Dempsey left out of Fulham squad for Saturday’s clash with Manchester United

The Clint Dempsey saga at Fulham continues.

The U.S. national team star will not play for the Cottagers in their upcoming showdown with Manchester United, having been left out of the squad for Saturday's showdown.

The transfer rumor mill has gone very quiet on Dempsey, with a long-rumored move to Liverpool looking less and less like a possibility by the day. In fact, Fulham has lodged a formal complaint against Liverpool for unsettling their leading scorer by publicly acknowledging interest in Dempsey without ever making a formal bid.

Fulham manager Martin Jol has spoken about wanting Dempsey to stay at Fulham, and has extended an olive branch in that regard, but with Dempsey clearly wanting to leave the club it looks as though the situation remains unresolved as we stand just a week before the close of the summer transfer window.

What do you think of this development? Starting to think Dempsey will stay at Fulham? Still holding out hope that a big club makes a bid for him? Where would you like to see him wind up?

  1. Shane says:

    Irreparable damage methinks

  2. Tyler says:

There was no extension of olive branches, merely a removal of foot from mouth. This isn’t new from Fulham and certainly isn’t the first time they’ve tried dirty, underhanded tactics in an attempt to send a message or force a player to do something.

  3. elgringorico says:

Dude, it’s as much on Deuce as it is Fulham. He needs to man up and accept that he’s playing for Fulham again this year.

  4. Eddie says:

I’m looking forward to this being over so we can finally hear from Clint. I really don’t believe Fulham.

  5. Ben says:

Clint’s agent better have something lined up or else he should be fired.

  6. Shane says:

oops maybe not irreparable. Fulham have lodged a complaint against Liverpool, probably Fenway sports Group, which they deserve.

  7. Tyler says:

Have you heard Deuce say ANYTHING about refusing to play? The only evidence you have of that is that the coach said he refused to play and would never play for Fulham again… only to come out a few days later and say he lied and that Deuce didn’t actually refuse to play and that he wanted him to stay.

    Uh, and that’s on Deuce?

  8. Adam says:

Even so I wouldn’t say it’s irreparable. His actions, should he end up staying, will play into that. If he can approach or exceed his goal tally last year, especially against big clubs, then it’ll just help Fulham increase their odds of finishing higher and I suspect it would restore endearment to the Fulham Faithful.

  9. vik says:

Yea. I have a hard time believing he would not play if another transfer wasn’t in the works.

  10. elgringorico says:

He could have not held out from the beginning. “I am actively seeking a transfer but in the mean time I am fully committed to my contract and this club.

  11. Illmatic74 says:

I really can’t wait until the transfer window closes. I really tired of this story and the Modric story. In the words of the late Aaliyah this needs a resolution.

  12. dgoshilla says:

Pretty classless but I’m not surprised as he’s always seemed like a bit of a jerk. He thinks he’s better than he is. That much is obvious.

  13. biff says:

Tyler is absolutely right. What exactly has Clint done wrong, elgringorico? Doesn’t he have right to decline to sign a contract extension without being bullied by Jol and Fulham management? And now Fulham filing a ridiculous formal complaint–Martin Jol and Fulham management are now acting like spiteful clowns and turning Fulham, which previously had decent support in the US before they started trying to destroy the reputation of America’s best player who also happens to be a USMNT fan favorite. Now Fulham is flirting with becoming the most hated team in the US, not to mention sending a warning flag to other players considering making a move to Fulham. It will now be a long, long time before another American player signs a contract with Fulham.

Count me as one USMNT fan who supports Clint Dempsey 100% and I know I am not alone.

  14. Ben says:

Clint is getting crushed in the p.r. battle right now. I do wonder why he doesn’t say anything.

  15. Tyler says:

Like I predicted awhile back, Liverpool screwed them both.

Liverpool approached Dempsey and said they were very interested. Dempsey and his agent went to Fulham and said this is something we’d like to do and they’ve approached us with serious verbal interest. Fulham held Dempsey out of preseason events as is normal when a player is about to be traded.

