Soccer Saturday: Your Running Commentary

GeoffCameronStoke (ISIphotos.com)

Geoff Cameron's recent run of matches has been an extremely tough one, from matches against Mexico and World Cup qualifiers, to the season-opening Premier League draw against Arsenal. Things won't get any easy for the U.S. national team centerback on Saturday as he and Stoke City take on reigning English champions Manchester City.

Maurice Edu will be hoping to make his Stoke debut as well, while Cameron looks to continue his impressive run for the Potters. Manchester City will be trying to keep pace with unbeaten Chelsea, which faces Queens Park Rangers today in what should be a contentious London Derby. John Terry and Anton Ferdinand will renew acquaintances for the first time since last season's controversial meeting where Ferdinand claimed Terry hurled racist remarks at him.

In Spain, Real Madrid takes on Sevilla in the top match-up in La Liga this season. Cristiano Ronaldo will look to put his recent unhappiness aside and try to keep the defending champions within range of league leaders Barcelona.

In Mexico, U.S. national team forward Herculez Gomez will look to help Santos Laguna knock off Mexican power Club America in Mexico City.

  1. malkin says:

Guzan and Lichaj both getting the start again.

  2. malkin says:

And Cameron on the bench, Edu did not dress

  3. Spencer says:

looks like the coach wasn’t overly excited with their traveling this week.

  4. Heft says:

Why root for Stoke with no Geoff Cameron…

  5. kg says:

Dolo starting, Hannover up on Werder 2-0 within 10 minutes.

  6. Mason says:

Conor Doyle is starting for Derby today. First start in 10 months.

  7. Heft says:

Nice ping pong goal by Stoke against the champs.

  8. fischy says:

The only thing missing was the ping pong paddles in Crouch’s hands. He was guilty of handling the ball with each hand.i

  9. Mig22 says:

Wow, Hazard is fast. He just keep amazing me with his pace while dribbling. Close on the penalty call on SWP.

Contentious game as expected and QPR is playing very well.

  10. wva97 says:

is ream injured? isn’t on the field or bench for bolton.

  11. boosted335 says:

yeah i just turned it off after spending 15min trying to spot him

  12. liz2 says:

Fantastic free kick from Podolski for Arsenal. up 3-0 on Southampton. Arsenal have definitely benefited from Santi Cazorla.

  13. Heft says:

Cazorla has been impressive. I wonder how long he’ll be at Arsenal.

  14. Mig22 says:

Odd Fact – On the field today for Nurnberg
    Timothy Chandler
    Timm Klose
    Timmy Simons

Timo Gebhardt is on the bench.

    What UP with that?

  15. Heft says:

Cheech must’ve lost some confidence last season. He just hasn’t been as good as he should be at this point in time.

  16. Nate Dollars says:

any other neutral viewers think the ref in the qpr-chelsea game is horrible? I can only watch bits and pieces, but it seems like every time I look up, he’s made another bad call/no-call. who is this guy?

  17. Tony in Quakeland says:

First goal given up by Arsenal this season. For all the doom-saying and rending of garments, they are playing better earlier in the season than they did last year.

  18. wva97 says:

i don’t feel he’s been awful. was one of those a penalty for chelsea, maybe, but it would have been really soft, and QPR would have been hard done. unless a game is getting rough or there is malice in tackles, i prefer the no-calls. allows for a faster, more entertaining match for the viewer.

  19. jones says:

    Lol.

sidenote: what’s the deal with all of these Tims being called “Timmy?” I’ve always wondered whether that was actually the players preference (Howard, Ream, Chandler).

To me, “Timmy” is the name you would use for an adolescent boy; all of the grown men I know go by Tim and would probably shudder/squirm if you called them Timmy.

  20. Mig22 says:

Exactly. As in “I’m sick of getting pwned by these Timmies in Call of Duty”

  21. Mig22 says:

    +1

and don’t forget gnashing of teeth.

  22. Mig22 says:

And for the Quad – Timo Gebhardt comes on the field and there are four Timmies for Nurnberg.

AND, it’s a corker of a game, The Timmies are up 3-2 in the 80th

  23. drew11 says:

Most ESPN3 games are now blocked for cable cutters without cable tv. Best to call those watchespn games now.

Big change for me and ESPN3 is now useless.

  24. Frankie B. says:

Seriously. I hope they get slaughtered now. That way they’ll realize that they are better off with Cameron in there.

  25. your overbite says:

Id be called Timothy. sounds authority

  26. your overbite says:

    They on Fire

  27. Josh says:

Relax; it’s a long season, and Cameron put in a lot of travel this week. Player rotation isn’t just for clubs playing in the Champions’ League. The coach may just have Cameron’s best interests in mind.

