SBI MLS Player of the Month: Federico Higuain

Few new signings, let alone Designated Players, have come into MLS and had the immediate impact along the lines of what Federico Higuain has had with the Columbus Crew.

Higuain netted three goals and four assists in four matches in his first month in MLS, leading the surging Crew to a 3-0-1 record in that time and making him a natural selection for SBI's MLS Player of the Month for August.

Higuain announced his entry to MLS with an assist that helped the Crew to a draw in Houston, followed that up with a goal and an assist in a Trillium Cup battle against Toronto FC and then displayed his free-kick prowess with two masterful strikes in a come-from-behind win over the New England Revolution, whom he will face again Wednesday night. He capped off his month by setting up two more goals in Philadelphia, and his presence, along with that of newcomer Jairo Arrieta, has completely transformed the Crew attack.

Higuain beat out the likes of Seattle's Fredy Montero, who scored in all four of the Sounders' games (twice as a substitute), including a hat trick against Chivas USA, to account for a league-high six goals in August; Montreal's Patrice Bernier, who had three goals and three assists in four Impact victories; and Chicago's Chris Rolfe, who scored three goals to help the Fire gain a more secure foothold in the Eastern Conference playoff hunt.

What did you think of Higuain's month? Was he the top MLS performer in August? Would you consider him for any individual postseason awards even though he joined the season so late?

Higuaian, along with Arrieta, have transformed the Crew from a team that would make you fall asleep to a genuinely exciting team. While I don’t think Higuaian can keep up that level of production, his mere presence should open up other opportunities for his teammates.

So much love for the Crew on SBI recently…

One could say it’s MASSIVE LOVE for a MASSIVE CLUB.

  3. Frank says:

Yet, I can’t find an article or video of the incident that lead to Julius James’ suspension.

Crew games have become exciting again! Good work on getting a great group of guys together, Crew!!

  5. Modibo says:

Gotta agree with this pick. Tremendous work by Higuain in Columbus.

  6. Gordo Stretch says:

He will come back down to earth sometime, but I’m loving it while it lasts.

  7. Steve C says:

The Crew just had fun making Hoppenot into the red headed stepchild of MLS. He got what was coming to him with his lil antics. :)

  8. atd says:

Can’t argue with this; he’s turned the whole team around. But I also like the MLS website’s pick of Bernier, who’s been equally amazing in a less spectacular role.

  9. Turgid Jacobian says:

Damn he is the *oldest* looking 27 year old I’ve ever seen.

Its not that I completely disagree with this pick, but that lazy bum Freddy Montero had a PP90 of 5.91
    vs. Higuains 3.18

I wonder how high it would have been if he was trying.
