College Tournament Rewind: Maryland & UNC survive, Notre Dame knocks off UConn, and more

The University of Maryland and North Carolina have been two of the top teams in the national all season, and a showdown in the ACC Final always seemed inevitable, but Clemson and Virginia tried their best to spoil the party.

Patrick Mullins made sure the Tigers didn’t grab Maryland’s place in the championship, scoring a late equalizer to force overtime, where a Clemson own goal helped give the SBI No. 2 Terrapins a 2-1 win and a place in the ACC Tournament Final.

North Carolina had an even tougher time reaching the final, needing a penalty kick shootout victory over Clemson. Senior goalkeeper Scott Goodwin made a crucial save in the fifth round of penalty kicks to send the defending champion Tar Heels through to Sunday’s final.

In the Big East, Dillon Powers scored the lone goal in Notre Dame’s 1-0 semifinal victory against UConn, while freshman Brandon Allen continued his dramatic goal-scoring ways by delivering a winner in the 110th minute to give Georgetown a 2-1 victory against Marquette. The Fighting Irish and Hoyas will meet in the Big East Final on Sunday at PPL Park.

They do, just not a conference tournament. Winner of regular season gets auto-bid. UCLA, Cal, Washington, Stanford, Oregon State, and San Diego State (I know).
