MLS Ticker: Impact add Pisanu, Rapids sign defender Calderon, and more

The Montreal Impact don’t have a head coach yet, but they have added some more firepower to the roster by landing Bologna midfielder Andrea Pisanu on loan for the 2013 season.

Pisanu, who turns 31 on Monday, is a former teammate of Montreal Impact forward Marco DiVaio and he scored six goals in 75 games in Serie A from 2004 to 2012, mostly with Parma. He has also had stints with Cagliari, Verona and most recently Bologna.

“We are very pleased to have been able to come to a loan agreement with Bologna,” said Impact sporting director Nick De Santis. “Andrea can play behind the forward or as a wide player. We are adding another player with good offensive qualities who has a good understanding of the game.”

The Impact are still searching for a head coach, and are currently being led by interim head coach Mauro Biello.

Here are some other moves made by MLS teams in the past day:

Rapids sign Ecuadorian defender Calderon

The Colorado Rapids took a major step toward bolstering their back-line on Thursday with the acquisition of former LDU Quito centerback and Ecuadorian international Diego Calderon.

The 25-year-old centerback is a part of Ecuador’s national team pool and has vast experience, having been a part of the LDU Quito side that won the Copa Libertadores in 2008 and Copa Sudamericana in 2009.

Calderon will be expected to step in and start in a back-line that also brings back Marvell Wynne, who signed a new deal with the club earlier in the off-season. On Thursday, the Rapids also reached a deal to retain defender Chris Klute, who had been with the Rapids on loan from the Atlanta Silverbacks.

Real Salt Lake sign Lovel Palmer

Real Salt Lake has added some depth after reaching an agreement with Re-Entry Draft selection Lovel Palmer.

The Jamaican national team defender can slot in as depth at right back as well as left back, and can also play in a defensive midfield role.

Palmer played in 19 matches for the Portland Timbers last season after being traded to the Timbers by the Houston Dynamo.

Wahl joins Crew

The Columbus Crew have added some depth at left back with the signing of journeyman defender Tyson Wahl.

Wahl spent time with the Montreal Impact and Colorado Rapids last year, but wound up in the MLS Re-Entry Draft, where the Crew selected him.

What do you think of these moves? See Pisanu helping the Impact attack? Think Calderon could make the Rapids defense a stingy unit in 2013?

“Terms of his deal were not announced, per MLS policy. Wahl’s option was declined by Colorado last month and he was not selected in the MLS re-entry draft, allowing him to sign as a free agent.” – link to dispatch.com

That’s what I thought too–the Crew did not select anyone in the re-entry draft.

By the way, at the bottom of one of the articles about Wahl on the Crew website, it is mentioned that Renteria is unlikely to return as he is looking at opportunities in Venezuela.

“He’s Italian? And he plays soccer!? Sign him up!” – Montreal Impact Front Office

no matter how old they are, although pisanu , at 31, is the baby of the bunch

      • The Imperative Voice says:

I’d still set him up a rocking chair next to the rest of the Serie A retirement home bunch, at that age, just to be safe. Heck, no bench, just a deck with rocking chairs. All ref-baiting required to start with “Sonny, let me tell you something…….”

  3. Sly says:

Be nice if you know the redbulls sign a few homegrown contracts… Just saying even though you got the dough why not take advantage of some moves.

    • ... says:

NY signed 3 players to homegrown contracts this offseason, I’m not sure what you’re trying to say…?

    Name sounds romanian

  5. Dudester says:

Six goals in 8 years of serie a is definetly a player with “good offensive qualities”.Plus he only made 75 apps in that time, prob not that good.Saputo picked him up just cause he was Italo

  6. MA1 Rodriguez says:

RSL looks not getting major players.

Impact seems signed non-impact player…more of an average level player for MLS.

Rapids has become more enjoyable to see