Fulham and Liverpool sat down at the negotiating table and extended their hands for the deal only to have Liverpool pull their hand back, yell psyche and run out of the room saying we were kidding!

Of course Fulham is left looking completely foolish. Dempsey was going to bring some major cash for the transfer market, yet now they’ve got nothing to show for the offseason transfers and that’s simply embarrassing for the club. So what does Jol do? He flips the script and somebody has to be left holding the blame. So Jol fires angrily into the press at Dempsey and Liverpool trying to send a message to other players, most notable the Belgium bum, painting Dempsey as a holdout and what will happen if you try to strong arm the club (of course in this case it isn’t true since Dempsey didn’t strong arm anyone, Liverpool screwed the pooch).

Except club ownership steps in and says, uh don’t alienate our best player and shut up because we might be stuck with him for the season and we’ll need him. So Jol has to walk back the crap he spewed and then Fulham tries to save face by filing a complaint against Liverpool for their actions in the entire mess.

  16. soccerjohn says:

Excellent point. This is ridiculous in so many ways.

  17. Illmatic74 says:

I mentioned this a few times before but, Dembele has not signed a new contract either. Why hasn’t Dembele received the same treatment from Fulham?

  18. hammeggs says:

Could not agree more. We are talking about Martin jol right.

  19. Adam says:

Gonna argue this. I think he *plays* like he’s ready for a fight but leaves it out on the field.

Met him once after a USMNT game (he didn’t play that night) and he was super friendly, chill, and just seemed happy to be there. Heard similar accounts from others.

  20. Alex says:

    Absurd.

  21. farcyde21 says:

Fenway Sports Group – simultaneously trying to ruin 3 franchises… Dempsey belongs on a world class team (preferably in the EPL for USMNT’s sake), Fulham need to have this matter resolved so they can move on and the freaking Red Sox need new ownership.

  22. Brian S. says:

The complaint is actually against Rodgers himself and is not directed at the owners according to another report.

  23. Nordy says:

The same can be said for Brede Hangelend. Also hasn’t signed a new contract. Also has been the subject of transfer speculation from “bigger” clubs.

    Hangeland is playing as CAPTAIN.

All evidence points to Dempsey being the problem, not Jol or anyone else at the club.

  24. biff says:

How should I know. I can only speculate, and it could be that Fulham after months and months of trying to bully Clint into signing the contract extension have given up, have finally realized the Clint will not back down from his right to decline to sign and to move to a new club. So they put on their brass knuckles, bloodied up Dempsey as a warning to Moussa Dembele, along the lines of: This will be you if you don’t sign. Will it work? We will see whether or not Dembele will cave to the pressure. Hard to believe thought that he would sign for a team with such spiteful management.

As for Clint, if they don’t let him go by August 31 and in so doing miss out on a sweet 5-8 million transfer fee, then Clint no doubt will honor his contract and play until January, when he can sign a pre-contract as a free agent and Fulham will not get one penny out of him. Keep in mind, when geoff Cameron was in talks with Stoke, Houston sat him on the bench to avoid injury before the deal could be sealed. That appears to be what Fulham is doing, to avoid missing out on the transfer fee, but making it appear as if Dempsey is on strike. Two sides to every story, jack. The truth will come out–I bet is going to be a very interesting story.

  25. Nordy says:

    You have quite the imagination!

  26. Redline says:

Way to make your stock rise, Clint!!
By the time is all said and done Dempsey will end up in a crappier team this year or next and score 8-9 goals a season.
Fulham was a good place for someone at his level. He will not find anything better but could end up worst off.

  27. PanchoMiguelMoralesdeConejo says:

Play out for a Free Transfer, Deuce…

  28. Rlw2020 says:

Cuz dEmbele hasnt refused to train with fulham. End of the day your under contract you have to show up

  29. biff says:

Is it possible that we have some Fulham trolls on this board bashing Clint Dempsey and praising Fulham management? Just asking.

