College Soccer Rewind: Saint Louis tops VCU, Air Force upsets UNM again, & more

In Friday’s only matchup between two teams ranked in the SBI Top 25, some late heroics by a pair of Saint Louis players led the team to a dramatic double overtime victory.

With No. 20 VCU leading 2-1 late in the second half, Saint Louis junior midfielder Raymond Lee netted a timely equalizer to send the game into overtime. After nearly 20 minutes of deadlock, the No. 18 Billikens’ Robbie Kristo scored  the golden goal to seal a thrilling 3-2 victory for Saint Louis.

Last week, Saint Louis lost a matchup against Xavier that featured two nationally-ranked teams. But this time around, Kristo made sure that the Billikens would earn all three points against a top opponent.

In other action, No. 7 New Mexico slumped to a second defeat in eight days against an Air Force team that seems to have the Lobos figured out.

Air Force’s Caleb Downey scored a goal in the 75th minute to break the deadlock, and the Falcons held on to win, 2-1. It was the second Friday in a row that Air Force beat New Mexico, and the first time since 2001 that UNM lost to Air Force in two straight meetings.

Kevin Durr opened the scoring for Air Force in the fifth minute, scoring on an impressive long-distance strike. New Mexico answered in the second half, though, with Nik Robson converting a penalty kick in the 51st minute. When Downey restored Air Force’s advantage, UNM were unable to score another equalizer and they suffered their third loss of the season.

Other matches saw No. 1 Maryland continue its strong play by taking down Duke, 2-1, while No. 8 Xavier were held to a 2-2 draw by Dayton.

UW and their dang flip throw ins. Freaking 60 yard hail mary’s. Tony Pulis would be proud.

Ryan Hollingshead with 3 assists against SD State for UCLA.

HaHaHa Michael Harris puts Rory Delap to shame! I’ve got a friend who plays for UW and I’ve been following them for the last two years. I can’t tell you how many times this year Stoke has come to mind! Not the most attractive free-flowing soccer at times, but very solid team defense, good set pieces, and a strong collective team spirit (Nearly nicked Uconn at Uconn as well!). The midfielders for UW are a serious force to be reckoned with in terms of tenacity and never say die attitude with a touch of quality to boot! I guess the most likeable aspect is that these guys all play for each other, no out and out primadonnas, just a bunch of talented, tough, resilient guys all willing to sacrifice and play the part for the team. Kind of what we all used to take a lot of pride in the USMNT being.
