and the GATT! Finally! Why didn’t they start?

  53. Vic says:

Giving Klinnsmann some credit. Like the subs. Starting to like the overall lineup.

  54. Old School says:

    Here comes Gatt

  55. Dudester says:

Oh yeah GATT,why didnt he start.

  56. ld says:

“Canada clearly playing to not get embarrassed, shades of the Olympic Qualifier.” You mean the game the Canucks won 2-0? What a BS, homer comment Ives…Are you a real journalist?

  57. AngelofLA says:

Bring Alfredo Morales, Agudelo, Mixx and another creative player.

  58. ThaDeuce says:

feed is blurry, was that a back hell lob through ball to zusi by benny? tell me my feed is blurry…

  59. Dank says:

I forgot how boring these international friendlies can be.

  60. timmytwoshoezzz says:

US can’t cross the ball worth a poo-poo tonight

  61. AngelofLA says:

BEDOYA should be in there now

  62. TomG says:

IMO the lineup SHOULD have been:

    —————– Bruin —————–
    — EJ ————————- Gatt —
    —————— Mix ——————
    —————- Benny —————–
    Morrow — Besler — Omar — Morales

    • TomG says:

Oops forgot Beckerman should have been behind mx and Benny

      • TomG says:

Actually, in retrospect, why not put Zusi and Mix with Benny at dmid. He’s played there e before and why waste a pure dmid when you don’t need it against a bunker defense….. And yes I know I’ve made an absolute clusterfuck of this. I’m going to shut up now.

      • ec says:

I wanted to see Gatt and Bedoya wide, with Johnson up top. I also would have started Zusi instead of Mixx, but sub Mixx in at half or 60th depending on how Z looked in playmaker role.

  63. ec says:

I wish Davis and Zusi would switch places, put Davis more out to the right up top and let Zusi attack from more in the middle of the field

    • ec says:

Ugh, see! That should be Davis hitting the cross from the wing, and Zusi playing the ball up-field from the defense

  64. Dudester says:

Gatt and Benny were good subs. Now we need Bedoya and Agudelo.Pls no Bruin, not in this game.

    • AngelofLA says:

Klismann has 4 more sub, so he can put, Mixx, Agudelo, Alfredo Morales, and Bedoya. Speeed and much skills players

  65. Joe says:

Some of the worst officiating I have seen as well. This ref maybe has one correct call all night.

  66. Joe says:

Umm…no Eddie that was not a corner.

  67. Joe says:

Hahahahahaha. “He was all over Eddie Johnson like a cheap suit.”

Lamest comment I have ever heard.

  68. Old School says:

Gatt has some Deuce in him. Looks like he wants to fist fight some people. Love it.

  69. ec says:

Welcome back Bedoya! Can’t believe it’s been 18 months since he was last capped.

  70. MLSsnob says:

    This game is boring.

  71. Joe says:

    This ref looks completely lost.

  72. AngelofLA says:

Watch out Beckerman and Benny Lucky no problem this time. Nice kick and Omar try hard

  73. Joe says:

What a stepover by Johnson! You gotta love the super-slow step-over to walk over maneuver.

  74. TomG says:

Better stuff this half. Benny and Gatt looking much more attack minded

  75. TomG says:

    Oooohh! OG JUST missing TWICE!

  76. ec says:

Every single league in the world (and international) should have the ref walk off 10 yards and paint a little line. Good job on that, MLS.

  77. TomG says:

    Bring that DOWN, Alejandro!

  78. MLSsnob says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if Canada steal this one on a counter or a long ball header into the box.

  79. Riggity says:

    This IS EMBARASSING

  80. TomG says:

    CHIP that Josh!

  81. Creige says:

    Adu please!

  82. TomG says:

Why is GATT playing on the left when he has no left foot and always plays on the right?

  83. Joe says:

I am gonna call it that Bruin scores.

  84. AngelofLA says:

Different Game totally different. I told you guys, Young blood more and better skill and technical, Plus MLS sorry not are there yet.

    • MLSsnob says:

Agudelo, Felihaber and Johnson at times have all been good.

      • MLSsnob says:

But agreed, bad showing for MLS overall. Bruin, Wondo, Davis, Evans, Zusi and the guy from San Jose all had a poor showing. I wouldn’t mind if a couple of them never put on a US shirt again.

        • soccernut says:

Its unfair to rate bruin as bad. guy came in at the last 15 min where there was no service and 10 guys parked in canada’s defensive third.

  85. Dudester says:

We see Bedoya and Gatt taking people on.Who would’ve thought, maybe you should have started them Klinsy.

  86. ec says:

Boy, rough night for young Juan. Bad touch with every part of his body he tries to use. I wouldn’t shake hands with him post-game, somehow he’s going to have a bad touch.