  30. Rlw2020 says:

Id say so!! It seems like duece is on his own out there..terrible

  31. gtv says:

I’m sad for Deuce. Hopefully things will work out though.

  32. Michael Stypulkoski says:

That’s absurd. As a Fulham and US fan, this is all on Dempsey. Players who want transfers almost always have the professionalism to continue to play for their clubs; look at Modric last year, Ronaldo before he moved to Madrid, etc. When they don’t, they look like Carlos Tevez. Some of you are so blinded by your loyalty to Dempsey that you don’t see what he’s doing. What exactly has Fulham done wrong in this situation? Expected a player under contract to honor said contract? Not actively shopped their best player to other teams? What a shameful way for a club to behave!

And lest anyone forget, no offers have been made! What exactly is Fulham supposed to do?

  33. Nate Dollars says:

ha! i was thinking jol, too.

  34. Michael Stypulkoski says:

I’ve never gotten the impression that Dempsey cares about his reputation at all. He isn’t a big endorsement guy or face of US soccer like Donovan. I respect that about him, even though I think he’s handling this horribly (not from a PR standpoint, but just from a professional one).

  35. Tyler says:

    I try :D

  36. US Fan says:

It’s a little two faced for Jol to repremand Liverpool for not making an offer when all summer his stance has been that FFC were not going to sell Dempsey for any amount and to not even bother making an offer. I still hope he can get to a bigger club this year, but for now a deal for this year (perhaps to Sunderland) might be his best bet. Sign wherever you want next year when you are a free agent.

  37. Illmatic74 says:

Exactly the point I was trying to make. If Fulham are willing to bench arguably their best player in Dempsey it means he is in the wrong somehow. Since other key players like Dembele and Hangeland have still played even with contract issues unresolved.

  38. Michael Stypulkoski says:

Yes, anyone with a different opinion is a troll.

  39. Illmatic74 says:

Good point overall but, Modric is not a good name to bring up since he has already been fined this summer for refusing to train.

  40. Michael Stypulkoski says:

That’s pretty naive. Managers say that about their star players all the time, but there isn’t a single player in the world who isn’t for sale for the right price. Sports is a business, first and foremost.

  41. 20 says:

I think there are two sides and however this ends, I think we will find out that both Clint and the club are at fault for the situation. It’s a disagreement between a manager and a player and a more complex situation than simply: 1. Clint is acting like a spoiled brat, holding out and refusing to play. or 2. Fulham’s management are a bunch of spiteful pricks that are trying to intimidate their players. NEITHER of those is what has really happened yet it seems most posters have fallen into one of those two camps. It is simply that the relationship between management and Clint has turned sour, maybe some regrettable things were said or done. My point is that people are jumping to wild conclusions which are probably very far from the truth.

  42. Oranje Mike says:

    Stop being a turd, Clint.

  43. David says:

This is starting to remind me of a couple years ago when Schwarzer wanted to go to Arsenal and Fulham didn’t let him go. This one is a bit more contentious. Fulham have spent all summer saying they are not going to sell and responding to every rumor by saying they would accept no bids but at the same time not playing Dempsey. He did show up for their trip to Germany. I think Fulham want to sell but there are no bids due to their public statement stating otherwise and they are pushing the blame on Dempsey.

  44. biff says:

I have no doubt Clint is going to end up at a good club, if not in the Premier League then in Germany or Spain or Roma with MB. I actually would not surprised to see Man City, who still wants a couple players, sneak in and swoop him up. Not saying it is going to happen, but Clint with his versatility would be a great utility player for Man City, although might not be best move for the USMNT.

  45. Eddie says:

So glad you were able to be part of the negotiations. Please, tell us more what you KNOW has happened.

  46. DJ777 says:

Liverpool is waiting until the last minute to low-ball an offer to fulham. This way they dont have to pay a high transfer fee. If liverpool really wants dempsey then they are in the drivers seat. Fulham has no leverage whatsoever so why does liverpool need to rush & pay more for clint than they have to?

