Whitecaps roll past hapless Chivas USA, extend lead on FC Dallas for playoff spot

The Vancouver Whitecaps were in desperate need of a victory on Wednesday night after enduring a seven-match winless streak, and after watching a once-mighty hold on a playoff spot dwindle down to two points.

Luckily for them, Major League Soccer's cure for the common slump, Chivas USA, came to town.

Camilo Sanvezzo atoned for his awful miss in last weekend's draw against the Seattle Sounders by scoring a goal and setting up two more as the Whitecaps rolled to a 4-0 mauling of Chivas USA at BC Place.

Gershon Koffie opened the scoring in the 11th minute, and the Whitecaps just kept on rolling as Dane Richards, Camilo and Kenny Miller all deposited shots past beleaguered Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy.

The victory opened up a five-point cushion between Vancouver and FC Dallas for the final playoff spot in the West, though FC Dallas has a game in hand and has two of three remaining matches against Chivas USA. The Goats are winless in their past 11 matches, and have suffered five straight shutout defeats.

Vancouver's victory also eliminated Chivas USA, Portland and the Colorado Rapids from playoff contention.

Here are the match highlights:

What did you think of the match? Impressed with Vancouver, or is Chivas USA the worst MLS team you've seen in some time. See the Whitecaps holding off FC Dallas for the final playoff spot?

  1. K-Town says:

Do Chivas have the most 4 goal losses in MLS history this year? Seems like it.

  2. K-Town says:

Just checked Chivas regular season record. Five 4-0 losses and one 6-2 loss to SEA. 6 4 goal blowout losses this season, WOW. And two of them are now in a row. They have the worst GD in the league and have only scored 21 goals all season. Truly sad.

  3. Gnarls says:

On paper Chivas should be a decent team. Kennedy, Califf, Agudelo, Joseph, LaBrocca, and even the lesser known Bowen and Cardozo, are all solid players. There are systemic issues at that club that need fixing. Frasier needs to go, first and foremost.

  4. biff says:

Why did Juan Agudelo move to Chivas? If his agent encouraged him to make that move Agudelo should fire him and find a new agent.

  5. The Imperative Voice says:

They’ll get soundly thrashed in the playoffs in the road, but a first playoff berth in the 6th season of Canadian MLS soccer would seem a positive milestone.

  6. Shane says:

Miller did not score, Robson did. I fell for you, I often get those mediocre Scots confused myself.

  7. Shane says:

    “feel” for you, I meant

  8. Shane says:

Miller was pulled from the game with a thigh strain at 18min. Fortunate for them since now they have an excuse not to play their DP as they try to protect their playoff spot

  9. Darwin says:

So, the game is on FC Dallas.

  10. NE REVS says:

With all these high scoring games, they’re like the Golden State Warriors of MLS, but if the GSW never scored.

    love is in the air

  12. DCLee says:

Sad situation. Vergera needs to either go all in and give this club a chance or pull out altogether!