  87. AngelofLA says:

Thats the way pure pressure in order to win back the ball. Possession is better cause is more ball movement and attack.

  88. jj says:

any poster on SBI would be better than the ESPN announce – pick anyone. sounds like baseball announcers.

  89. ld says:

Josh Gatt is a real whiny crybaby and Agudelo falls over with a stiff breeze

  90. Riggity says:

This is crao, I shouda watched Justified…

  91. Joe says:

“That was like the migration of the lemons…everyone got out of Glasgow.” Where does he come up with this stuff?

  92. Joe says:

I should have played COD BlackOps2.

  93. Joe says:

    Yeah! 4 minutes of garbage!!

  94. Riggity says:

Joe, don’t insult garbage like that…

  95. Dudester says:

I guess our B team depth isn’t as good as we all thought.

  96. Joe says:

Can I get this time I wasted back?

  97. DaveInSLO says:

Are we sure we didn’t just go find a dozen strangers and give them USMNT jerseys? I’m not sure this team would qualify for the Gold Cup let alone the World Cup. Thankfully it won’t come to that.

  98. dan says:

    PATHETIC! ABSOLUTELY PATHETIC!

No one here deserves to be called up again save for our CBs and GK since they did their job

  99. Riggity says:

…I guess that’s one shot on goal for agudelo…

  100. Creige says:

It’s not a USMNT game unless they score in the last minute…or surrender the game winning goal.

  101. Joe says:

    Freekick baby!

  102. Riggity says:

Feilhaber definitely deserves to be called

  103. scott says:

Schedule a friendly with Canada and this is what you get. Did anyone actually expect them to show up and try to play?

  104. jj says:

    well that’s a win for Canada –

thank goodness for cable – can you imagine driving 30 minutes, parking, and paying for that – houston we have a problem

  105. Joe says:

    Goodnight everyone!

  106. Riggity says:

And then he goes and does that…never minddd

  107. Vic says:

Not impressive. However, we dominated possession and often its difficult to play against a team with 11 men back. Also didn’t have our top two finishers Dempsey and Gomez. Donovan could have helped to with his speed and final ball.

  108. Lorenzo says:

Wow. On the bright side this B team will not lead us in the Gold Cup.

  109. Riggity says:

Scott, yes. Aren’t they trying to get n the roster for the hex? The motivation was there, the execution was not

    • scott says:

??? US players fighting for spots yes. But the end of camp friendly that you schedule is with Canada… this is the type of game you will get. Canada always going to bunker, foul, and make any game near unwatchable. Should have scheduled better.

      • Riggity says:

??? How about an example of what team you would have faced instead of just ripping the selection? It’s easy to say Canada’s style sucks. Not to mention almost every team except MEX packs it in during qualifying against us anyways.

  110. scott says:

More pathetic, US team showing or Houston fan showing?

    • shane says:

Sorry dude but two B teams on a Tuesday? It would be totally different if the European league players were there. I dont make the rules of the snobby soccer fans I just observe them.

    • Darwin says:

      Pouring rain, 40 degrees…

  111. Michael Stypulkoski says:

As a shameless Feilhaber fanboy, I think his performance was one of the few positive takeaways from this game. A couple of iffy touches, but he looked like the only one on the field capable of producing anything of quality in the second half. Hope he did enough to impress JK, he’s an great option off the bench at the very least.

  112. juan says:

    Unacceptable result… total fail

  113. AMPhibian says:

benny, zusi, beckerman all seemed pretty effective to me. a sigh to everyone else. we aren’t moving very well at all.

  114. shane says:

Does anyone know if the USA actually has a coach?

  115. 2tone says:

I don’t know what this game say’s, but it was a hot mess of cow dung. Not one player stood out.

But this is what you get for Camp Cupcake.

Why in the world was Diskerud not even in the 18? Instead we got a completely ineffective Brad Evans and Brad Davis.

  116. ld says:

Why is everyone so surprised at this result? Look at the USA lineup, a bunch of crappy MLS players. what did u expect?

  117. Doh doh says:

Practice drill for all Canada games and US home WCQ’s(except v MEX): 11v16 with only 3 players from the sixteen-side allowed to cross midfield…! Bunkering in friendlies SUCKS! I even cringe when we do it against the likes of Mexico/France/Italy…

  118. Darwin says:

Man people, relax. This will take time. Are we at Denmark’s level yet? No. We need a B team, or a C team that compete, and Klinsmann is using the January camp for their education. Unfortunately for us, there is a big drop-off. Unfortunately for us, USSF needs to sell some tickets too.

One good thing I can say about Klinsmann is that he has continued our A-team’s education too, in Ljubljana, Mexico city, and in Genoa.

And what can we say about those games?