  47. M says:

He was wanting out sine last year. Why risk injury. IF that were to happen then both parties would lose out. Fulhan needs to wake up and get in touch with the real world.

Players and teams, especially in the USA, realize that the importance to the club and the player of leaving in the last year of a contract.

Clint has held the higher ground through out this process and will be the better for it.

  48. Primoone says:

What a f*ckin disaster for Fulham…is his agent affiliated with Traffic or something?

  49. Thebumswillalwayslose says:

Is it August 31 yet? Just get this freaking thing over with already.

With Clint’s camp staying silent, no one outside of Clint, Jol and the Fulham execs really know how this has played out. Jol’s backtracked on his “Clint refused to play” comments, and now Fulham has lodged a formal complaint against Liverpool, so the whole thing is just a gigantic mess.

The one undeniable fact in this situation is that Clint has taken an absolute PR beating, so whatever the outcome turns out to be, I hope it’s worth it for him.

  50. [e]clectic says:

but if Dempsey IS pulling a Modric, why haven’t Fulham fined him or done anything other than not play him? If it were all on Clint wouldn’t it make sense that they would have done something to that effect?

  51. M says:

So no offers have been made for Clint and you know this how? and this is ALL Clint’s fault, really? and you know this because your directly involved in this matter? probably not.

Clint has one career as a soccer player and he really needs to do what’s best for Clint and his family. Fulham as a business has an endless business life in theory

  52. FulhamDC says:

This whole mess is completely absurd now. I just don’t believe that Clint has said any of the things attributed to him, and that Fulham’s management has messed things up here. No one remembers articles that appeared in the English press a week before the season started where it was claimed that Jol planned to “freeze out” Dempsey by not starting him in the opener. Here’s a link to one of those articles:

    link to mirror.co.uk

Then, the day before the season starts, all of a sudden its “Dempsey refuses to play” and “Dempsey’s on strike”. Bull.

Chairman al-Fayed will always be a Fulham legend, he bought the club, invested more than a hundred million pounds of his own money, and took them up 2 leagues to the Premiership in just 5 years. But as he has aged, he’s become a little more difficult to deal with. Look back to last year, when he dedicated the statue of Michael Jackson on the oldest Football ground in London. There, he said, “If some stupid fans don’t understand and appreciate such a gift this guy gave to the world they can go to hell. I don’t want them to be fans.” Nice.

A couple of months later we saw the negotiations with Mark Hughes. When Hodgson left, 2 summers ago, al-Fayed wanted Martin Jol, but wouldn’t pay the 5 million euro buyout cost on his contract, so he “settled” for Mark Hughes – gave him a year with an option for a second. After leading Fulham to its second highest points totals ever, and a Europa League spot, al-Fayed offered Hughes LESS money for the second year. Mostly because Jol was now available. Hughes walks and al-Fayed gets his man.

Move forward to this summer and Dempsey. The club makes an effort to sign Dempsey to a new contract, but it is said that they will not go beyond their sacred “wage cap”, rumored to be 50,000 pounds a week. While that’s a tremendous amount of money, it’s still 20,000 ppw less than Joey Barton makes! If the club isn’t willing to exceed its wage cap for their all-time premier league goals leader, where is there any room to negotiate?

Now the only option on the table is to sell him, but it’s doubtful Fulham will get what they feel he is worth. It also ties Jol’s hands because without selling Dempsey, he’s got very little funds for the transfer market. At this point, weeks ago, they were finished with Dempsey. So much so, that the package I received 10 days ago with my membership materials (the membership card is also my “ticket” to get in to the stadium for matches) features photos of most of the team and the cottage. It’s not the most dazzling package you’ll ever see, but I’m sure it took a few weeks to put together, but yet doesn’t feature a single photo of their two-time player of the year.

