Borussia Dortmund didn’t play like an underdog, or like a visitor, in pushing Real Madrid to the brink on Tuesday.
The German champions gave Jouse Mourinho’s side all they could handle, and nearly grabbed all three points, but a Mesut Ozil goal in the 89th minute helped Real Madrid salvage a 2-2 draw at the Bernabeu.
That draw helped keep Manchester City’s fading hopes of a Round of 16 place after rallying from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw against Ajax Amsterdam in Manchester. Goals from Yaya Toure and Sergio Aguero erased an early 2-0 Ajax lead, but some questionable late calls didn’t go City’s way, leaving the English champions upset at the shaky decisions.
Malaga booked their place in the Round of 16 with a well-earned 1-1 draw at the San Siro against AC Milan. Eliseu opened the scoring for the Spanish club in the first half, off a pass from star striker Isco, but Milan pulled level courtesy of a second-half goal from Alexandre Pato.
Milan’s draw allowed Anderlecht to pull within a point of the precious second-place spot in Group C with a 1-0 victory against Zenit St. Petersburg.
FC Porto secured their place in the knockout round courtesy of a hard-earned 0-0 draw against Dynamo Kiev. That draw was enough to keep Porto ahead of Paris St. Germain, which rode a four-assist day from Zlatan Ibrahimovic to earn a 4-0 victory against Dinamo Zagreb.
In Group B action, Schalke held onto the top spot in the group after battling back from a 2-0 deficit to earn a 2-2 draw in Gelsenkirchen. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Jefferson scored the goals to help Schalke erase an Arsenal lead built on goals from Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud. That draw allowed Olympiakos to climb back into the picture after a 3-1 win against Montpellier.
