FDU pulls off another upset, UNC avoids one as both teams reach NCAA Final 16

Fairleigh Dickinson continued their improbable run in the NCAA Tournament going on Sunday, knocking off Atlantic-10 champion and No. 8 seed Saint Louis, 2-1, to secure one of the shock results of the weekend and book their place in the Round of 16.

Senior Jack McVey headed home the game-winning goal three minutes into overtime to give FDU their second upset in four days after starting the tournament with a surprising 1-0 victory against Big East stalwart St. John’s.

FDU will now face defending national champion North Carolina, which needed penalty kicks to avoid an upset loss to Maryland-Baltimore County, which pushed the Tar Heels to spot kicks after the teams finished scoreless after regulation and overtime. Senior goalkeeper Scott Goodwin made three saves in North Carolina’s penalty shootout victory to book the Tar Heels place in the Round of 16.

Four other seeded teams fell on Sunday, including No. 6 UCLA, which was pummeled by San Diego, 5-2. Northwestern knocked off No. 7 seed Marquette, while Coastal Carolina rallied from a 1-0 deficit to eliminate No. 15 seed Wake Forest.

The top performances of the day were turned in by Louisville midfielder Dylan Mares and Indiana midfielder Nikita Kotlov, both scoring hat-tricks in blowout victories.

The Round of 16 matches will take place on Nov. 25th.