I love Fulham, but this has blown up in their face, and now all that’s left is for them is to file a weak complaint against Liverpool. Beyond Dempsey, both Moussa Demebele and Brede Hangeland have only a year left on their contracts as well, and neither has signed a new deal. Nobody can say for sure what really went on behind the scenes, but the fact is Fulham is an increasingly difficult club to do business with, and as a fan I’m very afraid this summer has cemented that reputation.

  53. M says:

What would really be justice is if Clint played or sat out the season and Fulham got a big FAT nothing at the end of the season when he left for FREE. That it’s in both parties interest to move him seems lost on many

  54. M says:

LOL the redsox invested 100 million fee + contract in Dice K, 50 + in Jon lackey and another 57+ million in Carl Crawford and they can’t get a few dollars for Clint.

They should liquidate LPFC and rebuild the Bosox

  55. chris says:

Wow i cant believe the fans on here bashing clint dempsey. Hes been extremely professional in this matter and a couple of false statements is all it takes for you to turn your back on our best player? I expected a lot more from our fans but then again these probably are the same people that said donovan, dempsey, bradley, jozy, and shea werent good or never would be good. Clint Dempsey made it clear he wanted to move last year but stayed due to the clubs wishes and had his best season yet. He refused to cave in and sign an extension and Fulham held him out of training looking to cash in on him and keep him injury free. Liverpool showed strong interest but wasnt willing to pay his price tag and now Fulham is blaming Clint for not extending his contract.

  56. Tyler says:

    This. Facts. Love it.

The club has a history of just screwing people when it doesn’t suit their business interests regardless of outcome.

  57. Tyler says:

For once I agree completely with you.

  58. Roy says:

I have to agree. If Dempsey is willing to train and play, he needs to shout it. Otherwise, it looks to be all on him. Where is his agent, who seems to be useless, when Dempsey needs him for advice?

  59. Old School says:

Report: “Fulham has complained about Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers to the Premier League over the club’s pursuit of striker Clint Dempsey.”

Cry me a river. Poor business Fulham. Should have sold him when you had the chance at likely twice the rate.

…a bid WAS made. Unless Jol was lying about that, too. Can’t keep track of what he’s being deceitful nowdays.

  60. AdamFromMich says:

I also think Clint has handled this badly from a professional standpoint. He should have immediately backpedaled when his desire to play for a Champion’s League club became news. He ended up limiting the number of teams that would bid for him. So any Champion’s League clubs that wanted to bid for Clint knew they could low-ball Fulham.

In addition, his lack of comments regarding Fulham (especially politically-correct ones) make it seem like staying with them is not an option. This also keeps offers low. Even if Fulham wanted to sell Clint at the start of the transfer window, having fewer offers come in (for lower amounts) couldn’t make them happy.

I’m not blaming Clint for this mess — Fulham (and Jol) deserve plenty of blame — I’m just saying he could have done a few simple things to improve his situation. Having said all this, I obviously don’t have near the information that Clint and his agent do, so hopefully they have a plan. I think when the truth comes out this will make an interesting story; Hopefully someday Clint can look back on it without getting pissed off.

  61. THomas says:

    Fulham + Dempsey > Liverpool

    Figure it out Dempsey.

  62. Ryan says:

Dembele hasnt expressed his intent to go anywhere else and has not asked to leave so you can’t compare he and Dempsey. Also this started a long time ago when Fulham told Dempsey to train on his own and that he would not be apart of their preseason. My guess is that they did this because they figured he would be sold before the season started.

  63. navin j says:

Because his agent isn’t currently being accused of speaking with another club without Fulham’s permission

  64. navin j says:

All evidence points to a situation that is far more complex than just Clint Dempsey not wanting to sign a new contract

  65. navin j says:

There is an investigation of improper dealings between ‘Pool and Clint Dempsey’s agent. Anything he says will be used as evidence in the investigation

  66. navin j says:

Agree 100% – I wouldn’t put it past MAF that the tapping up complaint is just a tactic in making Liverpool meet their asking price. Sort of, bait and switch. They have ‘Pool’s balls in a vice with the FA – make a good deal, it all goes away.

