Keane signs contract extension with Galaxy

The LA Galaxy are keen on Robbie Keane.

The Galaxy announced on Wednesday that they re-signed Keane to a multi-year contract extension. The 32-year-old Designated Player enjoyed a strong season in 2012, scoring 16 regular season goals and assisting on nine others while helping the Galaxy repeat as MLS Cup champions.

Keane joined the Galaxy in 2011 and helped them lift the MLS Cup that year, assisting on Landon Donovan’s winner in a 1-0 triumph over the Houston Dynamo in the MLS Cup final. In last season’s final, Keane scored on a penalty kick to cap the scoring in LA’s 3-1 victory over the Dynamo.

Per club and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

What do you think of the Galaxy re-signing Keane to a contract extension? Do you see him continuing to terrorize opposing defenses as well as he did in 2012?

One of the better DP signings so far. He seems to care unlike a few others over the years.

Hey Ives do you have any information on this:

“Also, we’re first in line to participate in the league’s new young, designated player program. So, as players are acquired by the league and made available to the teams, we’re at the top of the list. This is a key program because the players will come in at a discounted cap charge and they also will not count (as one of team’s three) designated players.”

Is MLS about to unveil a new draft solely for young DPs (that won’t be DPs)? Is this tied to the Alex Lopez situation with Olimpia and Houston/TFC?

It’s a good day to be a Galaxy supporter.

I think he’s the best signing of his type, period. He’s been worth two titles to LA. Beckham might have created a bigger marketing and media frenzy but the team was flailing about his first few years. Keane had the assist on the lone 2011 MLS Cup decider and the third goal in 2012, and was a terror both games. 16 regular season goals last year but more importantly another 6 in the 2012 playoffs.

You could make a parallel argument for Thierry Henry, similar productivity and impact, except NYRB has not done as much. Not his fault? But then history likes to remember Michael Jordan and not Karl Malone.

Yeah and Beckham made the long pass before to Keane to set him up for a scoring position thus why he got the secondary assist on that goal….Beckham should have gotten an assist again in the same way last year…..long pass to Keane, and then a nice easy pass to Donovan except this time it was much easier and Landon totally screwed that sitter up -_____- anyways…. Keane is without a doubt one of the best DPs

Fantastic news for the Galaxy. I agree with others who suggest that Keane has been one of the best DP signings in the MLS. His passion and skill are a blessing to the league.

I know they don’t release terms as far as salary and transfer fees…but don’t they usually say how many years extensions are for? That for some reason is something I remember teams announcing in something along the lines of “said MLS team extended player X until 2016″

Anyone knows how long is the extension for? I think he had 1 more year under his initial MLS contract