  28. Michael Stypulkoski says:

That is an absurd stance to take. He played two international games last week, in two different countries, while traveling around 6,000 miles. He was never likely to play today, let alone start.

  29. jones says:

ugh, you are right. I hate the cable monopoly.

I couldn’t watch the Olympics because, although I have Verizon, I don’t have cable. It’s just another way for them to push you towards an expensive subscription. It’s even getting harder to find a provider just for internet that doesn’t bundle with cable.

I feel bad for my dad, who recently bought a higher speed internet plan after discovering how much stuff was available on ESPN online. I really hope ESPN doesn’t get to the point where all events are subscriber only.

  30. Josh says:

Even with that mishap, Arsenal’s defense is vastly improved.

  31. Michael Stypulkoski says:

I read something a while back that said Chandler prefers to be called Timmy. I don’t know about the others, but I would guess Tim is preferred.

  32. jones says:

Lichaj with stupid foul – is carded, penalty in dangerous area

  33. Sad Ronaldo says:

    penalty?

  34. Mig22 says:

My Chelsea boys do NOT look convincing today. This is the kind of game that ManU wins. Teams that win championships end up winning these.

  35. jon says:

    did cameron get subbed in?

  36. jon says:

yes. for charlie adam at about the 85 minute mark

  37. jones says:

free kick, sry. luckily nothing came of it.

    Guzan looks great.

  38. Tony in Quakeland says:

Reports of Arsenal’s demise are – once again – greatly exaggerated.

  39. Charles says:

Oh the author forgot to mention that Seattle plays Portland on NBC. Was had to be deliberate or did he/she really not know that ? Almost had to have been deliberate….wow.

  40. Tony in Quakeland says:

???? It’s on the list. I think it should be called out too, but why on earth would you imagine a deliberate snub.

  41. biff says:

In the Schalke-Greuther-Furth match now playing, I think we are seeing something that could be significant to the USMNT. Jermaine Jones is playing as a bona fide attacking midfielder, like I have never seen him play before for Schalke. He’s looking good, should have had two assists already, nice passes two times to Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who first missed a sitting duck from Jones, the second not quite as easy, but one he would have buried last year.

  42. your overbite says:

How many Yanks in the PL? Surely a dozen

  43. isaf says:

Brad Friedel is a Legend. 15years in England. One of the best GK’s ever in Premier League history.

  44. Don Pelayo says:

How about a feature on Guzan? He seems to have taken over the #1 spot at Villa, and the reports from today indicate that he was outstanding.

  45. isaf says:

    Yabba Dabba Do

  46. Joe+G says:

It can be worse on the women’s side. The US U17 women’s team has -4- girls named “Morgan”.

  47. euroman says:

Parky got a huge goal today but still lost at Copenhagen in a battle at the top of Superliga.

  48. beachbum says:

Guzan is a beast in need of opportunities to show everyone. His quickness/size combo is freaky

  49. whoop-whoop says:

I’m glad they are intelligent enough to not put Cameron’s health in jeopardy. NO WAY he should have played today with the schedule he has had the last 2 weeks- it’s just begging for injury.

  50. Michael Stypulkoski says:

I don’t think it’s quite that many. Off the top of my head there’s Howard, Dempsey, Guzan, Lichaj, Friedel, Cameron, Edu. Who am I missing? Brede Hangeland was born in the US, but I don’t think that’s what you had in mind.

  51. Darwin says:

Cherundolo went 90 today. He always does after an international break.

  52. Nate Dollars says:

got it. must’ve just been looking up on replays where it was close calls. As a former defender, I also prefer no-calls, but it’s a pet peeve of mine that refs don’t call fouls that would otherwise be called, just because they’re in the penalty box (i.e. hazard’s play). One of the reasons the box is there is to mark a place that tells defenders to play smart or else.

  53. Nate Dollars says:

because exaggerated self-importance frequently comes with a persecution complex?

  54. CplDaniel says:

The growing cross-over between net-provided media and cable-provided media is already being reviewed by the FCC. Tell your congressman that you hate your cable company and want more competition. Net-based content distributors should be allowed to compete unimpeded against the cable monopolies.

But patient, alot of these FCC regulations are there for the benefit of the cable companies (like the rule that they can’t sell individual channels, only arbitrary packages of channels). There are 3 channels that I think that I need…and I have to go up AT LEAST 3 subscriptions packages beyond basic to get them.

Cable is obsolete and won’t go down without throwing it’s weight around to stop people from streaming entertainment in place of paying for big cable packages.

  55. Lil' Zeke says:

I for one was on the verge of self-immolation though

  56. Charles says:

Yeah thats it Nate. Not because I care about soccer in the US.