  67. biff says:

Wow. That is a masterpiece of a post, FulhamDC. Not only written like a pro, but very informative and from the heart. Thanks a lot.

I have the feeling that something really rotten is happening within the club, and Clint has been the lightening rod for all of it. Good thing he is tough guy. What surprises me is that no other players are speaking up on his behalf. They must be afraid, and I would not be surprised if some of them also would like to jump ship. But by remaining silent they are only increasing chances that management will bully them also in the future.

  68. biff says:

Well put, Chris. I also am flabbergasted by the Clint bashing, although some of the poster names doing the bashing appear to be new names, leading me to believe they are trolls swooping in and then swooping out.

  69. bottlcaps says:

Fulham KNOW Dempsey will not return to play for the team. If Fulham want to realize any money from a transfer fee, thay must sell him NOW. during the winter transfer period his transfer fee will be a third or less of what it is now. Fulham got greedy and set the fee to high initially, by setting it lower he would have attracted more suitors and begun a bidding war. As it is now, most clubs who will want him will wait until the last few hours to make a legitimate bid, as only them will Fulham have to come down in price or lose all value of the transfer fee completely.

This is standard stuff when a valuable player wants to make a move to another team. The only “fly-in-the-ointment” is Dempsey’s insistence that he wants to play, not just for a bigger club, but for a Champion’s League team, of which there are fewer suitors.

I fully expect Dempsey to sign for Arsenal or Liverpool and if those fall through, I expect AS ROMA to come in at around 5-6 Million pounds.

But I also expect things to heat up the last wee,

Already we have seen linkages to the “bottom feeders” West Ham or Sunderland who only stand to gain a player like Dempsey IF Fulham wants to unload, quickly, an unhappy player. Unfortunately for those teams, they do not mee Dempsey’s criteria. and he is NOT that desperate.

  70. loosek says:

So after Liverpool lowballs him, and he sits on the bench while Joe Cole or Jonjo Shelvey gets to play, Clint will be happier than he is now?

  71. chris says:

Haha It was bound to happen some day

  72. MSNats says:

Interesting studio chat on espnfc where they talk about the situation. Stevie Nichol (the same guy who coached Clint at NE Revolution before he moved to Fulham) flatly doesn’t believe that he’s refusing to play. Seems to have 100% faith in Dempsey.

  73. MemRook says:

GREAT point. Except it seems no one is buying. Kind of a key factor in this equation

  74. Bobeto says:

The price tag Fulham put on his head for the transfer fee has limited the teams that would have an interest. Hoping another good performance by Fulham (although unlikely) against Man U. could lower the asking fee if they see they can do without Dempsey….If they get blown away, I am betting Clint is spending at least 1/2 a season with Fulham…..He is now looking desperate and is at the mercy of Fulham. I would like to see the “next level” EPL teams take a look at him….Fulham needs to help with that transfer fee…

  75. Adam says:

I said it the other day and will say it again, Clint needs to fire his agent. He stated that he wanted to play CL football a long time ago. The agent should have been able to find a team that met that requirement after the season Dempsey had last year. Now the season has started and both Fulham and Clint look bad.

  76. Brett says:

It’s not that simple. You can’t force a club to purchase a player just because you’re in charge of negotiating his contracts. Dempsey is under contract, therefore Fulham first have to agree to sell him before his agent can do anything. All the agent can do is call around to guage interest. The interested clubs already bid for Dempsey, and Fulham refused to sell.

Why would Jol say Dempsey didn’t refuse to play? Why would Dempsey still be held out of the lineup if he hadn’t refused to play? Answer these questions, and you’ll begin to see the truth of this whole debacle.

  77. pancholama says:

Most accurate rendition of the Fullham – Jol – Dempsey – ‘pool saga I have read yet.

  78. pancholama says:

You are seeing things very clearly.

  79. Annelid Gustator says:

    Tell it to SoccerWave(TM)!

  80. Illmatic74 says:

    Dempsey has already been fined.

  81. Illmatic74 says:

Dembele’s agent came out saying that Real Madrid were interested in signing Dembele.

  82. Michael Stypulkoski says:

How do I know there have been no offers? Have you been paying attention at all? It’s no secret that no teams have made an offer. That’s exactly why there’s such a controversy – because Liverpool made it known they wanted him, even claimed he was already signed on their website, but never got around to actually making an offer. But, hey, don’t take my word for it, here’s a Fox Sports story from today about it: link to msn.foxsports.com

  83. Michael Stypulkoski says:

True about Modric, but he made it clear last summer that he wanted to move to Madrid, but still had the decency to play last season when a deal wasn’t worked out. Tottenham is holding up the inevitable transfer trying to get more money, so they get blame there. Fulham, on the other hand, aren’t holding up any move because Liverpool never made an offer.

  84. FulhamDC says:

Thanks everyone. It’s a bad situation for the club and much as I was encouraged by last week’s performance, I think we come down to earth this Saturday.

  85. Michael Stypulkoski says:

The Mirror is a tabloid, and that article offers no quotes or sources. It isn’t even worth considering. The Michael Jackson statue and the Mark Hughes stuff is simply irrelevant. You bring up Dembele and Hangeland, both of whom are still playing for Fulham. What exactly has Fulham done that suggests they are difficult to do business with?

  86. pd says:

at what point does this translate to Dempsey’s fitness and game shape? that ultimately translates to a drop in his stock and makes teh prosepct of Fulham getting their due even more unlikely.

Could an MLS team arrange some kind of loan while this BS is sorted out I wonder?

Oh, and greed sucks. Truly brings out the worst in humanity in every aspect, even though this is a fairly begnign example of it, just a reminder of how it sucks..

  87. GW says:

The fact is none of you guys know what has been said behind the scenes and what actually happened.

And without real live facts everything you all just said could be BS.

All this sound and fury is a little misplaced and until the entire story comes out, it is probably best not to pass judgement on Clint, Jol and the Fulham managment.

Everyone involved is a professional with their own agendas and this has been playing out for over a year.

I’m not inclined to believe anything about either side until its over, except for this.

Whenever they say it’s not about the money, it is always about the money.

Disgusting! Fair weather fans! I’ve followed Clint since his rookie season in MLS, this isn’t the first time Fulham has done this to him. August ’09 Clint was pressured to sign another contract after being froze out of the team (the same season he lead Fulham to a Europa League Final against Athletico Madrid). Back then it wasn’t as obvious to the world that Clint was a serious offensive threat no matter the opponent…last season finally established that without a doubt. Imagine you are a sports team with a player who doesn’t want to play for you, and he happens to be worth a ton of money. Would you (A) play him and risk injury, then you have to foot the bill for his recovery right before he signs with another club while you get no monetary compensation, or (B) finally accept that you have to move on and cash out? Easy to see that (B) is the best option. It’s just unfortunate that Mohamed Al-Fayed and Jol are so vindictive.
I suggest people read up on Mohamed Al-Fayed, learn about how he lead a brutal lie filled take over of Harrods, or how he eventually stole from the previous top guy at Harrods (Roland Rowland) safe deposit box got caught and was forced to pay Rowland’s widow compensation, how about the time he paid off members of parliament to lobby for his business (the MP’s he bribed were subsequently fired, disgraced, and Parliament passed a new law to stop something of this magnitude to never happen again…dubbing it the “cash for questions affair” and after it the questions failed he turned everyone in…just ratted them out so he wouldn’t have to pay them). He is a ruthless businessman who when he doesn’t get his way he sets out to destroy everyone who stopped him.
It’s a shame so many people blindly follow this guy in his attempt to bully Clint. Hats off to Clint for staying out of the whole thing and just waiting for his next chance to prove to the world that he can put the ball in the back of any net no matter what other 21 players are on the field.
